III/11111111111111!Ill/1114 06. Madam Eff/(Ideal,
I 5y y YIIIIIII/IIII/I/IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII UNITED STATES Patented February 28, 1905.
WILLIAM P. MICHEL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STREET-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 783,449, dated February 28, 1905.
Application filed August 1'7, 1904. Serial No. 220,999-
To all whont it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. IVIICHEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, (Manhattan,) county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Street-(Jars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement upon Letters Patent No. 744,780, granted to me November 24, 1903. That patent describes an open car in which the handles are placed forward of each seat at the side where the passengers dismount in lieu of being placed opposite the ends of each seat. In this way a passenger on leaving the car is not apt to swing ofi' facing rearward and accidents are prevented; but by removing the handles from the ends of the seat the latter is left unprotected; and the object of the present invention is to so guard such ends as to prevent passengers, and especially children, from falling by slipping sidewise ofi the seat.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal section through part of a car embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof with the posts, arms, and brackets at the opposite side omitted; Fig. 3, a section on line 3 3, Fig. 1, showing such posts, arms, and brackets at the opposite side. Fig. 4 is a detail of the bracket; and Fig. 5, a view similar to Fig. 3, showing the backs of the seats reversed.
The letter A represents an open street-car provided with'the usual transverse rows of seats or benches a. At diagonally opposite corners of each bench at is arranged a post 6, carrying handle 6, such post and handle being thus placed in front of the bench next back at the right or egress side of the car, all as described in Patent No. 7 44,7 80, hereinbefore referred to. From each of the two posts 6 pertaining to each bench projects an arm 0, such arms extending in opposite directions from the posts toward the center of the seat. The
back d of the bench is provided at its ends with a pair of brackets d, that extend both in the same direction, Figs. 1 and 2, and are tween the bracket proper and the seat a, Fig.
2. In other words, the guard (i extends from the pivot 0Z first downwardly to the seat a, thence backwardly along the seat, and thence upwardly to the main body of the bracket d. At the top an arm-rest d extends from the pivot d to the main body of the bracket. Thus it will be seen that the top and bottom of the bracket are of different construction and that while the top forms a convenient armrest the bottom forms a guard that protects the seat in such a manner that the passengers cannot be jolted off the same. The brackets cl at the left side of the car, which is closed by the usual horiZontally-slidable rail 0, are provided with their guards 0Z on top in lieu of at the bottom, Fig. 3. Thus when the backs are swung around and the travel of the car is reversed these upper guards will be swung down to assume their proper position below the brackets d at the open side of the car, Fig. 5.
What I claim is- In a car, the combination with a transverse bench having a post at diagonal opposite corners, and an arm secured to each post and extending in opposite directions toward the center of the bench, of a swinging back for the bench having a bracket secured to each end thereof and pivoted to the end of each arm, a guard on each bracket, the guard of one bracket being disposed between the pivot and the bench, and the guard of the other bracket extending in an opposite direction above the pivot, substantially as specified.
Signed by me at New York city, (Manhattan,) New York, this 15th day of August, 1904.
- WILLIAM P. MICHEL.
