Description

J. N. ROBE RSON. SAFETY HANDHOLD; APPLICATION FILED DEC- 23, I913.
' 1, 170,336. Patented Feb. 1, 1916.
\iliill Ill) JAMES N. nornnson, or WADLEY, GEORGIA.
SAFETY-HANDHOLD.
Application filed December 23, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES N. RoBnRsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVadley, in the county of J efierson and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Handholds;
V and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for railway cars, and has for its principal object to provide a safety hand grip which is adapted for use by passengers in steadying themselves.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which will be particularly useful in event of a wreck or other accident wherein the car is apt to become derailed and to fall or turn over.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device by means of which a passenger may rest his arm during a more or less lengthy trip.
\Vith the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure 1 is a side view of the 1nter1or of a'fragment of a railway car showing the attachment in place, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of a railway car similar to Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety a railway car which has the seats 2 secured therein at spaced intervals. The usual window openings 3 are provided immediately adjacent each seat and said Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1916.
Serial No. 808,450.
' openings are separated by the usual panels 4:. My improved attachment which is designated by the numeral 5 is essentially a U- shaped member, the arms of which are bent inwardly as at '6 andv folded or otherwise secured to the panels in such a way that the lower end of the grip member 5 is substantially on the same level as the back of the seat as clearly shown in the drawings.
It will be clearly seen from the foregoing that the user when he anticipates any danger, seizes one of the grab handles as illustrated in Fig. l and should the car turn over, it will be evident, a fall will be eliminated and much danger of injury removed.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fallwithin the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
The combination with a closed car having spaced transverse seats therein, of vertically disposed grab handles rigidly secured to the side wall of the car at approximately the center of the spaces between the seats so as to extendforwardly of the seats when the same are turned in either direction, said handles being mounted independently of the seats and being arranged within easy reach of the occupants thereof to steady them while the occupants are entering and leaving the seats. v I
In testimony whe'reofI affix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
JAMES N. ROBERSON.
