Description
UNITED STATES Patented March 29, 1904.
PATENT ()FFICE.
SHOE-POLISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 755,980, dated March 29, 1904.
Application filed June 15, 1903- handle a strip is caused to traverse over thesurface to be polished.
The object of this invention is to stretch a strip between its ends and to hold said strip when stretched in a tense condition; and said invention consists in the devices and combinations hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of a polisher embodying my invention;
Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a.
perspective view of the stretching and holding devices; Fig. I, a perspective view of a portion of the handle farthest from the stretching devices with a stirrup or loop secured to said handle.
The handle A is a bar, preferably of wood, having a suitably-shaped middle portion a, adapted to be grasped by the hand, the ends of the handle being reduced to enter ferrules b b, the reduced parts of the handle being indicated at a a by dotted lines in ig. 1. The ferrules b b may be retained on the ends of the handle by pins 5 6 which pass radially into or through said ferrules andreduced portions a a Rigidly secured in the ferrules are loops or stirrups B B, (shown in Figs. 3 and 41,) stirrup B consisting of a single piece of wire bent into a rectangular loop, the corresponding ferrule 72 being preferably cast onto the ends of the wire. The loops B B are alike in their upper portions and are similarly retained in the corresponding ferrules, the ends of the wires which enter the ferrules being flattened and laterally enlarged to prevent said wires from turning in or being withdrawn from said ferrules, as shown in the case of the loop B at b in Fig. 3; but while Serial No. 161,482. (No model.)
the loop B is formed in a single piece, as above stated, the loop B is formed in three pieces, the lower part of the loop B being a roller 6 which turns in eyes 6 b bent in the lower ends of the sides 6 b of the loop B. The roller 6 has projecting radial points 6 adapted to pierce the strap 0, and is provided at its outer end with a radial arm 6, by which said roller may be turned to stretch the strap. The outer end of the arm 6 is provided with a catch 6, which projects inwardly, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, to engage the side 6 of the loop B after the strap has been stretched to prevent a backward or strap-loosening movement of the roller 6 If one end of the strap C is secured to the bottom part 6 of the loop B and the other end is passed under the roller 6 and pierced by the points 6 when the rolleris in the position shown in Fig. 3 and the roller is then turned into the position shown in Fig. 2, said strap will be stretched, and if the catch 6 be then sprung behind the side 6 of the loop B the strip will remain stretched. It will befound convenient to make the strip C longer than twice the distance between the loops B B and to double it over the bottom I) of the loop B and to pass both ends of the strap together under the roller and onto the points 6 before turning the roller to stretch the strap.
I claim as my invention 1. In a polisher, the combination of a suit able handle, two loops rigidly secured thereto at the ends thereof, one of said loops having a roller provided with means for stretching and holding stretched a strip attached to the other of said loops.
2. In a polisher, the combination of a suitable handle, two loops secured thereto at the ends thereof, one of said loops having arigid bar for the attachment of a polishing-strip and the other of said loops having a roller provided with means for engaging said strip and with an arm by which to turn said roller to stretch said strip, said arm having a catch, to engage a stationary part of said last-named loop to prevent a reverse movement of said roller.
3. In a polisher, the combination of asuitable handle, two loops secured thereto at the ends thereof, one of said loops havinga rigid bar for the attachment of a polishing-strip and the other of said loops having a roller provided with teeth for engaging said strip and with an arm by which to turn said roller to stretch said strip, said arm havinga catch, to engage a stationary part of said last-named loop to prevent a reverse movement of said roller;
In testimony whereof I have afiixedmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
