IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-CHIMNEVS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,341, dated July 25, 1871; antedated July 12, 1871.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL E. Soi/nes, of Washington, in the county of Washington and in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lam p-Chimneys 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which makes part of this specitication, and in which- Figure 1 represents a view, in perspective, ot my improved lamp-chimney; Fig. 2, a vertical section through a portion ofthe same at the line w a; of Fig. 3; Fig. 3, a horizontal section of the same at the line y y of Fig. 2 Fig. 4, a vertical section of the same, showing a diti'erent manner of hinging the sections; Fig. 5, a horizontal section at the line y y of Fig. 4. Figs. 6 and 8 are views, in elevation, showing different forms of chimneys; and Figs. 7 and9, views, in perspective, of chimneys which are hinged at their tops.

The object of my invention is to provide a lampchimney bythe use of which the lamp can be lighted without removing it therefrom, aswell as to diminish the risk or' breakage 5 to which ends, my improvement consists in dividing the chimney vertically into two sections, which are held in position in suitable grooved rests, one of which is permanently secured to the cap of the lamp or made in a piece therewith, and the other hinged either to the stationary rest or to the cap of the lamp, so as to enable one of the sections to be swung away from the other when the lamp 1s to be lighted without removing either of them from its position in the rest.

In the accompanying drawing, which shows a` convenient arrangement of parts for carrying out the objects of my invention, my lampchimney, which is of the ordinary shape, is shown as divided vertically into two sections, A and B, of which A is the iixed and B the movable one. The sections are held in position upon the lampcap C by the grooved rests A B', being secured therein by set-screws a or springs b in the ordidinary manner. In the drawing the fixed rest A is shown as formed in a piece with the lampcap C, which is of ordinary construction and adapted to the use of any kind of burner; but it may be made separately and secured thereto, if preferred. The movable section of the rest B 1s hinged either to the iixed rest A' or to the lampcap C by the hinges a b1, according as it is desired that the section of the chimney which it carries shall oscillate in a horizontal or vertical plane. The red lines in Figs. 3 and 4 show the latter as swung out for lighting the lamp in each case respectively. Figs. l, 4, 7, and 9 show the chimney as divided symmetrically, or at its center line; but it may be divided out of the center, if preferred, or in a curved plane, so as to make the movable section smaller at the base than the fixed, by which means, as exhibited in Fig. 6, the movable rest can be made smaller and lighter, and the section B is Vswung with greater ease. The chimney may likewise be divided in a curved plane for a portion of its length only, as shown in Fig. 8, in which case a plate spring, b2, is used to hold it in position. Figs. 7 and 9 show the chimney as hinged at its top, the rests A and B being now used as collars secured thereon and hinged either in the same manner as before or by means of a transverse pin, d. A clamp, c, may be used in this case to hold them in contact, if desired.

From the construction of my chimney it will be seen that it allows ready access to the wick of the lamp without removing it therefrom, and the liability of breakage from unequal contraction or expansion of the glass is much less than where the chimney is made in a single piece. Short pins or rivets, one on each side, may be substituted for the transverse pin d., Fig. 9, if deemed preferable.

Havin g thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Avertical section of a lamp-chimney, hinged at its bottom, substantially as described.

2. A vertical section of a lamp-chimney, hinged at its top, substantially as described.

3. Avertical section of a lamp-chimney, hinged as shown in Fig. 8. y

4. Avertical section of a lamp-chimney, hinged as shown in Fig. 8 and provided with a spring, b2,

to hold it in position.
