ROLAND EVANS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-TIIIRDS TO ALFRED M. ROFINOT AND GILBERT H. HOXIE, OF SAME PLACE.
APPARATUS FOR RIPPING SEAMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,642, dated September 26, 1899.
Application filed July 2, 1898. Serial No. 685,068. (No model.)
To all whont it War/,7 concern:
Be it known that I, ROLAND EVANS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Ripping Seams, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a poweroperated mechanism for ripping the sewed seams of cloth goods or like articles.
The object of the present improvement is to provide a simple, durable, and eifective mechanism for severing the thread used in joining the seam and in which provision is made to guard the cloth from injury from the knife used in severing said thread, all as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be more particularly pointed out in the claim. I attain such object by the construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation illustrating the present invention as an attachment to an ordinary household sewing-machine; and Fig. 2, an enlarged detail horizontal section at line at, Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in both views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a stationary work-supporting table, on the upper surface of which is secured the guardpieces 2, by which the cloth is shielded from the action of the ripping-knife. Said guard or shield pieces are made adjustable to and from the ripping-knife in oblique and lateral directions by means of set-screws 3 passing through elongated slots 4 in the attachingbases of said guard-pieces and screwing into the table-top, saidslots having an oblique arrangement with relation to the sides of the ripping-knife and extending in opposite directions, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
5 is the ripping-knife, passing through a suitable opening in the table 1 and in a ver tical manner between the guard-pieces 2, as shown.
6 is a slideway on the frame of the appliance, in which the carrier 7 of the knife is guided in its vertical reciprocation.
Sis a set-screw by which the knife is detachably secu red in its carrier '7.
9 is a pitman connecting the lower end of the carrier 7 with the crank-pin 10 of a crank or disk carried by the rotary operating-shaft 11 of the apparatus.
In the preferredtype of my present apparatus, as illustrated in the drawings and in which the invention is shown as an attachment to a household sewingmachine, the supporting frame 12 of the apparatus is adapted to have a pivotal attachment to the arm 13 of the sewing-machine and in the perforated lug 14 thereon, to which the threadwinder is usually attached. In the construction shown the rotary driving-shaft 12 is provided with an elastic-faced driving-pulley 15, adapted to contact with and be driven by the hand or fly wheel 16 of the sewing-machine.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an apparatus for ripping cloth-seams, the combination of a table, a reciprocating knife, means for reciprocating the same, guardpieces arranged at opposite sides of the knife and adapted to be adj usted in relation thereto, in oblique directions, and means for securing the guard-pieces at the required adjustment, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof witness my hand this 29th day of June, 1898.
ROLAND EVANS.
In presence of RoBERr BURNS, ALFRED 1W1. ROFINOT.
