application-'flied treinreis.:sriainmaaaeil 4 To all whom/15 mag/concern.
1 Be it known that l, Maman J. RYAN', a .citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and state of New York, have invented newand useful Improvements in Sash-Locks, or' which the following is a specification.' This invention relates to sash locks and it consists in the novel features hereinafter ,described and claimed.
.fa' lock'of the character indicated adapted-to 5 .hej appliedjto the siderails of lower and upper'sashes and having partsadapted to vloe connected with eachother ina manner tof securely hold the sashes in.v xed position with relation to each other and therebypre- A. vent the sashes from being opened or moved .even under the influence of a jimmy. or other powerful prying tool.
With the above objects 'in View the sash lock includesa plate which is applied to the .side of the upper sash and which is provided with a yseries of internally threaded pockets which are embedded in the rail of the sash..
The lock also includes a member which is Aapplied'to the upper end of theside rail of the lower sash. and whichI is provided with an opening through which a bolt mayl be in of its body'portio'n with a dependingflange serted, the said bolt `.having a threaded end the said pockets. The member which is applied to the lower sash is provided at its outer end with 'a plate which extends along the outer surface of the side rail of the sash and securing devices pass through the said plate 'and coopera-te with securing devices which pass through the upper portion of the said member and enter the side rail holding the bolt, or bolts, when the same are of the sash and serve as means ,for
y not inuse, as means for connecting theparlts of the 'lock' together.A I
,In the accompanying drawing :-"-F1gure 1 is a. slde elevation: ofpo'rti'ons of window sash -with'thelock'applied. Fig."2 is an 'enlargedsectional view 'of' the same. 3 isa top plan view' ofthe member 'oftheflock which' is applied tothe lower sash.' Fig. `4 is a plan vview of the boltV which is apart of the lock. k I 'r I 1'- As illustrated in the accompanying! drawving the sashv lock inchides a plate 1 adapted to' ybe 'applied tothe side; rail of the upper s'ash and having internally threaded :pockets 2 which vare'embeddedl in 'the said side rail. The' 'said plate l'may be secured by screws 3 .or other suitable securing devices f- A member 4v is positioned upon the upper edge "of the lower sash at the' upper 'endo' be passedforholding the 'member in proper position'u'pon the'sash.` f A barrel portion 6 is provided upon. the member 4 and they said barrelis open from end 4to end. The barrel 6 is V'disposed transversely `across the 'lower sash whenl the member '4 isapplied thereto. The member 4 is provided at theouter edge Z'wliich eXtendsalongthe face, or side/"of the lower sash, and a screw 8, or otherjsuitable securing device, passes transversely through the plate 7 and enters the sidera'il v ofthe sash. The screw 8ser'v`es'in combina# tion with the devices which pass through the opening side as meansforeectually hold-y ing the member 4 in position upon the sash. Spaced lugs 9 extend outwardly from the plate 7 and are provided with openings 10. rll`he saidflanges may be further provided with. openings 11. A bolt 12 is adapted to be passed through the barrel 6 'and the said bolt is provided at one end with a thread 13 which is adapted to engage the thread in any one of the pockets 2. The bolt 12 :is provided at its outer end with a head 14 having an opening 15, A pin 16 is insertible through the opening 15 andthe openings 1() in the lugs 9 and when in position as shown in Fig. 2 of the'drawing, serves as means for holding the bolt 12 against turning movement. The lower sash may be provided with a bore 17 which at its outer end communicates with an opening 18 provided in the plate 7 and the said bore and opening may receive a bolt similar to the bolt 12 and the thread be engaged with the thread of any one of the pockets 2, consequently two -or more bolts may be used in conjunction with the other parts of the lock vas desired.
The parts of the lock are secured together in the following manner.: Assuming that the upper and lower sash have been adjusted to such positions in the frame as'are desired, and when a single bolt 12 is used the said bolt is passed through the barrel 6 and is rotated therein so that its threaded end 13 engages in the thread of one of the pockets 2. When the bolt has been moved in an inward direction to such an extent thatvits head 14 is in contact with the outer end of the barrel, or approximately so, the opening 15 in the head is brought into vertical register or alinement with the'openings 10 in the lugs 9. The pin 16 is then inserted down through the said openings andthe bolt 12 is held vagainst turning movement.l quently the parts of the lock are securely and e'ective'ly held together. that a second bolt is used, it is passed through the bore -16 and engaged with the pocket of thevplate 1 as above described and tle plin 16 is passed through the opening 1 5 o t e with the other parts of the lock 4,and it is rei moved from theV barrel, it maybe inserted through the openings 11 in thelugs 9 and of the last mentioned bolt may Conse-y `In the event head of. the second mentioned bo1t. Thus, a single pin may be 'employed for.
thus the said bolt is retained` at the lock structure and is ready at hand for application when desired.
From the above description taken in conjunctionwith the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that a sash lock of simple and durablestructure is provided and that when the parts of the loc-k are secured together, the sashes are eifectu ally held against movement with relation to each other and the presence of the securing devices through the platev 7 of the member 4. will hold the sash in position against the prying action. of a jimmy or other tool, inasmuch as it is necessary to shear the heads of the securing devices from the bodies thereof, or break the said devices in order to ettectl a separation of the lower sash from the said plate 7.
Having described the invention what is claimed is z A sash lock comprising a plate having at A one side pockets which-are embedded in one sash, another plate having a barrel resting on the top of the other sash and provided with a depending flange which extends along the side of the sash and disposed at a right angle to said barrel, securing devices passing thro-ugh the flange and entering the sash at the side'thereof, a bolt extending through the barrel and having a threaded end adapted to engage the thread of one of the pockets, said bolt having an enlarged head adapted to engage the flange whereby the sashes may be drawn together, there being provided upon the said 'flange an voutstanding lug, said lug' and the bolt having openings ,and akey insertible through the openingsrof the bolt and the lug to hold the bolt in locked position.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses. l MARTIN J. RYAN.
