UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoEf- JOHN C. FORSTER, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
VEGETABLE-SLICER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 22, 1915. Serial No. 52,074.
slices are put, the entire potato, carrot, beet,
apple or other fruit or vegetable is used, there being no waste.
The invention isembodied in the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, Figure lthereof being a view in perspective of the cutter shown in operative position with relation to a potato. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device; Fig. 3 is an edge elevation; and Fig. 4 is an end view.
Referring to the drawings, the substantially fiat blade 2 is provided at its wider end with the finger hole 3, the blade tapering toward its opposite end, and projecting from said'end is the pivot or journal-forming pin l having a sharpened extremity. The pin is disposed at an angle to the relatively flat blade 9, so that when the pin is forced into a potato, etc., at substantially right angles to the surface to be cut, the blade is inclined with reference to such surface in such manner as to present its sharpened longitudinal edge!) at an efficient slicing angle.
The cutter is illustrated in operation in Fig. 1, A designating the unsliced portion of a potato, and B the spiral or'cork-screw slice produced by the progressive movement of the improved slicing device.
The screw-like feed device 6 carried by pin 4 for advancing the latter through the potato, etc., and thusholding the blade in slicing position, is preferably of split-washer Copies of this patent may be obtained for thereto, as will be understood. This simple expedient provides an inexpensive feed device that operates to so advance the blade as to maintain the thickness of the spiral slice substantiallyuniform. V
A further characteristic of the invention is the position of feed device 6 on the pin, being spaced backwardly from the pointed end thereof in order that there maybe asubstantial portion of the pin forwardly from the feed device. This forwardly extending Patented Feb.22 ,191.6.
portion operates to hold the pin to a true 1 or straight course after it 6 advancing in the pin forward in such course. The rear longitudinal edge of blade 2 is preferably deflected to form the rib 7 which not only strengthens the blade, but also has the effect of deflecting the slice has been entered in the potato, etc., the flight-like feed device.
away from and clearing the blade when the latter is rotated.
In operation, the potato, apple, etc., is held in one hand, and with pin 4 projected centrally thereinto the blade is rotated by the other hand. the pin serving as a pivot or journal, whereby the fruit or vegetableis sliced in spiral form as illustrated in Fig.
I. If the position of the cutter is inverted as shown in that view, a spiral slice of considerable length may be formed without breaking, although it will be understood.
that the device may be used in a reverse position, or in fact in any position that may be most convenient.
I claim:
A vegetable slicer of the type substantially as described, consisting essentially of a slicer blade provided with a pivot and guide pin fixed thereto and projecting laterally therefrom, and a single convolution spiral feed; and cutting blade of relatively large diameter rigid on and concentric with said pin and spaced a substantial distance from said slicing blade and from the point of said pin.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature v in presence of two witnesses.
