INGEMAR RYsTED'T', OF DAYTON, OHIO.
CLEANEB'FOR TOOTHED IMPLEMENTS.
Application filed January 15, 1915. Serial No. 2,457.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, INGEMAR l tr s'rnn'r, a citizen of the United States, resldmg at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery a'nd The present invention relates to a cleaning device for toothed implements.
"In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a cleaner for toothed implements, such as combs, rakes, forks or the like which will act upon both the sides provement, Fig. 2 is a similar view illus-- and ends of the teeth to remove all foreign matter therefrom.
- It is also my purpose to provide a device of.th'is character which may be readily applied to toothed implements of the ordinary construction and which shall embody the desirable features of simplicity in construc tion,'cheapness in manufacture and thoroughly eflicient for the purpose desired.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspec-"i tive view-of a comb providedwith my imtrating the arrangement of parts when the .teeth of the comb are operated upon by the Y device for cleaning the same, Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, the same. being greatly enlarged, Fig. 4 is a similar view approximately on the line H of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view approximately on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2, Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the toothed scraping members.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, in which similar characters indicate like parts throughout, the numeral 1 designates an ordinary hair comb. The end teeth 2 and 3 are of a greater width than the intermediate teeth and the said end tooth 2 is provided upon its outer edge with a notch 4. The opposite sides of what may be termed the body of the comb are preferably centrally formed with a longitudinally extending depression providing a finger hole 5.
The improved cleaner includes a pair of plates 6 and 7, said plates beingarranged upon opposite sides of the comb 1. If desired, the plates may be connected at one of their ends, thus providing a substantially U-shaped element, but the said plates terminate a slight but suitable distance inward ofthe end of the comb provided with Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1916.
the widened tooth 2, while the opposite ends of the plates, are connected through the medium of'a removable element, preferably ""in the nature of a screw 8, the said screw clined edges 10 of the series of teeth of the comb.
Hingedly secured, as at-ll, to the connected ends of the plates 6 and 7, is a cap or closure 12, the same comprising a cross sectionally U-shaped or channel member and has its free end provided with an angularly extending portion 13, the outer wall of which terminates in a spring tooth 14, and the said tooth is adapted to engage with the notch 4 in'the tooth 2 when the said cap is swung over what may be termed the outer edge of the body of the comb and the inner edges of the angular extension 13 contacts with the ends of the plates 6 and when the cap is in its closed position.
The end tooth'2 is provided withva slot I 15, the same being arranged at an angle or curved to correspond with the angular or.
rved edges 16 of the seriesof teeth of t e comb located away from the said slot.
The plates 6 and 7 may be provided with depressions forming finger holds 17 and are provided with inwardly projecting studs or rivets 18 which are received withinlongitudinally arranged slots 19 provided in the side members 20 and 21 of the cleaning or scraping elements for the inner edges 10 and 16 of the series of teeth. The-members 20 and 21 have their edges-provided with a plurality of laterally disposed scraping members 22 and 23 respectively, the scraping members 22 engaging with the edges 16 of the teeth of the comb, while the cutting members 23 engage with the edges 10 of said teeth. The cutting members 22 and 23 are preferably in the nature of flat resilient elements having chisel-shaped engaging edges, and the same may be connected with the members 20 and 21 in any desired or preferred manner or the said cutting members may be formed integral with the said,
tooth 2 and serves tor sustaining the said plate upon the comb. In this connection, however, it should be stated that the members 18 are in the nature of headed elements, so that the members 20 and 21 are slidably but securely connected with the plates 6 and 7.
The outer edges of the teeth 2 and 8 are beveled or curved to correspond with the bevel or curvature of the edges 10 and 16 of the inner series of teeth. The plates 20 and 21 are permitted a limited sliding movement in a longitudinal direction on the comb and when the cleaner is operated the scraping members 22 and .23 will be also moved longitudinally to contact with the edges 10 and 16 of the inner series of teeth as well as with the inner edges of the end teeth 2 and 3,
while the side plates will engage with the opposite sides of the comb so that foreign matter between-the teeth or against the sides of the teeth will be removed. It is, of course, to be understood that the member 12 is swung to the position illustrated in Fig. 2 before the device can be operated. It is to be further noted that the, slots or openings 9 and 15 respectively,
serve as stops to limit the outward movement of the cleaning device.
From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled'in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, I claim is: p
1. In combination, a toothed member having tapered teeth, the two end teeth thereof each being enlarged and provided with a curved slot, each slot being curved similar to the curve of the side of the several teeth of the comb located away from said slot, and a cleaner member movable longitudinally of the comb teeth comprising two cleaning elements, a pivot member for each of the cleaning members arranged one in the curved slot of each of the end teeth and the said cleaner members adapted to be moved longi' tudinally of said comb teeth by virtue of such pivot engagement what engaged by the mem-v bers 8 and 24 respectively,
- said slot,
with the slots of the end teeth, whereby the cleaning elements may be guided along and to contact closely the whole length of the comb teeth.
2. lhe combination with a toothed member having tapering teeth, thereof each being enlarged and provided with a curved slot, each slot being curved similar to the curve of the sides of the several teeth of the comb located away from said slot, and a cleaner member movable longitudinally of the comb teeth comprising each two spaced plates arranged upon the opposite faces of the comb, the plates of one of the members disposed in contact with the outer sides of the plates of the other mem-. ber, pivots compressing the side members of the cleaners passing through the curved slots in the end teeth, cleaners including elements in contact therewith and adapted by virtue of the pivots arranged in the slots er the end teeth to be guided along closel the whole length of the tapered teeth.
3. n combination with a toothed member having tapering teeth, the end teeth being widened and provided with slots which are curved similar to the curve of the side'oii the several teeth of the comb located away from a cleaner member comprising two longitudinally movable elements arrange upon the opposite sides of the comb,'a bindarranged between the teeth of the comb and ing element for the sides of the cleaner members comprising a guide pin arranged in the curved slots of the end teeth, whereby the cleaner members by virtue of the said en gagement contact with the teeth throughout the entire length of said teeth, transverse elements carried by the said cleaner members engaging with the opposite edges of the teeth of the comb, one of the widened end teeth having a notch, a cap connected with one of the elements of the cleaner member, a spring tooth for the cap,v and said tooth. adapted to engage in the notch of the mentioned end tooth to lock the cleaner on the comb.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
INGEMAR RYSTEDT,
Witnesses:
M. 8. Reno, FRANK Haas.
