BURNIsHme-moor..
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be 'it known that I, IRVIN A. SCRIBNER,
citizen of the United States of America, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have in-l vented certain new and useful Improvements in Burnishing-Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a burnishing tool particularly adapted for use in transferring engravings although it may be used for other purposes when desired, such for instance, as for restoring the gloss to paper which has been roughened by erasures and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved toolv of this character whichi parts in all of the figures of the drawing.
Referring ,to the drawing, the numeral 5 designates a tubular body carrying a head 6, that is provided with a rounded upper face 7, adaptingthis portion of the tool to be likewise used for burnishing or transferring,'wl1en desired. The head may be made in one piece with the tube, or it may be separately formed and provided witha plug 8. soldered or otherwise secured 'in the tube. The lower end of the'tube 5, is spun inwardly at 9, to cause it to retain a ball l0, so that the ball is capable of rotation in the lower end of the tube. This ball is held against movement into the tube by a curved plate ll, which plate in turn is held in place by a filling 12. This filling may be put in place as a plastic material which l a tterward hardens.
In the modified form of the device, illustra ted in Fig. 3, the tube 5a is provided with the filling 12a which retains in. position a plate 11a and the ball 14, is disposed' 1n the Specification of Letters Patent.

mouth of the tube and is held in place by ball 13. The lower end of the tube is spun inward-ly at 9, to prevent thev movement of ball 1,4 out of the tube.
In use, balls 10 or 14 are rubbed over the sheet, the impression upon which is to be transferred. The rolling of the ball per# mits such action without danger of tearing the sheet. It is of course, apparent that the smaller the surface actually contacting with the sheet, the more effective will be the pressure at that particular point, however,
if it were attempted to use anything in thel nature of a pointed burnisher, the sheet would certainly be torn, but by making the contacting member'a rotative one it is possible to use Lthis relatively small contact surface and still secure the desired results.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that simple and etlicient means are herein provided for accomplishing the objects of the invention, Abut while the elements shown and described are well adapted to serve'the purposes for which they are intended, it is to be understood that. the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but includes 'within its purview such changes as may be made Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
A device of theclfi'aracter described com- .p prisina,` a tubulfz'rf body portion, a. ball mounted in the lower end thereof with a portion of its perilihery projecting from said body portion, said -tube being partially spun over said ball to retain said ball, a
plate comprising a section or' a hollow sphere seated in said tubular body portion and backing up said ball, a cap closing the upper endof said tubular body portion and a body of filling material of such a nature that it is plastic when placed in position and afterward hardens, said filling material completely filling the space between said plate and said cap to thereby hold said cap in engagement with said. ball.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in ,presence of two witnesses.
` IRVIN A. SCRIBNER.
