BRACE FOR WINDOW FOOD-BOXES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25, 1am.
Application filed December 2, 1914. Serial No. 875,121.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ANTHONY F. BERNA- DAG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of the Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Brace for Window Food- Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvei'nents in window food boxes, and has to deal more particularly with an improved brace for rigidly holding the window box in either of its extreme positions without danger of the wind causing it to swing back and forth.
The invention has for its general objects to provide a comparatively simple and inexpensive bracing device made of two hing edly connected parts which are capable of being easily and quickly locked or unlocked to enable the box to be rigidly held in place or to be swung from a position at one side of the window to a position in front of the window, as when food is to be taken out or placed in the box.
With such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a food box and window with the food box locked in outstanding position; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section showing the box in outstanding position by full lines and indrawn I position by dotted lines; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the inner end of one member of the brace; Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the inner end of the other member of the brace; Fig. 5 is a side view of the connected ends of the members of the brace while the said members are in locked position; Fig. 6 is a similar view showing the members interlocked to enable the food box to be moved to or from outstanding position; and Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of means for locking the parts of the device together.
w standing position, as shown in Fig. 1, and
also to enable the box to be conveniently drawn in to a position in front of the window, a bracing device D is employed between the window sill 1 and the bottom front corner 2 of the box opposite from the lower hinge B.. This bracing device comprises two member (Z and d in the form of strips of metal that are hingedly connected at their inner ends, so that the bracing member will break inwardly toward the window at the joint and thereby cause the box A to swing on the hinges B from the full-line position shown in Fig. 2 to the dotted-line position, and in order to lock the box in this dotted-line position the member (Z is adapted to be locked to the window sill by any suitable means, such as a pin or stud 3 on the window sill, which is adapted to engage in an opening 4 in the member (Z. To manipulate the bracing member D, a handle 5 is provided which has a stem 6 passing through openings 7 and 8' in the members (i and (Z, and on thisstem is a head 9 suitably spaced from the bottom 10 of the handle, so that the members (Z and d will have a limited play on the stem 7, which stem forms a pivot whereby the members (Z and (Z are hingedly connected together. In order to prevent the bracing device D from collapsing when the box is in outstanding position, the memberv cl has its inner end extended somewhat beyond the handle 5, and on the extremity are depending spaced lugs 11 and 12 which straddle the member cl, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, so that the two members cl and d will be locked in alinement and the joint between the members cannot collapse either inwardly or outwardly.
The members (5 and (Z are pivotally connected at 13 and 1% with the window sill and box respectively, and these pivotal connections are loose enough to permit the innor ends of the members d and cl to have a limited up and down movement so as to engage the locking lugs 11 and 12 with or disthe window sill;
engagethem from the member ti, and also to enable the member d to be engaged With or disengaged from the holding stud 3 on When the box is to be drawn in from the position shown in Fig. 1, the user grasps the handle 5' and exerts an upward pull thereon. so as to unlock the members 65 and d, as shown in Fig. 6, and
while the upward pull is maintained the handle is pulled horizontally toward the window,-as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, and as a result the box A will be drawn to the dotted-line position, where it can be locked by engaging the member d with the holding pin 3. To throw the boxoutwardly toits normal position the handle 5 is first I raised to disengage the member d from the pin 3, and this handle is thrown outwardly until the members (Z and cl are in alinement. Asthese members swing outwardly the bev- -eled lug 11 strikes the edge of the member cl and, by a cam action, the member (Z is forced upwardly topermit the lug 11 to slide on the top of the'memberd until the other edge of the latter is reached, when the lug 11 drops OK so that the member d lowers and effects the engagement of the lugs 11 and 12 with opposite edges of the member cl. To prevent over-travel, the lug 12 is longer than'lug 11' so as to engage the member d when the lug 11 rides over the latter.
The foodbox is subjected to considerable wind pressure, and to relieve the strain on the pivot 6 that connects the members (Z and (Z together, the lugs 11 and 12 engage in recesses 11 and 12 and thereby longitudinal strains to which the bracing device is subjected are withstood by the lugs and reces'ses. Instead ofemploying a pair of lugs and slots, as shown in Figs. 3 and l to interlock the members (Z, and t, a single opening 16 may be arranged in the member at and a single lug 17 on the member cl, as shown in Fig. 7.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art tov which the invention a'ppertains, and while I have described the principle of operation, tof gether with the device which I now consider tobe the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown *is'merely illustrative and that such changes may be madewhen desired as are within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
U l. The combination of a window, a food box .hingedly mounted at one side of the window to swing in a horizontal plane, and a bracing device movable in a horizontal plane and having its extremities loosely pivotally connected with thesaid box and sill of the window, said device consisting of two members having their inner ends loosely pivotally connected for permitting the said inner ends of the members to have a limited vertical movement, and interlocking means for normally holding the members in alinement and preventing breaking of the bracing device at the inner pivotal joint, said interlocking means being engageable and disenga'geable by the limited vertical movement of the members, the force of gravity acting on the inner ends of the members serving to maintain them interlocked.
2. The combination of a window, a food box hingedly mounted at one side of the window to swing in a horizontal plane, and a bracing device movable in a horizontal plane and having its extremities loosely pivotally connected with the said box and sill of the window, said device consisting oi? two members having their inner ends loosely pivotally connected for permitting the said inner ends of the members to have a limited vertical movement, interlocking means for normally holding the members in alinement and preventing breaking of the bracing device at the inner pivotal joint, said interlocking means being engageable and disengageable by the limited vertical movement ofthe members, and interlocking means between the window sill and the member connected with the window sill, said last-mentioned interlocking means being engageable and disengageable by the vertical movement of the members, the force of gravity acting on the inner ends of the members serving to maintain them interlocked.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
