To all wrmn it may concern.'
Beit known that I, ROBERT E. MoFEITr, a` citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ludlow, Kenton county, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves; and 'I do declare the following'to be a clear, full, and exact description thereof, attention being called to .the accompanying drawing, with the reference characters marked thereon, which form also a part of'this specication.
This invent-ion relates to an improved construction of steam-valves and consists of certain novel features, as hereinafter described and pointed out inthe claims and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in whichz- 4 Figure 1, shows a `longitudinal section throughthe housing of the valve. Fig. 2, showsparts of the precedingfigure, partly in 'section and partly in elevation. Fig. 3, shows in underside view part of the valvestem. Fig. 4, shows the end of'this stem and part of a lmanipulating handle connected thereto. Fig. 5, is a vertical crosssection of this stem as it appears in Fig. 2, showing alsol the valve and its position with relation to this stem. Fig. 6, is a vertical cross-section on line 6 6 of Fig. 2. In the drawing a pipe-conduit is shown of which 9 and 10 are alined parts; Passage through this conduit is controlled by a valve A, of which B is the housing or shell and the wall of which forms an approximately globular inclosure for a chamber b which contains part of the valve-actuating means. This chamber has two oppositely locatedA openings which aline with each other and also with the parts of the pipe-conduit when the housing is connected in position. The wall of this housing is extended around these openings in it, said extensions being so formed as tol roduce two attaching nipples 11 and 12 which permit the aforementioned connection. The opening at. one of these nipples, at 11 in this case, forms the inlet to valve-chamber b and the other forms the outlet from it.
' The end of nipple 11 constitutes the seat 13 for valve A, the underside of which is tted to this seat. Passage through the valve-housing is closed when the valve rests upon this seat as shown in Fig.` 1. InFig.

wings a are provided on its underside which arefitted to slide within nipple 11. The valve is actuated for raising it by a wedgeshaped cam-block 14, which is connected to a valve-stem 15 supported to permit it to be moved in a longitudinal direction and transverse with reference to the valve-chamber and the alined nipples of the housing. It is supported for such movement at its inner end in al pocket 16 and at its outer portion in a neck 17, both alined transversely to the nipples and formed between them in opposite sidesof the housing, these sides being outwardly extended for the purpose.
In assembling, the stem without the camblock is inserted through the outwardly open neck 17, a stuffing-box 18 'beingformed in this latter to receive packing, which is held in place by the usual gland 19 and permits formation of a steam tight-joint. The inner part of the inserted stem is seated inthe outer part of pocket 16 to which it is fitted. No fit is attempted in the inner part of the pocket where the same is cored out larger to permit necessary clearance of the machinetool whereby the pocket is formed. Such an enlargement is desirable to prevent resistance to the movement `of the valve-stem, by any matter apt to work into this pocket.

The camblock is introduced through one of the nipples and to facilitate its connection to the stem, a cut-out 22 is provided in the side of this latter in which it is seated. Action on the valve is by means of the,l
cam-surface on the free side of the camblock which acts on the underside of the valve or on parts,` connected therewith. In this case it acts on the underside of the wings, which iunderside is shapedcomplementary to the cam-surface of the cam- .block. The arrangement isbydpreference so ,that of four wings provlde the lower Inipple 11 and extends into a notch 28,
alined endsof two wings a form this underside. A cut-out 24 is provided in the-alined ends of the other two wings whereby the valve, by straddling the block, retains always its proper engagement therewith with-` out interfering withV the movement..
Outward movement of the valve-stem by means of a handle 25 raises the valve asv shown in Fig. 2. Inward movement permits it to seat as shown in Fig. 1, it seating of course with the pressure.
Proper engagement between block and valve may be adjusted and maintained against wearv by the use of washers 26, inserted below the block.
The valve may of course bey connected in any position, horizontal, inverted, etc., and therefore means are necessary to prevent it from dropping out of nipple 11, in case it is inverted and the pressure is oli'. A set-screw 27 is shown in Fig. 2, which is seated in cut into the edge of oneof the wings. A coilspring 29 is shown in Fig. 1, a boss 31 being provided onthe'valvewhereby, at one of its'ends, the spring is held in place. At its other end the spring is held by a bridge 32 which might be provided in an extended part of nipple l1. By preference'this extension is rovided by means of a separate member or onnet 33 seated upon nipple ll.
Handle 25 is so connected to the housing that it may be set to move in any plane to suit conditions, or convenience of the operator. For such purpose a coupling ring 34 is used to which the pivotal connection of the handle by means of a link 35 is accomplished. This rin is adjustably seated upon neck 17 so t at it may be shifted around on the same until the handle is in the desired position, after which said ring is tidghtened by means of a screw 36. The han e is loosely jointed to the valve-stem, so that this ad'ustment of it does not interfere with or adect the position of the stem. This latter is held to the handle, to move it longitudinally, between two shoulders 37 and 38, the inner one of which is formed by reducing the outer end of the stem. The outer one is formed by a nut 38, seated upon this reduced end.

Disconnection of the parts attached to nipple 11 gives at once access to the valve and to its seat, to permit renewal required, or refitting, without involving any other part of the valve or housing.
Having described my invention, I claim las new:

In valve-construction, the combination of a housing having alined pipe-attaching nipples on opposite sides the outer end of one of which constitutes a valve-seat, a valve fitted to this seat, a bonnet fitted to this nipple, extending beyond the valve seated on this nipple and adapted for pipe-connection,
permit access to the' valve-seat, a valve-stem slidably supported opposite the inner side of this valve, means provided on the stem adapted to actuate the valve and means to manipulate the valve-stem.

In valve-construction, the combination of a housing having pipe-attaching nipples one of which contains a valve-seat, a valve fitted to this seat, a bonnet iitted to this nipple, a spring carried in this bonnet to hold the valve normally seated, a valve-stem slidably supported in the housing, a cam carried on this stem adapted `to raise the valve against the action of the spring and means to manipulate this stem.
