Be it known that 1, h/[AHLON D. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, and 'a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and mp'roved Dispensing Sugar- Bowl, of which the following is a full, clear, and exa-ct description.

Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a bowl of the character mentioned with means for preventing the admission of insects, dust or other foreign matter thereto; to provide a dispensing apparatus, simple in construction., readily cleaned, and easily attached to the body or containing receptacle of said bowl; and to reduce the cost of manufacture.'

Drawings- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a bowl of the character mentioned, kconstructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, showing the bowl in its upright or inactive position; Fig. 2 is a similar section, showing the bowl in its inverted or active position.

Description-As seen in the accompanying drawings, the body portion 7 is preferably constructed from glass, and is provided at one end thereof with a neck 8 having formed on the inner side thereof a screw-thread, with which the threaded end 9 of a spout 10 registers. The spout 10 may be constructed from any suitable material,

ya non-corrosive metal being preferred. At

the end of the spout 10 opposite the screwthread said spout is provided with a flange or lip 11 to fit and serve as a guide for the neck portion 12 of a cap 13. The cap 13 is preferably constructed from glass, and is provided with a pouring opening 14 at the upper end thereof, and, as above mentioned, with the neck portion 12, said portion forming-preferably a straight, cylindrical body. The cap 13 is freely movable on the spout 10, and is prevented from escaping therefrom when the bowl is inverted, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, by a cross arm 15, which is rigidly mounted on a stem 16, said stem being Xedly attached to the spout 10.

'The upper portion of the cap 13 is enlarged,

as shown in the drawings, the body of the enlarged portion being greater in diameter than the neck portion 12. Then assembling the spout 10 and parts connected therewith and the cap 13, the same is effected by forcing the neck portion l2 down over the cross arm 15, which is thereby contracted to ypass within the smaller diameter of the neck portion 12, to expand when within the larger chamber of the cap 13 above said neck portion 12, as lshown in the drawings. Thereafter, the arm 15 serves, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, to support the cap 13 when in the inverted position. The spout 10 is provided vabout midway the length thereof, with a series of projecting points 17'.H The pointsl? engage the side of the portion 12,' and operate in conjunction with the lip 11 on the spout 10 to guide and maintain the cap 13 concentric with the "spout 10 and the stem 16 therein. Said cap, being thus guided in its operation, is in position to seat whenever placed in an upright position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings,

upon the stationary valve 18. The valve 18, as shown in the drawings, passes into and completely closes the pouring opening 14, and also supports the weight of the cap 13, thereby effectually closing and` sealing said opening.

Operatz'oaf-VVhen it is desired to take a supply of sugar or other similar material from the bowl, the same is inverted, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The cap 13, operating by gravity, drops to the position where it is supported by the arm 15 and stem 16. The pouring opening 14C being now unobstructed, the quantity of sugarl desired may be drawn. When this quantity has been extracted from the bowl, said bowl is raised to an upright position, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, when the cap 13, again acting by gravity, drops upon and is thereafter supported by the valve 18. It will be noted that to secure the complete closure of the opening 14 the neck portion 12 is slightly shortened, so that the lower edge of the same does not quite reach the upperedge of the neck 8 of the body portion The separation of the neck portion 12 from the neck 8 is, however, so slight asto prevent access of any insect to the inner side of the neck 8. This arrangement is not essential, as, should an insect obtain admittance to the space between the spout 10 and the neck portion 12, it could not gain admittance to the body portion 7. r1`he result, however, of such a presence on the bowl would be disagreeable, therefore provision is-made against the possibility. Whenever it is desired to remove the cap 13, so that it may be washed, any suitable instrument is inserted through the opening 14 to engage the arm 15 to compress `the same until the ends thereof pass intol the neck portion 12.

In this position the cap 13 may be Withdrawn from the spout 10 and properly cleansed. At the same time, the spout 10',

if desired, may be cleaned.

While I have herein described the invenf tion as applied to sugar bowls, and as employedl in dispensing sugar, it Willi be understood that it may be used as' af container for a variety of materials. It is obvious that the bowl serves to pec'l'l-lia-r advantage Whenholding deliquescent materia-ls, such as sal-t, sugar er soda.

Claims:

1. A bowl as characterized, comprising a body portion; an openeended capA having a contracted pouring opening; means mounted on said body portion, extending Within said capi, for closing the pouring openiiig therein; a spout removably mounted in the delivery end of said body portion, said spout having guiding projections extending from the sides thereof4 to slidably engage' and at all times maintain the alinement of said cap; and a eontractible arm supported from' said spout andiextending Within said cap to limit the movement thereof.

2. A bowl as characterized, comprising a body portion having a screw-threaded pouringY opening; ay screw-threaded spout mounted therein; a cap slidaloly mounted in surrounding` relation to said spout, said Cap being provided with a pouring opening; a valve disposed Within said cap' for closing the pouring, opening thereot;l a stem mounted in said spout for supporting said va ve; and a eontractibl'e arm mounted in said cap 'for limiting the movement thereof when inverted! to remove the pouring opening thereof :from said valve.
