M: m H m INVENTOR ATTORNEY ,UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
,sx'LvANIA. a
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIDNEY *W. 'FARNS- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vapor-Rectifiers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates'to containing receptacles adapted to maintain a high degree of vacuum, and more particularly to containers of the type indicated and adapted to operate as vapor arc rectifiers.
One object/of my invention is to provide means for causing the wall of a containing receptacle to be absolutely impervious to the passage of gas or vapor.
' Anothe'r object of my invention is to provide closing means for a containing receptacle which may be readily applied and removed and which, when applied, will make an absolutely gas-tight closure.
Prior to my invention, it has been a common'practice to construct the containing receptacles of mercury arcrrectifiers of some a It has been suitable metal, such as steel. found in practice that steel-is apt to contain extremely minute pores through which small amounts of air or other gas may leak into the evacuated interior of the contain- .ing receptacle. Furthermore, under certain conditions of high vacuum and high temperature, the steel itself appears to be sufficiently porous to admit minute quantities of gas to the interior of the containing receptacle. I avoid the above noted disadvantages by coating one surface, preferably the outer-one, of containing receptacle with some fuse vitreous enamel, which I findeffectively seals all pores in the metal and causes the wall of the containing receptacle to become absolutely gas-tight.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a view, partially in elevation and partially in section,-of one embodiment of enamel coating 2. Iheupper rim of'th e" varying-neonates.

slDNEY w.-FARNSWORfI}H,, OF mrrsnuaen, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR pro WESTING- nousncnnnctmlownnnManurnccfifiitind coMPnnY, A CORBORATION or rum ground to a flat surface, as'shown at 3,and
a cover member 4 is provided to, so bear upon the surface 3 as to make an extremely close mechanical joints A flange member 5 is them, is a sealing pool of mercury 9 covering the flat joint between the member 1 and the member 4 and rendering it gas-tight. In order that the cover member 4 may be maintained firmly in place, a peripheralring 10 is provided to bear firmly thereupon in close proximity to the joint of member 1 and extending out over the sealing means, as shown at 11. Suitable threaded means 12 are provided for drawing the member 10 toward the flange member 5, thus providing a contact clamping means to hold the cover firmly in place. Current is supplied to the rectifier by any suitable means, such, for example, as an anode lead 13, and is conducted from the cathode pool 14 through the'wall of the container 11 and the flangeoto awi-re 15.. i

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: I
1. A container for vapor .electric apparatus comprising a bowl-shaped receptacle provided .uith a peripheral flange a short distance from the rim, a cover, for the re ceptacle, clamping means engaging said flange and securing the cover in place, and retaining rings carried by the cover and the flange, respectively, and serving to maintain a pool of sealing liquid over the joint be tween the receptacle and the cover.-
2. A container forXapor electric apparratus comprising a bowl-shaped receptacle provided with a peripheral flange a short distance from .the rim, :1 cover for the receptacle, clamping means engaging said flange and securing the cover in. place, and retaining rings carriedby the cover andthe flange, respectively, and serving to maintain a sealing pool of liquid over the joint between the receptacle and the cover, said clamping means bridging over theseaiing means.
3. A container for vapor electric apparatus comprising'a bowl-shaped receptacle provided with. a peripheral flan e a short "distance -from the rim, a cover or'theref6 bowI-sha'ped' containing receptacle .1 is ceptacle, sealing means for the joint between the receptacle and the cover;j a ring'shaped member resting upon the outer surface of .flmeans, v
(flange and said ring'shaped member tothe coveriand extending out over the sealing said means tending todraw said gether.
,4'. A container for vapor electric appa- 'ratus comprising a bowl-shaped receptacle rovided with a. peripheral flange a, short istancefrom the rim;
and the cover, a ring shaped a. cover for the re-' 1 --cepta'cle, sealing means\ for the'joint between the receptacle member resting upon the outer surface of the cover and extending out over the sealin I means, and threaded members engaging sai flange and said ring member and tending to draw them together.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 24th day of March SIDNEY W. FARNSWORTH. Witnesses:
