To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatwe, EUGENE E. STUVER and CALEB R. ROBBINS, citizens of the United States, residing at Blue Mound, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which thefollowing is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in looks for sliding doors, and the object of the invention is to simplify and improve the existing art by providing a lock of this class which will automatically look a door when slid to its closed position, but also whereby the sliding bolt may be thrown into inactive position so that the door may be moved to its closed position without being locked in such closed position.

With the above and other objects in View, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the casing.

In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the sliding door and 2 the trim of the casing against which the door abuts when in its closed position.

In the present instance we have illustrated the door provided with a hook bolt and the trim provided with. a casing, but it is to be understood that the casing may be applied to the door and the bolt connected with the trim if desired. The hook bolt is indicated by the numeral 3 and has one of its ends pivoted, as at 4:, to the door 1. The door is provided with a vertically arranged and with a horizontally arranged stop, the said stops being indicated by the numerals 5 and 6 respectively, .and each of said stops may be in the nature of clips each being adapted to engage with the hook bolt when the same is swung to its vertical or inoperative position or to its horizontal or operative position. The end of the bolt 3 oppo- Site its pivot 4 is formed upon its lower edge with a depending lug providing the hook proper, the same being indicated by the numeral 7, and the said outer edge of the bolt, preferably, is beveled from its center to its opposite longitudinal edges. The bolt at a suitable distance from its hook and upon its upper edge is provided with a notch 8.

The casing which is secured to the trim 2 is indicated by the numeral 9, and preferably comprises a substantially U-shaped member including a flat outer face 10, inturned right angular sides 11 which have their ends provided with flat outturned flanges 12, and these flanges 12 are provided with suitable openings for the reception of screws or similar securing devices 13. The sides 11 of the casing 9, at the juncture of the flanges 1.2 therewith, are formed with elongated substantially rectangular openings 14, the said openings alining and the hook bolt 3, when swung to its horizontal position, is adapted to pass through the opening 14 nearest the said bolt. When the door is slid to its closed position, its beveled edge contacting with the lower wall of the opening, elevates the hooked end of the same, permitting the'said end of the bolt to pass through the said second opening 14c and the hook thereof to fall by gravity against the outer side 11 of the casing to lock the door in its closed position.

The pivot 4 is arranged upon the door a suitable distance away frOm the casing 9, and by swinging the hook bolt 3 upon its pivot to bring the hooked end thereof out of contact with the side of the casing, the door may be readily swung to an open position, as will be readily understood. Th horizontal clip 6 while provided with a finger 1-5 to contact with the outer side of the bolt tosustain the same in proper position to permit of the bolt passing through the openings 14 of the casing, does not engage with the said hook with suflicient friction to prevent the same dropping by gravity as above set forth, but the finger 16 upon the vertical clip 5 is in the nature of a spring and is adapted to frictionally engage with the hook bolt to normally hold the same in its inoperative position.

The sides 11 of the casing are connected, at suitable points, by strips or partitions 17-18, the lower partition being provided with a square opening 18 and the upperpartition 17 being provided with a round opening 19 which is arrangedin a line to the the downward movement of the bolt, and the said bolt is provided upon one of its sides with'a lateral finger 24 which is arranged within the path of an oilset turning arm 25 that is arranged upon the spindle 26 of the operating knob 27, the said spindle passing through suitable openings in the base 10 of the casing 9 as well as through suitable openings in the trim and the casing of the trim and both of the ends of the spindle may Surrounding the rounded portion of the bolt 20 beyond its finger 27 and exerting a tension between the said finger and the said upper partition 17 is a helical spring 28 which serves to normally forcethe bolt-downward of the casing to bring the lower end of the same to engage in the notch 8 of the hook member or bolt 3 to lock the door in its closed position. The oppositely beveled or spear shaped end of the pivoted hook bolt 23 permits of the same contact with the lower end of th locking bolt without interfering with the said bolt passng through the elongated opening 15 in the sides of the casing 9, and, of course,

- upon operating the knobs to return the spindle, the arm 25 will contact with the finger of the locking bolt, elevating the bolt to bring the same out of engagement with the notch 80f the hook bolt, and when the 1 said hook bolt is swung to bring its hook 7 within the area of the openings 14, the door may he slid to its open position as previously described.

Having thus described the invention, what we claim is: i

1. In combination with a sliding door and a jamb against which the door' abuts, of a hook bolt 'pivoted'at one of its ends to the door, vertical horizontal clips for sustaining the hook bolt either vertically or horizontally of the door, a :casing having an 7 opening to receive the hooked end of the bolt to permit of the said bolt dropping. by

gravity to engage with one of the sides of the casing, said hook bolt having a notch, a spring pressedmember in the casing adapted to engage in the notch, and means I for operatingthe member to bring out of said notch.

2. In combination, a stationary". member and a slidable member adapted to abut with the stationary member, of a bar having one the same of its ends pivotally secured to one of the members, the other end of the' bar being substantially V-shaped and provided upon its lower edge with a [shoulder forminga hook, means upon the door for sustaining the hook member ina vertical or in a horizontal position, a casing upon the second vlei member having openings throughwhich the hooked end of the-bar is adapted to pass, said hook adaptedto swing by gravity to engage with the casing to one side of one of the said openings, said bar adjacent its hooked end having one of its edges provided with a notch, a spring pressed locking mem-- ber within the casing and adapted to engage withthe notch of the bar, a finger upon the bolt a knob tumbler, an arm upon the knob i 9O tumbler adapted to co-act with the'finger to elevate the lock bolt' when the knob tumbler is turned in one direction.
