Be it known that I, CLARENCE G. FISHER, a citizen of the United States, and'resident of Rochester, Monroe county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to paper fasteners and more particularly to that type of fasteners by means of which a plurality of papers or letters are pinned and securely held together.

The objects of the invention are to provide an improved fastener of this type which 15. is of extremely simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and in which either .or both of the usual front and back mem-- bers are formed from wire, which can be conveniently shaped to provide a loop for hanging up the fastener with the papers attached thereto, and which .is also adapted to reduce the liability of breaking off the usual points with which such fasteners are provided. a A further object of the invention is to rovide a fastener in which the front memer conceals a minimum amount of the reading matter on the top sheet of the papers to which the fastener is attached.

Referring to the drawings and more partl cularly to Figs. 1 and 2, 20 indicates a serles of papers arranged one above the other and secured together by means of my im proved fastener which consists of a backing member 21 having the flexible end portions or points 22 and 23 adapted to be passed through openings in the papers 20. The backing member 21 shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is of the form shown in Fig. 2 of my prior Patent No. 952,322, granted March 15, 1910,

A front member consisting of a wire body 24 provided with the end loops 25 and 26 is arranged above the pa- 'pers 20 and booperates with the points 22 and 23 to secure the papers together by having the points passed through the end loops 25 and 26 and bent either outwardly or inwardlv into a plane substantially parallel with the body of the backing member, as clearly indicated in the drawings.

From Fig. 2 it will be observed that by providing a front member which is formed of wire bent up, as shown, a minimum amount of the reading matter of the upper paper will be concealed and the points 22 will be bent over a rounded surface which will avoid breaking the points off at the bends. In fasteners of this type the points are frequently bent for the purpose of removing or adding papers and therefore.

when the points are bent over a shar edge as in the constructions heretofore use they are extremely liable to break off at the bends.-

In. the fastener shown in Figs. 3 and 4, I have provided a backing member consisting of a wire 27 having loops 28 and 29 through which are passed the end portions of a flexible flat wire or tape 30, the medial portion of ,which is arranged alongside of the Wire 27. As shown in Fig. 3 the tape 30 is arranged above the wire 27 and at the loops 28 and 29 is bent downwardly and passed through the loops and then bent upwardly to engage the loops 25 and 26 in the front member 24, the latter being similar to that shown in Fi s. 1 and 2. The members 24 and 27 are t us similar in construction but the member 27 is slightly shorter than the member 24, as clearly shown in from member adapted to be used in place of the front member shown in Fig. 2, and consisting of a wire 33 bent in the form of a rectangle.

It is frequently desirable to have the points on the backing member bent inwardly on the front member and secured under a portion ofthe latter, and in Figs. 7 and 8 I have illustrated a modification of my invention adapted to be used in this way. In this modification a wire is bent in the form of a rectangle and is provided with the end portions 34 and 35 which are connected by the body portion 36. The ends of the wire are bent inwardly from the end portions 34 and 35 to form the loops 37 having the outwardly projecting portions 38 beneath which the points 22 and 23 may be arranged.

In Fig. 10 I have illustrated another modification of the invention which "is adapted to be used in place of the members 24 and 27 and in which the portion of the wire between the loops 42 and 43 is provided with a bend 44 so that all of this portion will not conceal the same line of reading matter on the paper over which the member is placed.

In Fig. 11 I have shown a front member similar to that shown in Figs. 1 to 4, with the exception that the central portion of the wire between the loops 25 and 26 is' offset to form a third loop 45 by means of which the fastener, together with the papers attached thereto may be hung up.

In Fig. 12 I have illustrated a modification of the form shown in Fig. 5 and adapted for the same purpose as Fig. 11.

In Fig. 9 I have illustrated another modification in which the front member is formed with the end loops 39 and 40 and a central off-set portion 41, beneath which the end portions of the tape 30 may be arranged. The backing member shown in this modification is similar to that shown in Figs. 3 and 4 with the exception that the member 27 is replaced by a member having a central loop 45, such as is shown in Figs. 11 and 12.

By means of this central loop the papers can be readily hung up with the front of the file outward.

While I have illustrated several embodiments of my invention, it will be readily understood, by those skilled in the art, that .various other modifications may be constructed, within the scope of the appended claims, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to the particular constructions shown and described.

In describing the various modifications of my invention I have used the words front and back and similarterms in their relative sense for the purpose of defining the arrangement'of the parts, it being understood that the use of the invention is not limited to the arrangement described.

Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters- Patent'is,

1. A paper fastener comprising a backing member provided with flexible points adapted to be arranged at substantially right angles to the body thereof, and a front member made of round wire and having a body portion and end portions extending transversely of the body portion and connected by said body portion and adapted to be engaged by said points and secured by bending said points into a plane substantially parallel with the body portion of said backing member.

2. A paper fastener comprising a backing member provided with flexible points adapted to be arranged at substantially right angles to the body thereof, and a front member made of round wire and having a body portion and end loops connected by said body portion and adapted to embrace said points and be engaged thereby and sea cured by bending said points into a plane substantially parallel with the body portion of said backingmember.

A paper fastener comprising a backing member provided with flexible points adapted to be arranged at substantially right angles to the body thereof, and a front member made of round wire and having a bodyportion and end portions extending transversely of the body portion and adapted to be engaged by said points and secured by bending said points into a plane substantially parallel with the body portion of said backing member, one of said members having a loop therein between its end portions, for the purpose described.

A paper fastener comprising a backing member provided with flexible points adapted to be arranged at substantially right angles to the body thereof, and a front member made of round wire and having a body portion and end loops adapted to embrace said points and be engaged thereby and secured by bending said points into a plane substantially parallel with the body of said backing member, one of said members having a loop therein between its end portions, for the purpose described. 7

5. A paper fastener comprising a backing member provided with flexible .points adapted to be arranged at substantially right of its length between said loops, for the purpose described.

6. A paper fastener comprising a backing member provided with flexible points adapted to be arranged at substantially right angles to the body thereof, and a front member made of round wire and having a body portion and ends arranged substan-- tially in the same plane and adapted to be engaged by said points and secured by bending the points inwardly into a plane substantially parallel with the body of said backing member, and said front member also having portions adapted to overlie said points and hold the same.

7. A paper fastener comprising a backing member consisting of a wire having a pair of loops formed therein and arranged in the same plane and a flexible tape arranged alongside and in front of said wire between said loops and having its end portions passed rearwardly through said loops and bent around the loops to project forwardly therefrom at substantially right angles to the plane thereof, and a front member consisting of a body portion having at its ends means for embracing said tape and secured by bending the ends of the tape into a plane substantially parallel with the plane of said loops.

8. A paper fastener comprising a backing member consisting of a wire having a pair of loops formed therein and arranged in the same plane and a flexible tape having its end portions passed through said loops and bent at substantially right angles to the plane thereof, and a front member consisting of a wire bent to form a pair of loops arranged in a plane parallel with the plane of said first-mentioned loops and adapted to embrace said tape and be secured by bending the ends of the tape into aplane substantially parallel with the planes of said loops.

9. A paper fastener comprising a backing member, consisting of a wire body having end loops and a loop arranged at the middle thereof and adapted to be attached to a support, and a flexible tape arranged along the front of said wire body and secured thereto by having its end portions passed rearwardly through saidend loops and around the exterior thereof to project forwardly therefrom, and a front member having ends adapted to be engaged by said tape and se- 7 cured by bending the ends of the tape into a plane substantially parallel with the plane of the front member.
