Description
HARDMAN 6L VOSE.
Whifetree.
Patented Sept. 26, 1854.
'UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE.
THOS. HARDMAN AND ALBERT VOSE, OF PITTSFIELD, VERMONT.
WHIFFLETREE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 11,727, dated September'26, 1854.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS HARDMAN and ALBERT VosE, both of Pittsfield, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Method of Constructing a SafetyWhitHetree; and we declare hereby that the following is a fulland exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken in the line m.
The nature of our invention consists in providing a frog shaped iron to connect the tug with the whiiiietree by means of a gain or slot and slide and ketch so as to prevent danger from the tugs unfastening and are easily unfastened in. case of accident of the horse.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
We construct the wood part A, of our whiHetree of common size and dimensions and cut in the wood about an inch from the end a gain or slot B, as seen in Figs. l and to slide in over the iron B', and catch with a spring catch as seen at D in ldot-ted lines Fig. l, holding the iron B firmly in its place, then covering the sides and top of the wood to about 6 inches from the end with a plate of brass or iron, except the gain or slot A and the side slot c into which the slide passes, cutting a square hole in the top for the thumb piece F of the spring catch G which fastens the slide C, to project above the top of the whitletree.
Now the operation of our Whiffletree is such that it may be used for any place in which the whilietree is used. The iron B may be fastened to a leather tug or chain by means 0f the screw bolt or any other device. Then to fasten it to the whilietree place the iron B in the slot A, then turn the slide C over it and it fastens firmly by the spring catch G. To unfasten the tug bear down the catch by the thumb piece F and turn out the slide C by the thumb piece L, which liberates the tug or iron B.
What we claim as our invention and de; sire to secure by Letters Patent isi The use of the iron B fastening in the gain or slot by means of a slide o-r catch substantially as above described.
Signed and sealed in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
