To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. H. Scnnonnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Pedro, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gap Construction, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hats, caps, head coverings and the like, and pertains especially to head coverings provided with an eye shield attachment.

It is an object of this invention to provide a head covering to wiichggoggles are adjustably secured whereby the goggles may be positioned to protect the eyes of the wearer or may be disposed out of sight when not in use.

It is another object of this invention to provide a head covering with a chamber for receiving goggles when not in use and a means of securing the goggles to the head covering which is disposed in the chamber and will permit the goggles to be withdrawn for wear and will support them in any position convenient to the wearer.

I attain these objects by means of the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cap. Fig. 2 is an elevation with parts broken away to show the position of the goggles when retracted. Fig. 3 is an elevation with parts broken away to show the goggles supporting means and goggles when in pos1- tion for protecting the eyes. Fig. 1 is a plan view looking at the inside of the hat.

More specifically, my cap consists of a crown 5 having a head encircling band 6, and the usual top covering member 7 which may be a piece of fabric or other material integral with the member 6 or a separate piece secured by stitching or any other means well known in the construction of hats or caps. The character of the hat or cap material is not a feature of my invention.

Secured to the head encircling member 6 is a peak 8 of some stiff material such as cardboard, leather, celluloid or any other material desirable andusual in cap constructions. band, forming therewith an opening which is adapted to fit the head of the wearer. The band 9 is preferably removably secured to the head encircling band 6 by means of snap clasps 10 and 11. Secured to the band 9 are reels 12 which may be of any well known type comprising a drum and mechanism which will wind upon the drum a flexible member such as a cord or chain, and which will permit the flexible member to be maintained in any given position. These reels are of the type commonly used for eye glass, chains or cords. I have shown chains 13 which are wound upon the reels and secured to the ends of the chains is an automobile goggle l l. The particular type of goggle is not a material part of my invention and may consist as shown of a band of flexible material to which are secured transparent windows or lenses formed of a material, such as isinglass, mica, celluloid or glass. Secured to the ends of the automobile goggle 141 and serving a function similar to the bows of eye glasses are elastic or resilient members 15 which are attached to the crown of the cap within the chamber 16 formed in the crown. I have shown a snap clasp or button 17 for securing the end of the member 15 to the crown.

The cap when worn with the goggles in the position shown in Fig. 2 has the appear ance of an ordinary cap. When it is desired to wear the goggles they are pulled down out of the chamber 16, the chains 13 unwinding from the reels 12. l/Vhen the goggles have been positioned where it is convenient for wear, the locking mechanism in the reel is allowed to operate, whereupon the goggles are supported by the chains 13, the resilient members 15 holding the goggles against the head of the wearer. When it is desired to retract the goggles they are given a quick pull downward, thus releasing the locking arrangement of the reel and allowing the reel to wind chains 13 upon their drums and thereby pull the goggles up into the chamber 16.

lVhat I claim is:

1. In a head covering construction, the combination of a crown including a wall encircling the head, a second wall secured to said first mentioned wall and forming therewith a chamber open at the bottom, goggles, and an adjustable flexible supporting means secured to said crown disposed Wholly in said chamber for supporting said goggles.

2.
