R. M. BARNETT.
GRATE.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 10, 19l5.

lwuwwtox RALPH M. BARNETT, OF LENOIR CITY, TENNESSEE.
GRATE.
Specification of Easement;
* I a 1 Application filed July 10, 1915. Serial No. 39,091.
T0 aZZwhomz'tmay concern: w w
Be it known that I, RALPH M. BARNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lenoir City, in the county of London and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates, of which the following is a specification, refere'nce being had to the accompanying drawings.
ments in grates and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and. adapted for use in connection with household'ranges or the like and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this character having novel and improved means whereby water may circulate directly under the fire thus eliminating the use of water backs and coils.
Furthermore it is an object of my invention to provide a novel and improved fitting The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the 7 better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein-'- Figure 1 is a view partly in plan and partly in section of the device as herein embodied; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings S denotes a fragment of a range of conventional construction and with which my improved grate G coacts. As herein dis-,
closed the grate G is of such configuration as to properly fit within the fire box of the stove and is provided at one extremity with a trunnion 1 terminating in the angular portion 2 whereby the same may be operatively engaged with a suitable implement for imparting requisite rocking movement to the grate. The opposite extremity of the This invention relates to certain improvegrateiG is provided with the trunnion 3,
of a materially v greater diameter than the d ameter of the trunnion 1 and saidtrunnion 1s provided'with' the ports 4i in com mu'nicationwith the ports disposed longi,- tudinally thereof and 111 communication with the opposite extremities of the conduit 5 formed within the grate 1 and disposed around the margins thereof.
The trunnion 3 projects exteriorly of the stove S and is mounted within the sleeve or fitting 6 provided with the diametrically opposed ports 7 and 8 adapted to'communi cate with the ports 4 hereinbefore referred to and said port '7 being adapted for communication with a suitable source of water supply while the port 8 is adapted for communication with a conventional boiler or other point of delivery. I
The trunnion '3 snugly fits within the sleeve or fitting 6 and has its free end portion reduced to afford an annular shoulder 9 adapted to coact with the annular shoulder 10 within the bore of the sleeve or fitting 6 afforded by restricting the intermediate diameter of the bore of said sleeve or fitting and between said shoulders 9 and 10 is adapted to be positioned suitable packing. Insertible within the outer extremity of the sleeve or fitting 6 and coacting with the outer annular shoulder 11 afforded by'the restricted portion of the bore of said sleeve or fitting is a conventional gland nut 12 whereby additional packing may be emploved in connection with the trunnion 3.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a grate constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well Patented Feb. 15 1916.
adapted for use by reason of the convenience 1 and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also'be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
' hat I claim is 1. A fire grate having a conduit therein extending substantially entirely around the marginal portion thereof, said grate being communication with the extremities of the V conduit. 7
2. A fire grate having a conduit therein extending substantially entirely around the marginal portion thereof, said grate being provided with an extension having ports in communication with the extremities of the conduit, said extension serving as a trunnion, a sleeve surrounding said extension and proiide'd with ports adapted to communicate with the ports of the. extension.
3. A; fire grate having a conduit therein extending substantially entirely around the marginal portion thereof, said grate being provided with an extension having ports in communication With the extremities of the conduit, said extension serving as a trunnion, a sleeve surrounding said extension and provided With ports adapted to communicate With the ports of the extension, the outer extremity of the extension being reduced to afford an annular shoulder and the intermediate portion of the bore of the sleeve being restricted to afford an annularshoulder, and packing interposed between said annular shoulders.
4. A fire grate having a conduit therein extending substantially ventirely around the marginal portion thereoflsaid grate being provided with an extension having ports in communication with the extremitles of the conduit, said extension serving as a trunnion, a sleeve surrounding said extensionand pro ided with ports adaptedto C0111- nnilnieate' with the ports of the extension, said extension having its outer extremityiof reduced diameter to afford an annular shoulder, the intermediate portion of the bore of the sleeve being restricted to =af-I In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the. presence of two Witnesses. RALPH M; BARNETTJ \Vitnesses I. ML HARTSOOK, A. A; Moxonn.
