- INDEX.
Applicatiqngle d @prdl 3, 1912. Serial No. 688,293.
I following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to an index, and more particularly to an index to be used in connection with a cabinet within which is contained an account system.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient means for holding the name bearing cards or slips, and a still further object is to provide a card holding means of such character that the said cards or slips can be quickly and easily inserted or removed, and when inserted will be maintained in their proper positions and held against dislocation.
Another object is to provide a transparent covering for said index thereby maintaining the same clean at all times.
With these objects in View, and also with certain other objects as will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification: Figure l is. a perspective view of a cabinet provided with my improved index. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view showing the rear side of the metal sheet or plate which forms a part of my index. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing a portion of one of the spacing and retaining strips. of one of the name cards or slips. Fig. 5 is a face view of the index. Fig. 6 is a side or edge view of the same. Fig. 7 is a vertical sectional view on the line 77 of F ig. 5, and Fig. 8 is a horizontal section on the line 88 of Fig. 5.
In the practical embodiment of my invention I employ a thin metallic sheet or plate A, which has a series of slots A punched therein, said slots being arranged in definite order, that is they are arranged in parallel series with narrow intervening spaces. The portion of metal punched from the face of the plate to provide the slot A is not detached but is pressed rearwardly at a right angle to the face of the plate providing a horizontal rest or stop A said Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view rest grater A e ving a re t or suppor for the central portion B of the name card lip 1 the b dy portion of aid ca d being passed through the slot next above the rest or support upon'which it is to rest and the upper portion of the card will then be displayed above the slot, and in order to maintain these cards or slips in a flat position and also prevent their accidental dislocation I employ spacing strips C, which are attached to the front face of the slotted plate intermediate the rows of slots as shown, it being understood of course that the slotted plate A is fastened to a suitable back or support D, which in the present instance is shown as the top or cover of the cabinet for containing the account system, but it will of course be understood that this lndex can be attached to any other suitable back or support. The spacing strips C are preferably of thin metal channeled as shown at C, and flanged as shown at C the panel shape of the strips maintaining the flanges at a. sufiicient distance from the face of the slotted plate to permit the ready insertion and removal of the ends of the cards beneath the said flanges as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5.
In order to protect the index against dirt and the like I provide a transparent covering panel E, preferably of glass mounted in a suitable metallic frame F hinged at the lower corners F and adapted to engage spring catches F at the upper corners.
In operation spring catches F are pushed out, the transparent covering released and turned down to a horizontal position. Any card can then be removed by catching hold of the central portion thereof and pulling upwardly thereon, and a card can be inserted whenever desired by introducing the central portion through the proper slot, inserting the ends beneath the flanges of the facing strip and forcing the same downwardly until the lower end of the central portion of the card contacts with the horizontal rest or support upon the rear face of the slotted sheet or plate just below the slot through which the card isintroduced, and as each slot has a corresponding rest or support it will be understood that each and every name -cardor slip introduced will be held against s ecification of Letters P ate'ntr l a-te ted Feb. 29,1-91( i.
' bined system of both.
What I claim is: An index comprising a slotted plate or sheet the slots-of said plate being arranged strips attached to the face of the plate or sheet at the ends of the slots.
JOSEPH MILLER.
