To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DARRELL FRANK DYKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sofa-Beds, Lounge-Beds, &c., of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates particularly to sofa-beds, loungebeds, etc., employing a folding-bed comprising three or more foldably-related bed-sections; and the primary object of the invention is to provide an 1111- proved locking-device for securing one folding section to another after the sections have been folded together, to permit the bed-sections to be folded as a unit with relation to the third section.

For convenience of illustration, the invention is shown in connection with asofa-bed in the accompanying drawings, in whicl1 Figure 1 represents a sofa-bed embodying the invention, the view showing one end of the main frame removed; Fig. 2 represents a broken plan sectional view, the section being taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a broken elevational view showing two of the bed-sections in folded relation and secured together by the improved locking-device; Fig. 4, a broken elevational view showing the sofa-seat in inverted condition and the bed in condition to permit the outermost section to be released from the main intermediate section; and Fig. 5, a plan view of the main parts shown in Fig. 3.

In the illustration given, A represents the frame "of a sofa; B, an invertible seat; C, a folding-bed connected with the seat; and D, an improved locking-device.

The frame A may be of any suitable construction. As shown, it comprises ornamental hinge standards or arms 1 connected by a back 2 and a box-frame 3. The lower front corners of the seat are connected, by links 4, to brackets 5 applied to the front corners of the box 3.

The bed is shown as comprising three main sections 6, 7 and 8, the main sections being connected by spacing-sections 9 and 10. The spacing-section 9 is pivotally connected with brackets or hangers 11 carried by the rear lower corners of the seat-frame; and the brackets 11 are connected, by links 12, with elbow links 13 which connect the head-section 6 of the bed with the brackets 5 in a well understood manner. 7 is connected, by links 1 1, with the endrnembers of the seat-frame. The links 1 1 are oined, by links, 15, to arms 16 (Fig. 2) secured to the inner ends of rock-shafts 17 mounted in bearings 18 secured to the lower edges of the end member of the seat-frame. The outer ends of the rock-shaft 17 are equipped with arms 19 connected by links 20 with folding-legs 21 with which the seatframe is equipped.

For the construction thus far described, no novelty is claimed in the present application, except with respect to the lockingdevice D.

The folding-bed frame is of known construction, the small spacing-sections 9 and 10 serving as joints between the main sections, and being adapted to space the main sections with relation to each other when the bed is in folded condition, thereby giving room for the folded bedding. The joints are so constructed that the bed-frame will be maintained in rigid condition when'extended.

The spacing-section 10 is provided with the usual truss 10" which is connected with the bars of the section by pivots 22.

The outer or foot-section 8 of the bed is equipped with legs 23 which are joined to the section by pivots 24 and have extensions connected by links 25 with the pivots 22. The legs 23 are joined by a rod or truss 26 which is bent to V-shape and has its central portion connected by a clip 27 with the rail of the section 8.

The locking device B comprises a pair of latch-members 28 which are joined, by pivots 29, to the arms of the bed-section 8, and which are connected, by links 30, to the pivots 22 carried by the spacing-section 10. The free ends of the latch-members 28 are provided with notches 31 of approximately V-shape and having ofisets 32 adapted to lockingly engage studs 33 which project outwardly from the bars of the main intermediate bed-section 7 In the operation of raising the foot-section 8 from the position shown in Fig. 1 to a vertical position, the links 25 operate to fold the legs 23, while the links 30 operate to move the latch-members 28 to a position at right angles to the arms of the bed-section 8. When the bed-section 8 is folded over the main intermediate section 7, the recesses 31 of the latch-members will engage the studs 33,'and the bed-section 8 may be pressed down until the studs 33 snap into engagement with the offsets 32, when the foot-section 8 will be securely locked to the intermediate section 7. The seat may then be swung upwardly and rearwardly so as to occupy an upright position in the frame of the sofa, in which operation the main sections 8 and 7, occupying the relation shown in Fig. 3, will be carried over so as to occupy a folded relation to the head-section (5 as is well understood.

In the operation of unfolding the bed, after the seat has been turned to the inverted position shown in Fig. ft, the foot-section 8 may be conveniently released from the in termediate section 7 by raising the legs 23 to the position shown in Fig. fl, thereby car rying the section 8 rearwardly from its nor mally folded position, during which operation the links 30 operate to release the offset recesses 32 of the latch-members from engagement with the studs 33, after which the section 8 may be thrown to the extended position. The release may be otherwise effected by pressing the section 8 forwardly from the position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. d, as by means of the foot, whereupon the unfolding of the bed may be completed.

It is usual to turn the lower ends of the legs 23 inwardly, as indicated at 93 (Fig. 5), thus providin foot-portions which may embrace or engage the spacing-section 10 in the manner shown in Fig. 5, thereby adding further to the security of the lock. This ex pedient is unnecessary, but may be employed if desired.

It may be noted that when the section 8 has unfolded, the latch-members 28 are automatically lowered or shifted, as shown in Fig. l; and, as indicated, when the section 3 is raised to the vertical position, the latchmembers are projected to a position at right angles to the arms of the bed-section 8. The locking engagement between the latch-memhers and the locking-studs 33 may then be.

effected in the manner already described, or at will, the legs 23 may be moved to the position shown in Fig. 4, the latch-members lowered into engagement with the studs, and the legs may then be lowered to the position shown in Fig. 3.

The improved bed-section locking-device is well adapted to folding-beds having asection adapted to fold over another section and be locked thereto to enable these sections to be folded as a unit with relation to another section of the bed. especially useful in connection with sofabeds, lounge-beds, etc., having an overturnable or reversible seat and a folding-bed connected with the seat in such manner that the seat will serve to partially or wholly support the bed-structure in the extended position. r

The foregoing detailed description has been given for-clearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art.

In a folding-bed structure, the combination with an intermediate main bed-sec tion, an-outer main bed-section and a spacing-section connecting them, of legs joined to the outer section and connected together, links connecting said legs to the spacing section, latch-members pivotally connected with the outer section, links connecting the latch-members to the spacing-section, and latch-engaging means carried by the intermediate main section.
