MICHAEL J'. REILLY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IRONING-MAGHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 3, 1914.
Application filed June 19, 19-18. Serial No. 774,535.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, MICHAEL J. REILLY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ylroning-Ma chines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ironing machines and has for its object the provision of an improved machine of this character .which is of simple construction and efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a machine embodying my invention, Fig. 2, an enlarged section taken on line m-w of Fig. 1, Fig. 3, a section taken on line Q/-g/ of Fig. 4, Fig. 4, a face view of the machine shown partially in section, Fig. 5, a top plan view ofthe ironing table, and Fig. 6, a horizontal section of the machine.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the 'drawings comprises a suitable frame 1 having a reciprocatory ironing table l.2. slidably mounted thereon, said table being reciprocated by means of an oscillatory gear 3 meshing with a rack bar 4 on the bottom thereof. Gear 3l is carried by a shaft 5 which in turn carries another gear 6 meshing with a reciprocatory rack bar 7 mounted in the main standard of the f rame 1. Rack bar 7 is connected by means of a link 8 with a cr'ank 9 on the main power shaft 10 of the machine,-said power shaft being driven by tight and loose pulleys 11 and 12 as will be readily understood.
A verticallyreciprocatory tube 13 is arranged in frame over table 2 and carries an iron 14 pivoted to the lower end thereof.`
A rod 15 lis slidably mounted in tube 13, said .rod being connected by a link 16 with the rear side of iron 14, tube 13 being provided with a slot 17 to permit of said connection as shown in Fig. 4. The rod 15 is provided on one side with rack teeth 18 which are arranged opposite a slot 19 in tube 13, said slot 19 being provided to give access to a toothed-locking dog 20 as shown. Locking dog 20 is slidably mounted in a machine.
suitable guide or bearing 21 and is connected at one end with one arm 22 of a bell crank lever mounted in the frame of the machine. The other arm 23 of said bell crank is connected by a rod 24 with a pedal lever 25 which is arranged in convenient position to be operated by the operator of the A tube 26 leads to iron 14 and serves as a means for supplying gas thereto for heating the same, said iron being provided on its inside Witha suitable burner, as will be readily understood. By this arrangement, it will be observed that stop member 20 may be readily shifted into engagement with the teeth 18 and thus hold rod 15 stationary .while tube 13 is being depressed. Such movement will cause tilting of the iron 14 to present beveled nose -14 thereof to table 2, thus greatly facilitating the ironing operations.
Tube 13 is reciprocated by means of a lever 27 which is provided at its end with a fork 28 having a slot and pin connection with a collar 29 which is swiveled between collars 30 fixed to tube 13. The other end of lever 27 is connected by means of a link 31 with a pedal lever 32 by means of which the same may be operated, the lever 32 beino* similar to the lever 25.' By this arrangement, it will be observed that iron 14 may be readily depressed into contact with ironing table 2 to perform the ironing thereon.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit. of the invention. l, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invent-ion what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. 'An ironing machine comprising a table; a support mounted to reciprocate above said table; an iron pivoted to the lower end of said support; a member slidable relatively to said support; a link connecting one end of said iron and said member; and means for holdingsaid member duringdepression of said support, substantially as describe 2. An ironing machine comprising a table; a support mounted to reciprocate above said table; an iron pivoted to the lower end of said support; a member slidable relatively to said support; a link connecting one end of said iron and said member; and means for holding or releasing said member during depression of said support, substantially as described.
3. An ironing machine comprising a table; a tube mounted to reciprocate above said table; an iron pivoteci to the lower" end vof said tube; a member slidable in said tube; a link connecting one end of said iron and said member; and means for holding said member during depression of said tube, substantially as described.
4. An ironing machine comprisinga table; a tube mounted to reciprocate above said table; an ironl pivoted to the lower end of said tube; a rod slidable in said tube and provided with teeth on one side, there being a Slot in said tube giving access to said teeth; atoothed stop arranged to engage said teeth; means for moving said stop into and out of engagement with said teeth; and a link connecting one end of said iron With said rod, substantially as described.
In` testimony whereof I' have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
MICHAEL J. REILLY.
