I, WILLIAM H. Boussu., ofthe city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State. of New York, have of which the following is a specification. v
My invention relates to the nianner of constructing the bases of a lantern.
The invention consists- Firstgln the arrangement 1n a lantern of thesup-' porting hase-plate and accenni-'bremer sogas erica-ve an annular opening between the said base plate and burner for thepassage of light downward. Y Second, in the arrangement. in a lantern -vwith a centrai lamp-and a surrounding annular opening of a dellectng hase-plate, whichreects the light radiating into the annular opening inward, su as to illumine the space under .the center ot' the lamp. A Third, inthe arrangement of the baseplatewith the vertical wires of the guard, and the ring which supports the ollreservoir,.whereby the base-plate is sustainedaway from contact with said ring, as hereinaiterV described.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 'Lis a sectional 'elevation of my improved lantern. y
Figure 1I Iis a sectional plan of the base of the lantern with they glass-globe removed. 4
Like'letters designate like parts in each of the iig- BTB, the vertical wires of the 'motori O, `'the oilfoup or reservoir;
D, the ringin which the latter issupported; and E, thegl v,olie
tingv withintlre ring D and restingon tlreupper edge of the base-plate A.
through holes bin the The vertical wires pass 'guard or globe pro-l arnngedwithin the wire-guard, r
upper portion of the base-plate, and are seoured'to the ring D, as shown in Fig. I, whereby the base-plate is maintained in its relative position away from contact with the ring D, leaving an annular space,l f, between them.
The rirys of light entering thiey space and impinging against the inner und. polished surface of the base` plate A -are reflected inward, in accordance with the well-known law o'r`optics, and made to converge until they meet at focuses underneath the center of the lantern, thereby illuminating the whole'spaoe, and preventing casting shadows, which are so objectionable.
G is the top .or cap oil the lantern, secured to the upper ring HI of thewire guard by means 4of a hinge and a spring catch, i, which enables itfto be turned backdfor removing the yglobe through the top of the guar v v What I claim as my invention is 1. The arrangement in a lantern of the supporting base-plate A and a central burner, so as to leave au annular opening between the burner and bnseplnt for the transmission of the light downward, as hereinbefore set forth.
2. The arrangement in a lantern, and with a central lamp and surrounding annular opening f, of the d`e fleeting base-plats A, which redeots the light inward, so as to illumine the space under the lamp, as hereinbefore setforth.
3. The arrangement in a lantern of the base-plate A, ring l), und vertical wires B, as hereinbefore set forth. l
