Be it known that L'MIonAEL J. REInLY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and
State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Machines,-ofwhich the following is a specification.
My invention relatesto improvements in ironing machines and has'for its object the provision of amachine of'this character which s of Improved constructlon and operation and especially adapted for use in scribed and claimed.
ironing corsets.
:The invention consists the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter de- The invention will behest understood by v reference to the accompanying, drawings forming which, r Y I 1 Flgure 11s a vertlcal section ofaniromng apart of this specification, and in 'ma'chine embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a section taken on line w w of Fig. l, Fig. 3, asectiontakenon line y"y of Fig. 1, Fig. 41,,
fa -secti'on taken on line of Fig. 1, Fig. 5, I a section taken on line Q2,v of Fig. 1, Fig. 6,
a plan view 'ofan ironingtable employed in the fmachine, and Fig. 7 asection taken on lineiw+w of Fig. .1;
of construction as (illustrated in the accompanying drawings comprisesfla suitable-hollow supporting frame or pedestal ,1,'upon'which is mounted a laterally:reciprocatorysupport 2, said support being-provided with a depending rack bar3,'provid ed with afsuitable guide head islidable'in frame 1. Supporting member 2 is provided with'a'transvrse T-Slot 5 and an ironing table 6 is arrange'don top of'supporting member 2 and is provided with a cylindrical headed stud 7, operating-in slot 5' to permit" of adjustments of ironing table 6 ilboth; forwardly and backwardly-andjangularly.
1; operatlng shaft 8 arranged in a hori- 1 zontally extending armof frame 1 in opera- 'f tiverelation with rack bar?) and is provided at one end with a gear 9.: meshing with rack bar 3. r-The other end ofshaft 8 is provided with gear 10whi'ch meshes with a reciproj catoryzrack bar 11 operated by a link 11 a from'crank shaft 12, controlled by tight and .loo-se pulleys 12" in the usual manner. Shaft 12 carries a bevel gear 13 meshing with a bevel gear 14 secured to the lower end of a- Specification of Letters Patent. P t t d 19 1 7 Application filed March 3, 1913. Serial No. 751,942. V 2
such construction constituting a swiveling support for pipe 24 in shaft21 which permits of rotation of shaft 21 while pipe 2% remains stationary ,At its lower .end sha ft 21 car rles a hollow burner 29 provided in its bottom with openings 30 for escape of gas therefrom, and pipe 2 1 is provided at its upper end with any suitable flexible connection for supplying gas thereto. By this arrangement it will be observed thatthe burner 29 may be held from rotation and p'ermittedto reciprocate vertically while gas is supplied thereto for heating ironing head 22. While this constitutes a simple andefficient means such as an electricrheostat or coil may be substituted for the same purpose.
A ring 31 is mounted upon shaft .21 between two collars 32 which are secured to said shaft by means of suitable set screws "for heating the ironing head, other means Ring 31 is provided with laterally extending pins 33 engagingslots- 3 1 inthe sides of a fork.35 formed at the endof a vlever 36 mounted in framel; The other end oflever.
36 is connected by means of'a-link 37ftoa treadle lever 38 asshown. By this arrange ment itawill be observed that shaft. 21 and consequently. ironing head 22 may be readily depressed into contact with a corset or other article resting upon ironing table 6, and that the reciprocations of said ironing table and the manual adjustment thereof will permit of the ready ironing of an article on said table.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into efiect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I,
therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I' claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An ironing machine comprising a hol- 10W pedestal; a driving shaft located in the lower portion of said pedestal; a vertically reciprocatory rack bar in said operative connection between sa1d shaft and rack bar; a shaft and two gears thereon, one 'of said gears meshing with said rack; a reciprocatory support and a rack bar thereon meshing with said other gear; and an ironing member above and cooperating with said support, substantially as described.
2. An ironing machine comprising a hollow pedestal; a driving shaft located in the lower portion of said pedestal; a vertical shaft in said pedestal having a bevel gear connection with said shaft; a horizontal shaft having a bevel gear connection with said vertical shaft; a rotating ironing member having a bevel gear connection with said horizontal shaft; a reciprocatory table cooperating with said ironingmember; and an operative connection between said table and said driving shaft, substantially as described.
3. An ironing machine comprising a frame; a laterally reciprocatory support mounted in said frame and carrying a rack bar; a manually movable ironing table mounted upon the top of said support; an
, operating shaft in said frame in operative 7 relation with said rack bar; a gear on said shaft meshing with said rack bar; a second gear on said shaft; a reciprocatory rack bar meshing'with said second gear; a vertically reciprocatory rotating ironing member ar-' ranged over said ironing table ;'and means forheating said ironing member, substantially as described. v
4. An ironing machine comprising a frame; a laterally reciprocatory support mounted in said frame andcarrying a de pending rack bar; a-manually movable lroning table mounted upon the top'of said sup-v port; an operating shaft in said frame in copies of this patent may be'obtained for edestal; an
gear; a vertically reciprocatory hollow shaft arranged over said ironing table; a hollow ironing member secured to the lower end of said hollow shaft; means for rotating said hollow shaft; means for reciprocating said hollow shaft vertically; a vertically reciprocatory gas supply pipe in said hollow shaft; and a burner at the lower end of said pipe for heating said ironing member, substantially as described.
5. An ironing machine comprising a frame; a laterally reciprocatory support mounted in said frame and carrying a depending rack bar; a manually movable ironing table mounted upon the top of said support, said ironing table having a T-slot and a headed stud connection with said support; an operating shaft in said frame in operative relation with said rack bar; a gear on said shaft meshingwith said rack bar; a second gear on said shaft; a reciprocating rack bar meshing with said second gear; a vertically reciprocatory hollow shaft arranged over said ironing table; a hollow ironing member secured to'the lower end of said hollow shaft; means for rotating said hollow shaft; means for reciprocating said hollow shaft vertically; a vertically reciprocatory gas supply pipe in said hollow shaft; and a burner at the lower end of said pipe for heating said ironing member, substantially as described.
- 6.'An ironing machine comprising a hol-- said table; and means in said hollow pedestal and arms for operating said table and ironing member, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
