SHARPENING DEVICE FOR DISKS OF DISK HARROWS.
Speciflcationo! Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1916.
Application filed September 7, 1915. Serial No. 49,409.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that We, ALBERT LAWRENCE SAUNDERS and ALBERT HENGESBACH, both of the city of Weyburn, in the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpening Devices for Disks of Disk Harrows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for sharpening the disks of disk harrows and plows, and our object is to devise a tool which may be used to sharpen the disks while they are in place on the harrow.
WVe attain our object by providing a lever arm with a fork adapted to embrace the axles of the harrow and with a hardened steel blade adjustable to and from the fork, and shaped to engage the disk edge.
The tool is constructed in detail and operated substantially as hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a disk harrow illustrating the method of using our sharpening device. Fig. 2 a front elevation of part of the sharpening device on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 3 a side elevation of the same parts.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
This device is formed as a lever arm having the fork 1 formed at its lower end. The upper end 2 is shaped for insertion in a wooden handle 3, in which it is secured by means of the bolts 4. Between the ends of the lever arm is formed the longitudinal slot 5.
6 is a sharpener blade, which is secured to the lever arm by means of the clamping bolt 7 passing through a hole in the sharpener blade and through the slot 5. With this arrangement the sharpener blade can be adjusted to suit the diameter of the disk being operated on, and the angle of the sharpening blade to the lever arm can be varied as may be necessary. The lower edge of the sharpener blade is serrated as shown, the serrations bein the same at each side of the center of the isk so that the tool may be used equally as well on the left hand as on the right hand disks.
The device is used by placing the fork over the axle of the harrow, with the sharpening blade engaging the edge of a disk as shown in Fig. 1. By applying lateral pressure to the lever arm the blade is applied to the edge of the disk at the proper angle and sharpening takes place as the disk is rotated by the forward movement of the harrow. To resist the upward strain on the device due to the pressure of the inclined edges of the serrations on the disks we provide the fork with a pivoted latch 8 which may be clamped below the harrow axle by means of the bolt 9 with which the notch 10 in the latch 8 engages. The serrations are such that if necessary the front of the edge as Well as the back of the edge of the knife may be contacted with the scraper.
This device is effective in use and satisfactorily accomplishes the object of our invention as set out in the preamble to this specification.
What We claim as our invention is 1. A disk sharpening device comprising a lever arm having a fork integrally formed at one end in alinement with the lever; and a sharpener blade secured to the lever transversely thereof and adapted to be engaged with the edge of the disk.
2. A disk sharpening device comprising a lever arm provided with means of engagement with an axle; and a transverse sharpener blade secured to said arm transversely thereof, the edge of said blade nearest the fork and at each side of the lever being serrated, substantially as shown and described.
3. A disk sharpening device comprising a lever arm having a fork formed at one end and a longitudinal slot formed therein between the ends; and a transverse sharpener blade secured to said arm by means of a clamping bolt passing through the blade and through said slot, the edge of said blade nearest the fork being serrated substantially as shown and described.
4. A disk sharpening device comprising a lever arm having a fork integrally formed at one end in alinement with the lever; a sharpener blade secured to the lever transversely thereof and adapted to be engaged with the edge of the disk; a latch pivoted on one arm of the fork; and means for releasahly securing the latch to the other arm of the fork.
Signed at the city of Weyburn this 17th day of August, 1915, in the presence of the two undersigned Witnesses.
ALBERT LAWRENCE SAUNDERS. BERT HENGESBACH.
