To all whom it muy concern.'
Be it known thatJ 1,' Tnrnonoini W. MUCKLE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Fur nace Parts; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descript on of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in furnace parts, and while the same may be used with other types of furnaces, it is more particularly applicable to assay furnaces, in which a liquid fuel is forced into the combustion chamber of the furnace.
' rl`he invention being divided out of my former application for metallurgical furnaces and furnace parts,` #31,500, filed June l, 1915, the same will be described with reference to a metallurgical furnace of the inutile type.
In mutlie furnaces, heated by gas or hydro-carbon fuel, it frequently occurs that, Vupon initial ignition the compression and impact of the combustible fluid is so great, the muiiie is either broken or is blown from its seat, causing the contents ofthe ore containing vessels therein to become spilled. The primary object of the present invention, therefore. is to overcome this disadvantageous feature, by providing means, whereby a substantial opening to the atmospliere may be'created upon initially firing the fur-nace, which opening may be closed after the furnace is started, and which opening is located at the front of the furnace and permits of the inspection of the combustion chamber and regulation of the burner at the saine time, and also provides means for inserting'a lighted torch into tlm combustion chamber for purposes of ignition. v 1
lVith these ends in view, the invention consists in the novel elements -of construction and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described inthe specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
While the invention is not restricted to the exact details shown and described, still, for
the purpose ofmore fully understandingW the saine, reference is had. to the accompanying drawings, illustrating a practical embodiment of the same, in which drawings like characters designate the saine parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1, is a longitudinal sectional view through the furnace, the burner boss being partly bro-ken away, and the burner and fan blower connections being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view of the front of the furnace, the burner being shown in elevation, and a section of the burner boss being shown in dotted lines, illustrating its reinovability. Fig. 3, is a side elevational detail view of the burner boss, with its parts shown in closed relation. Fig. 4, is a similar view in front elevation, and Fig. 5, is a view in vertical section. taken along the line 6 6 of Fig. 4.
l will now briefly refer to various parts of the furnace illustrated, although they form no essential part of the present invention.
l designates a hollow sectional furnace body o-f fire clay, having a forward opening or door 2, the upper portion of the furnace body providing the inutile chamber 3, and the lower portion providing the combustion chamber 4.
5, is the muiiie provided with a tubular projection 6, located below a flue 7, having a damper 8, the whole cooperating to create a suction or ejector force through said tubular projection to facilitate the discharge of fumes and gases from said mutlle.
9 is another flue having a damper 10, and both fiues open into the inutile chamber.
11 is a shelf at the forward opening or door of the muilie chamber, and 12 is an iron sheathing incasing the furnace, the furnace being supported on a suitable stand or framework 13.

sisting of a movable closure, vwhich may be opened when the furnace is started to admit of ignitmg the combustible charge, but more 'important still, to provide a substantial opening to the atmosphere from the combustion chamber, the burner opening being of much greater diameter' than the nozzle of the burner, which is spaced therefrom. vT his opening to the atmosphere relieves the com pression within the combustion chamber upon initially igniting the charge, a desir` able feature, as it has been found that this compression and the impact of the fiame, frequently blows the muflie from its seat, spilling the contents of the ore containing vessels in the maille, or breaks the muffle itself, as hereinbefore mentioned. This movable closure also permits of the inspection of the combustion chamber and the condition or extent of combustion therein, even while the burner is being regulated. It forms no special feature of the burner, however, but is a part of the furnace itself, and cooperates therewith more particularly than with the burner. I wish to state, however, that I do not limit myself to the particular form of this closure as shown, for it may be variously designed, and made in one or more parts of iron, fire clay or other suitable substance; but in the drawings I have illust'rated a practical segmental form of a burner boss, which is designated at 19 as being of conical structure.
The lower section 20 is shown with a flange 21, which is bolted to the sheathing 12, and the upper section 22 may have tongues or ribs Q3, adapted to fit into grooves 2li, formed in the lower section, to prevent accidental displacement of the members The upper or movable section may also be provided with a lip or lug 25, to enable a rod or wire to be hooked into the apertured lug for lifting up said movable closure and replacing the same on the stationary closure. Thus it will be seen vmore clearly from Figs. l and Qfthat, when the closure 22 is removed, a substantial opening 26 is provided at the upper portion of the burner opening to relieve the compression inthe combustion chamber, and after the furnace is fired this cover is replaced during further operations. It may also be removedfor inspecting the condition or extent of combustion in the combustion chainber.
In Fig. l, 27 designates a plurality of ofl set pedestals for supporting a muflie plate 28, which in turn provides a fire clay di vision plate between the maille and combustion chambers, and directly supports the muftle. I consider this an important feature as it takes theslioclr off ofthe inutile, but as the same is specifically referred to and claimed in my former application mentioned, it is believed that further description in the present applicatirn is unnecessary.
It is also believed that, in view of the drawings and the foregoing complete statement of the function of my improvements, further description of same and the mode of operating would be unnecessary and superfluous. and
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a. metallurgical er similar furnace, having a combustion chamber and a burner opening leading thereto, a hollow separable boss member communicating with said burner opening, comprising y upper and lower portions, the lower portion `of said boss ineinberrbeing fixed and the upper portion being removably seated on said Vlower portion to directlyopen anoclose a large portion ofv said burner opening to the atmosphere, and a burner for said burner opening.
2. In a metallurgical or similar furnace having a combustion chamber and a burner opening leading thereto, a burner adjacent said opening, and a two part boss member interposed between saidburner opening and said burner, forming anopen continuation therebetween, the lower portion of said boss being fixed and the upper portion being removably seated on said lower portion to openV and close a large portion of said burner opening to the atmosphere as de sired.
3. In a metallurgical or similar furnace having combustion chamber and a burner opening leading thereto, a brrne1 adjacent said opening, having a nozzle of substantially lesser diameter than said burner opening, and a two-part boss member interposed between said burner opening and bin-ner, forming a conical continuation therebetween, the lower portion ofjsaid boss being ned and the upper portion being removably seated on said lower portionrto open and close the upper portion of said burner opening to the atmosphere as desiree.
