. (No Model.)
. J. SEUBERT. VEGETABLE PARER AND SLIGER.
No. 530,856. Patented Dec. 11, 1894.
(s y agan" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH SEUBERT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
VEGETABLE PARER AND SLICER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of 'Letters Patent No. 530,856, dated December 11, 1894. Application filed April 23, 1894. Serial No. 508.645. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SEUBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vegetable Parers and Slicers, of which the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in vegetable parers and slicers, and has particular reference to that class of such devices in which the parer, and slicer are combined in one utensil, and in which the slices cut will be of equal thickness, owing to the automatic f eed of the slicer into the vegetable to be sliced.
The object of my invention is to provide a parer and slicer of this character, which will be simple in operation, durable in construction, and attractiveinappearance.
To these ends, my invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1- is a plan view of my device. Fig. 2- is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3- is a vertical cross section, taken through the slicing blade; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of my device, showing it applied to use as a slicer.
Similar letters of reference indicate similar parts in all of the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the slicing blade of my device, which is at one end rounded, at a, for greater conveniencein using. Secured to the blade A, nearits rounded end, is a screw B, extending downwardly, an d having its threads a suificient distance apart, so as to hold the slicer blade in position, and thereby cut slices of even thickness.
To the end of the slicer blade A, opposite the end a, and formed integral therewith, is an extension 0, of greater width than that of the slicer blade. Longitudinally of this extension, near its center, as shown at c, a U- shaped incision is made in said extension, and the part included in the inner side of said incision, stamped downward, as at o, and then sharpened, to form the parer. This extension is inclined upward ata slight angle, for greater convenience in using the parer. In-
tegrally formed with the said extension is an angular portion D, having its edges sharpened, for use in removing the eyes of potatoes, &c.
A handle E is suitably secured to the top of the blade A, to turn the device when it is used as a slicer.
For the greatersafetyof the person using the device in paring a vegetable, and also to preserve the sharpened edge of the slicer blade, I use a sheath F, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. When the device is to be used as a slicer, this sheath is removed and laid to one side.
The operation of my device is as follows: Should it be desired to pare and slice any vegetable, a potato, for instance, the potato is taken in the left hand and the parer (the sheath being on the slicer blade) in the right. The parer is thenpassed over the potato and the rind taken off. If after paring, there are any eyes in the potato to be taken out, the angular portion D is inserted point downward, and the parer given a complete rotary turn, when the eye will drop out. After the potato has been prepared read yfor slicing, the sheath is removed from the parer and the point of the screw B, is pressed into the potato. The
parer is then given a rotary motion, the screw being the pivot, and as the threads of the screw work into the potato, the slicer makes its out, and by continuing the motion, the potato is sliced in a continuous strip. After the potato is completely sliced, by cutting through the center with an ordinary knife, the slices will become separated and suitable for potato chips, &c.
Minor changes in construction, &c., may be made without altering the right and advantages of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is-- 1. In a vegetable parer and slicer, the combination of a slicing blade, having one of its ends rounded; ascrew attached to the rounded end of said slicing blade; anextension formed integrally with said slicer blade at the opposite end to that to which the screw isattached; said extension being inclined to a slight de gree from the horizontal, and having therein a parer; an angular shaped portion formed integrally with and located at the end of said extension, said portion having its two outer V edges sharpened; and a handle secured to said slicer blade, substantially as described. 5
2. In a vegetable parer and slicer, the combination of a slicing blade, having one of its ends rounded; a screw attached to the rounded end of said slicing blade; an extension formed integral with said slicer bladeat the opposite end to that to which the screw is attached, said extension being inclined to a slight degree from the horizontal, and having therein a parer; an angular shaped portion formed integral with and located at the end of said extension, said portion having its two outer edges' sharpened; a handle secured to said slicer blade and a removable sheath, adapted r 5 to fit the sharpened edge of said slicer blade,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set :my hand this 2d day ofiApril, 189;.
JOSEPH SEUBERT.
