To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY V. WrLKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Natchez, in the county of Adams and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Broom-Head, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to broom heads and more particularly to a holder designed to receive the broom straw and to securely clamp it in position, said straw being readily removable whenever desired so that new straw can be substituted thereby.

A further object is to rovide a holder which is light, simple, and durable in construction and which will operate to effectually clamp upon the straw.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.

In said drawings: Figure ,1 is a perspective view of a broom head embodying the present improvements. Fig. 2 is an en larged section therethrough on line :rx, Fig. 1, the clamping portion thereof being shown open.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a metallic hood shaped to conform with the contour of an ordinary broom head, said hood having a tubular stem 2 extending from the crown thereof and in which a handle 3 is designed to be permanentlyfastened in any suitable manner. One face of the hood is cut away as indicated at 4, the other face thereof being reinforced by a cross strip 5 the ends of which lap the sides of the hood as indicated at 6. This strip may be secured to the hood in any preferred manner. Heads 7 are located between. the strip 5 and the adjoining face of the hood and have stems 8 extending therefrom through the hood and toward the open side of the hood. Each stem is provided with an elongated head 9 wedgeshaped in cross section and constituting a button for the purpose hereinafter set forth.

A clamping plate 10 is extended across the open face of the hood and has side flanges 11 designed to lap the sides of the hood, each flange being provided at one end with an ear 12 which is pivotally connected to the hood as shown at 13. The clamping platehas a reinforcing strip 14 extending across its outer face and this strip as well as the plate has slots 15 therein extending in the direction of the length of the broom head. The slots are so proportioned that when the clamping plate is swung into closed position, the heads or buttons 9 are free to extend therethrough and when these buttons are turned'they will lock the clamping plate and revent it from swin ing into open position. 11 order that the dlamping action of the plate may be increased in proportion to the rotation of the buttons cam faces 16 are preferably located adjacent the slots 15,

these faces being formed preferably by striking them outward from the strip 14.

When it is desired to secure an ordinary broom head within the device the clamping plate 10 is swung into open position as indicated in Fig. 2 and the buttons 9 are turned so as to extend longitudinally of the head.. The straws are then inserted into the hood 1 and the buttons 9 forced through them. This operation is facilitated by reason of the wedge shape of thebuttons. The clamping plate 10 is then swung against the straws which have been indicated at A and the buttons 9 are therefore projected through slots 15. 'By turnin the buttons 9 the plate 10 will be secure y fastened. and if the cam faces are provided the plate 10 will be forced inward against the straws and clamp them in proportion to the turning movement of the buttons. To remove the straws it is merely necessary to reverse the foregoing operation.

What is claimed is:
