' BUTTON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1916.
Application filed July 19, 1915. Serial No. 40,545.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, VINCENT PRICE, of New York, New York county, New York State, and JosnfiH H. SANDERSON, of Baby: lon, Suffolk county, New York State, both citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Button, of which, the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved button which maybe used effectively in various connections, but perhaps more especially in connection with hose supporters of the so-called button and loop typefin which connection, it is shown and described herein.
The object is to provide a simple, effective and durable button which may be economically manufactured.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view, relatively enlarged, of part of a hose supporter provided with the new button construction. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof, partly broken away, and showing the parts in a different position. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, the loop end being omitted, Fig. 4 is an edge elevation of the button, and its supporting tape. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a detail. Fig. 6 is a view of the blank from which the base is formed. Fig. 7 is a front elevation of a modification.
1 represents a hose supporter loop of the conventional type having the usual so-called key-hole slot therein.
2 represents the lower part of a supporting tape of a hose supporter.
3 is what is termed the button supporting tab. The button proper is provided .with a yielding head and preferably a yielding shank, and a relatively rigid or non-yielding base.
4 represents the button head, and 5 represents the base. The button head is preferably made of felt or other suitable relatively yielding, clinging material. The base 5 is provided with two offset oppositely. arranged clamping members 66, WhlOll are preferably recessed at their ends as shown in Fig. 6.
7 is a core piece which, in its preferred form, is approximately of I-beam section, as shown.
In forming the button, a small strip of the material which is to constitute the head is placed over the core piece or shaper,
whereupon these two parts are then placed upon the base 5 and then the clamping members 6,6 are turned. in so as to tightly pinch the endsof the strip constituting the button head in fixed position, which is best seen in section in Fig. 3. The button thus completed is. ready for service, and may be attached to a hose-supporting'tab such as indicated at 3, whereby it may be operated in conjunction with'the loop 1 to grip a thickness of hose in the customary manner.
The button may be placed eitherin the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, or in the position shown in the modification illustrated in Fig. 7, this being entirely immaterial so far as concerns the cooperation of the button and loop. It will be apparent at once that a thickness of hose held over the button head and snugly against the shank, will be efiectively gripped, particularly as the button provides a relatively yielding, yet clinging surface for direct engagement with the hose or stocking. If desired, the base may have a looped extension 8 at one edge, through which the webbing may be threaded in the customary manner. Since the button may be used either in the position shown in Fig. 1, or theposition shown in Fig. 7, in which latter position the shaper piece 5 stands transversely of the slot in the loop 1, it is preferable to cut back the edges of the shank portion of the shaper piece 7, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the material from which the head is formed will extend beyond said edges to engage with the sides of the loop in preference to having the edges of the shaper piece engage therewith. WVhile the button head when viewed from the top is of generally rectangular outline instead of being of the conventional round outline,'this fact is immaterial so far as concerns its use for many purposes, and particularly for use with the hose supporter.
What is claimed is:
1. A button for use for hose supporters and the like, comprising a base, an internal shaper element supported thereon, a strip of relatively yielding material placed over said shaper element, the ends of said strip flaring outwardly and clamping means for securing said strip ends and said shaper piece rigidly on said base.
2. A button for use for hose supporters and the like, comprising a base, an internal shaper element supported thereon, a strip of relatively yielding material placed over said shaper element, the ends of said strip flaring outwardly and clamping means for securing said strip ends and said shaper piece rigidly on said base, said clamping means being integral With said base.
3. A button for use for hose supporters and the like, comprising a base, a shaper element supported thereon, a strip of relatively yielding material placed over said shaper element the ends of said strip flaring out- Wardly and clamping means for securing said strip ends and said shaper piece rigidly on said base, said yielding material entirely covering said shaper and projecting beyond the edges thereof.
a. A button for use for hose supporters and the like, comprising a base, a shaper element supported thereon, a strip of relatively yielding material placed over said shaper element, the ends of said strip flaring out Wardly and clamping means for securing said strip endsand said shaper piece rigidly on said base, said yielding material entirely covering said shaper and projecting beyond the edges thereof, the edges of the intermediate part of the shaper piece being cut back.
5. A button for hose supporters and the like comprising a base having parallel sides, a shaper piece having substantially parallel sides supported thereon, a strip of relatively yielding material folded over said shaper element to cover the top and sides, the ends of said strip flaring outwardly and clamping means at opposite edges of said base for securing the'said strip ends and shaper piece rigidly to said base.
