CONNECTOR FOR ELECTRICALLY-HEATED INSTRUMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, FRANK KUHN and F RANK E.'SHAILOR,-CltlZBI1S of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connectors for Electrically-v Heated Instruments, of which the following.
is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to conne tors designed for use on electrically heate instruments such as sad irons and other movable tools.
The invention comprises the means employed for attaching said connector andv for protecting the same mechanically and elec trically as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a.section "through a portion of an electrically heated iron to which the connector is applied; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the insulator blocks; Fig. I is a perspective view sections of the housing; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a .portion of the casing, with the complementary section of the housing connected thereto.
A is an. electrically heated instrumentsuch as a sad iron; B is the heating unit therefor; C are terminals secured to the unit B and pro ecting upward therefroi'n;
and D is an apertured casing through which the terminals-C project.
The flexible conductor E is secured to the terminal C by clamping screws F or equivalent means for maintaining good electrical contact. The terminals and adjacent portion of the conductor are then inclosed in an insulator block' G which is provided with channels H forreceiving the terminals'and their clamping screws, and extensions of said channels I for receiving the adjacent portions of, the flexible conductor. channels I are bent angularly to pass to one side of the bloclr G andtoproduce the necessary frictional resistance for preventing the transmission of strain to the terminals. 4
J is a handle for the instrument detachably engaging the housing D K is a housing for the blockG and which is formed in two sections K. and K having a clamping engagement with each other.
of one of the The The section K is attached to a portion of the handle J and is provided with flanges K which embrace opposite sides of the block The section K has the flanges K for embracing the opposite sides of the block G and these flanges have a snap clamping,
section K and the extension L so that mechanical stresses transmitted through the cord or flexible conductor will not be transmitted to the terminals but will be resisted by the housing K.
The construction is one which has the advantage of being easily assembled, permitting the detachment. of the cord at any time for repair or for renewal while. at' all times, when the instrument is in use, ,a clamping engagement between the flexible conductor and terminal is. maintained, thereby preventing arcing.
IVhat We claim as'our invention is 1. In anelectri'cally heated instrument, the combination with a heating unit having a terminal projecting therefrom, of a casing for inclosing-said unit apertured for the passage of said terminal, a handle for said casing, a.flexible conductor having a clam ing engagement with said terminal, an insulator block for embracing said terminal and adjacent portion of said flexible conductor, a metallic housinghaving a section tary portion of said housing having a snap engagement with said attached section.
2. In an electrically heated instrument, the combination. with an electrical heating unit, o f a terminal projecting therefrom. a casing for inclosing said unit apertured for the passage of said terminal, a handle forsaid casing, aflexible conductor having a clamping engagement with said terminal, an insulator block channeled for the reception of said terminal and having an extension angular channel for the passage of said while the latter will secure the flexible conductor, a metallichousing sec I Lion secured to said h'andle and embracing In testimpny whereof we'aifix our signaggyid i isu'ig'igtoi blbck, a guard for said flexible I v tures in presence of tivd Witnesses/ e n'nductor',mounted upon said housing sec f FRANK KUHNi elon. and \cbmplementary section for said FRANK E. SHAILOR.
