The top or front a of the box or case a is provided adjacent to the openings 5 b and b with the words Month, Day, and Year respectively, and the openings 6 to Z2 inclusive, with the words and numerals Total days, and 765 and 1 respectively, and over the numerals 7(35 and 1 are the words Rate per cent, and it will be understood that the foregoing characters designate or point out the meaning thereof, and in Fig. l of the drawings,
1 have shown the first line of characters on the sheets 'm, and n appearing in the openings in the plate 6, but it must be understood that, the normal position of the sheets m and n on the spools is the black line or lines on which the character 0 z ppears.
The numerals in the columns on, m, m and m of the sheet mare the multipliers used in calculating the different amounts of interest on a given sum for a given time.
In the operation of this device, from the position shown in Fig. 1, or in calculating the number of days from Jan. 1, 1913, to October 14, 1913, for example, the gear f and its connected parts being in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, and in full lines in Fig. 2, the crank (Z will be manipulated to force the gear 7 into engagement with the gear 7", and to turn the spool 0, until the characters October 14,
' Fig. 1.
' 2086 and 287, 055041, #04718, 03932,
' follows, it being understood that the sheets m and n are again in the position shown in The gear f will first be thrown into the position shown infull lines in Fig. 5, by means of the head f of the flexible shaft j". The crank d is then again manipulated to turn the spools d and h until the characters March 1, 1860 appear in their corresponding openings 72 b and b 7 and the gear f and its connected parts are again thrown into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 5, or the full line pos1t10n shown in Fig.2, after which the crank (i is again manipulated to rotate all, or both sets of the spools until the characters October 1a, 2086, and 227, 0135a, 03732, 03110, and it will be seen that the answer to the above will be 227 days, and in the operation of returning the sheets m and n, to their normal position, or to. any desired position, the pawls 0, or the handle members 0* thereof, are forced downwardly, which operation disengages the noses 0 thereof and engages the brake members 0 and it will be understood that the unwinding of the sheets on each pair of spools may be operated separately, and the springs j and 7c are the means for returning the sheets to their normal position.
Fig. 4: of the drawings shows one of the above mentioned springs, and it will be seen that the winding of the sheets 7% and n on the spools d and 6 will wind the springs j and up, and when the pawls 0 are disengaged from the gears 71, and '5 the said springs will unwind, and by means of the brake members 0 I prevent the hasty unwinding of the sheets m and n, and should the said sheets not be fully unwound by the said springs, the same can be done, by means of the handles h" and f on the shafts h and 2' In order to find the multiplier for calculating the interest of a given sum for a given time, or from the days between two given dates, the spools and their connectedparts are given the same operation hereinbefore described, and after the number of days have been found between the two given dates, say, for example, from January 1, 1913 to October 14, 1913, or' 287 days, the same is multiplied by the figure appearing in the column under the desired interest, or say six per cent, and in order to illustrate the above, suppose that the interest was to be found on $100, from J an. 1, 1913, to October 14, 1913, or 287 days, at six per cent. I
would, as will be seen in Fig. 7, multiply $100 by .04718, which would give me $4.718,
the interest on $100, for 287 days at six per cent, and it will be further understood that the'interest at any rate per cent, on any sum, and for any length of-time, can be calculated very easily by means of my detween two given dates. In short, I can cal-' culate thev number 'of years and days, or days only, between two given dates, and I can also determine the multiplier to be used for calculating the interest on a given sum for the time between two given dates by my device.
It will be understood that although I have shown the figures in the columns m m, m and m as based on the interest for $1, the same may be based on the interest for $5, $10, and $100, or any other desired sum, in which case, the said figures will be corre spondingly changed.
In Fig. 9 of the drawings, I have shown the use of the shutters 12 and it will be seen that by means of the same, when it is de sired to determine the multiplier to be used in calculating a given interest of say six per cent, the shutters in the openings 6 b and b will be closed, and this will prevent or avoid the mistakes which might occur had not the said shutters been employed, or, in other words, it avoids the confusion of said figures, and the value of these shutters will be understood or appreciated in calculating the interest for a number of sums at the said rate of six per cent., and it will be also understood that my invention is not limited to the means for engaging and disengaging the separate pairs of spools, or to the exact details of the construction herein shown and described, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages. The box or case a is shown as rectangular in cross section, but the said box or case may be of any preferred form, and the shape thereof in cross section and the arrangement of the operative parts therein may be such that the top or front a may have a downwardly and forwardly inclined position so as to facilitate the operation of the machine and accommodate the operator when the said machine is placed on the table or other support.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a computing machine having a spring rewound gear, a combined lock and brake device consisting of a pivotally mounted pawl, a spring for normally retaining said pawl in engagement with said gear, a lever integral with said pawl for disengaging the same from said gear to allow its spring to rewind the same, and a brake integral With said pawl and adapted to bear upon the periphery of said gear when the pawl is disengaged for regulating the speed at which the gear is revolved.
2. In a computing machine having a spool loosely mounted on a slotted shaft, an internal gear mounted on said spool, a gear movable longitudinally of and rotatable with said shaft and adapted to engage said internal gear, a pin slidably mounted in the slot of the shaft and connected to said shaft gear, a flexible shaft connected to said pin and extending through an aperture in said shaft and a handle provided upon the outer end of said flexible shaft, said shaft being also provided with a lock slot in which said handle is adapted to be moved.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 31st day of October 1913.
