(Cl. 235 86) This invention relates to a device for use in computing items such as payroll withholding taxes, social security taxes, or the like.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved device for use in computing tems such as payroll taxes, social security taxes, or the like which may be easily and eiliciently manufactured.
An-other object -of this invention is to provide an improved computing device that is made of plastic material so that it may be easily and economically manufactured.
Still another object 'of this invention is to provide an improved device for computing payroll withholding taxes, social security taxes, or the like, said device comprising one or more webs having printed legends thereon and adapted to be wound from one roller to another, or viceversa by means of one or more manually actuated members, each of which is provided with Ian internal ring gear meshing with pinion gears which are mounted on the ends of the rollers and provided with clutch claws such that said. rollers may be selectively rotated, depending upon the direction in which the actuating member is,

FIG. 8 is an end view of an embodiment of this in- Referring to the drawing in detail, reference numeral 10 designates the housing for this device, which may be of plastic, sheet metal, wood or the like. The housing 10 comprises a top section 10a and a bottom section 10b which abut along the line 10c substantially in 'the middlev of the housing, as shown in FIG. 2. The upper part 10a of the housing is provided with elongated openings or windows .l1-12 and 13-14 through whichV the data appearing on the webs 21 and 22, respectively, The upper part of the housing 10a is also provided with openings'lS and 16 and the lower part 10b is provided with openings 17 and 18. These openings extend transversely across the housing, and the actuating members 23 and24 extend partially out of the housing through these openings, as shown in FIG. 2.

and the teeth of these pinion gears mesh with the teeth of ring gear 25. These pinion gears 27 and 28 are positioned in opposite sides ofthe actuating member. A similar pinion gear arrangement is provided in actuating member 24, and one of these pinion gears 30 is shown in FIG. 2.
Four rollers 31, 32, 33 and 34, which may be made of plastic, and all of which have a rib-shaped core as shown in FIG. 4, are provided in this device. The rollers 31 and 32 are provided for receiving the web 21, as shown in FIG. 4, and rollers 33 and 34 are likewise provided for receiving web 22. Rollers 31 and 32 are supported in the housing by the cross members 35 and 36, and rollers 33 and 34 are supported in the housing by cross members 37 and 38, as shown in FIG. 3. The rollers are provided with bearing surfaces 31a-31b, 32a-32b, 33a- 33b and 34a-34b at the respective ends thereof for itting into suitable holes formed in the selected cross members 35, 36, 37 and 38, as shown in FIG. 3.
The ends ofthe rollers are also provided with studs such as the studs 32e and 32d projecting from the opposite ends of the roller 32, as shown in FIGS. 3 and 7. These studs function as bearings for the pinions. Thus, the pinion 27 is mounted on stud 32d, as shown in FIG. 7. By providing the studs at both ends of the rollers, either end of the rollers may be used for mounting the pinion gear for driving the rollers. The end on which the pinion gear is mounted depends on the direction in which the rollers are to be rotated by the actuating member, as will be more fully described hereinafter. Also, both ends of the rollers are provided with clutch claws, such as the clutch claws 32e shown in FIG. 2 formed in the ends 32a and 32b of the roller 32 which face in opposite directions. Likewise, both sides of the pinion gears are provided with clutch claws such as the clutch claws 27a provided on opposite sides of the pinion gear 27 shown in FIG. 7, and these are also oppositely disposed so that by selecting one or the other of these clutch claws, and by selecting one end or the other of the roller, such roller may 'be rotated either clockwise or counterclockwise. Thus, either roller 31 or 32 may be driven by the actuating member 23, depending on whether this member is rotated forward or backward, and the web 21 may be taken up by roller 31 and paid out by roller 32, or it may be taken up by roller 32 and paid out by roller 31. Likewise, either roller 33 or 34 may be driven depending on Whether actuating member 24 is rotated forward or backward, and the web 22 may be taken up by roller 33 and paid out by roller 34, o-r vice-versa.
As previously described, the housing 10 is made in two parts, 10a and 10b, which are joined together along the middle part 10c as'shown in FIGS. l, 6 and 8. The upper and lower parts 10a and 10b may be held together by suitable cement, if desired. On the other hand, a band of adhesive tape may be provided around the housing so that the parts 10a and 10b may be disassembled, if it is desired to place different webs on the rollers 31, 32, 33 and 34. Other detachable fastening (not shown) may be positioned around the margin parts adjacent to the joint 10c if desired.
The bottom part 10b of the housing is also provided with members 19 and 20, shown in FIG. 2, which are shaped as shown in FIG. 8 so that the device is supp-orted by these members 19 and 20 tilted in the position shown in FIG. 8. As previously described, cross members 35, provided in the housing for supporting rollers 31 and 32, and cross members 37 and 38 support rollers 33 and 34. The cross members 35, 36, 37, 38 and 39 are provided with tubular members 35a, 36a, 37a, 38a and 39a, respectively, formed integral therewith substantially in the center thereof as shown, for example, in the case of cross member 36 and tubular member-36a illustrated in FIG. 5. These tubular members are of a size torsnugly receive the studs 23a and 24a: of actuating members 23 and 24 when the device is assembled, as shown in FIG. 2. Thus, the bearing stud 23a of actuating device 23 is inserted into the tubular member 37a of cross member 37, and bearing stud 24a of actuating member 24 is inserted into the tubular member 39a of cross member 39.
- The rollers 31, 32, 33 and 34 and actuating members 23 and 24, and pinion gears 27, 28, 29 and 30 may be assembled with the cross members 35, 36, 37, 38 and 39, as shown in FIG. 3, prior to insertion of this assembly into the housing 10. The cross members 35, 36, 3'7, 38 and 39 ar-e placed into suitable grooves formed in the bottom part b of the housing, as shown in FIG. 2, so that these cross members are held in their proper spaced relationship. The members 21a and 22a are then assembled with the cross members 35-36 and 37-38 by -placing the end parts of these members in suitable recesses formed in these cross members.
The end parts of members 21a and 22a are provided with short recesses ,adapted to receive projections formed on the cross members, as shown in the case of cross member 36 illustrated in FIG. 5. The members 21a and 22a are provided for the purpose of holding the Webs 21 and 22, respectively, under the Windows 11-12 and 13-14, respectively. Thus, the -member 21a must be inserted under the web 21 when this member is assembled with the cross members 35 and 36 so that it is positioned as shown in FIG. 4. Likewise, the member 22a must be inserted under the web 22 when this member is assembled with the cross members 37 and 38. The top part 10a of the housing 10 is provided with corresponding recesses for receiving the upper parts of the cross members 35, 36, 37, 38 and 39 so that these cross members are held in predetermined positions when the top part 10a of the housing is assembled with the bottom part 10b.
Suitable data is printed on the Webs of 21 and 22 and suitable legends are attached to the top of the housing 10 adjacent to the Windows 11, 12, 13 and 14 so that the device may be used in making the desired tax or other computations. The data o-n web 21 and the legends adjacent to Windows 11 and 12 are such that, by manipulating the actuating member 23, the operator of this device may determine a persons withholding tax, for example. The data on the web 22, together with the legends adjacent to windows 13 and 14, are such that the operator of this device may determine the amount of an employees social security tax by rotating actuating member 24 until the employees wages appear in window 13 and reading the social security tax in Window. 14. Web 21 bears printed legends such that when this web is moved under Windows 11 and 12, the employees earnings or Wages will appear in window 11 and the amount of the withholding tax` corresponding thereto will appearin window 12. Window 12 is of substantial length inasmuch as it is made to accommodate from zero to 10 withholding exemptions claimed by the employee. The number of exemptions is indicated by suitable legends attached to the outside of the Window so that these legends 4are aligned with the corresponding columns on the web 21. Thus, the operator would simply look on the top of the housing 10 and find the number of exemptions claimed and read the Withholding tax from web 21 opposite this number after having rotated the web so that the employees wages appear in window 11.
While I have shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, it will be understood that the invention is capable of variation and modification from the form shown so that its scop-e should be limited only by the scope of the claims appended hereto.
What I claim is:
1. In a device for use in computing items such as payroll withholding taxes, social security taxes or the like, the combina-tion of a housing of elongated conguration, said housing having longitudinally extending openings on the top thereof, a pair off rollers positioned in said housing parallel tothe length thereof, a web with printed legends thereon, said web being movable from one of said rollers to the other, spaced transverse members positioned in said housing rotatably supporting 4said rollers, a rotatable actuating member having gear teeth thereon, a pair of pinion gears, said rollers having studs .at adjacent free ends thereof rotatably supporting said pinion gears with the teeth thereof engaging the teeth of said actuating member, a rst directional clutch means coupling one oi said pinion gears to one of said rollers, and a second directional clutch means coupling the other of said pinion gears to the other of said rollers, said housing having transverse slots receiving said actuating member so that said actuating member extends out of said housing therethrough wlhereby said actuating member may be rot-ated from the outside of said housing, the sides of said slots being adjacent to said actuating member and keeping said actuating member gear meshing with said pinion gears and keeping said pinion gears on the supporting studs therefor, the directions of said clutches being oriented such that one of said rollers is driven when said actuating member is turned forward and the -other of said rollers is driven when said actuating member is turned backward, said web being taken up by said one roller and paid out by the other of said rollers when said actuating member is turned forward and taken up by said other `roller and paid out by said one roller when said actuating member is turned backward, the printed legends on said web being moved under said openings and aligned with legend-s positioned on the out-side of said housing adjacent said openings when said web is moved between said rollers.

pair of .pinion gears, each of said rollers having a stud on an end thereof, one of said pinion gears mounted on the stud of one of said rollers and the other of said pinion gears mounted on the stud of the other of said rollers, said studs supporting said pinion gears meshing with said ring gear of said actuating member, said transversely extending slots limiting the lateral movement of said actuating member and keeping said ring gear thereof` meshing With said pinion gears, a iirst means coupling said fone of said pinion gears to said one of said rollers, and a second means coupling said other of said pinion gears with said other of said rollers, said housing compris ing a top section and a bottom section and each of said sections having recesses therein for receiving said trans` verse members and Iholding these members in predeter-V mined positions, whereby said rollers may be assembled with said transverse members and said pinion gears mounted on said studs and said actuating member ring gear meshed with said pinion gears, yand said transverse mem-V bers placed in the recesses in said bottom section with said actuating member extending through the transverse 5 slot in said bottom section prior toassembly of said top section with said bottom section land said transverse members, said one of said rollers being driven when said actuating memlber is turned iforward, Iand the other of said rollers being driven when said actuating memlber is turned backward, whereby said web is taken up |by said one roller and paid out by the other of said rollers when said actuating member is turned forward and taken up by said other roller and paid out :by said one roller when said 10 actuating member is turned backward, the printed legends on said web Ibeing moved under said longitudinal openings Iand aligned with legend-s positioned on the outside of said between said rollers.

Claims (1)

1. IN A DEVICE FOR USE IN COMPUTING ITEMS SUCH AS PAYROLL WITHHOLDING TAXES, SOCIAL SECURITY TAXES OR THE LIKE, THE COMBINATION OF A HOUSING OF ELONGATED CONFIGURATION, SAID HOUSING HAVING LONGITUDINALLY EXTENDING OPENINGS ON THE TOP THEREOF, A PAIR OF ROLLERS POSITIONED IN SAID HOUSING PARALLEL TO THE LENGTH THEREOF, A WEB WITH PRINTED LEGENDS THEREON, SAID WEB BEING MOVABLE FROM ONE OF SAID ROLLERS TO THE OTHER, SPACED TRANSVERSE MEMBERS POSITIONED IN SAID HOUSING ROTATABLY SUPPORTING SAID ROLLERS, A ROTATABLE ACTUATING MEMBER HAVING GEAR TEETH THEREON, A PAIR OF PINION GEARS, SAID ROLLERS HAVING STUDS AT ADJACENT FREE ENDS THEREOF ROTATABLY SUPPORTING SAID PINION GEARS WITH THE TEETH THEREOF ENGAGING THE TEETH OF SAID ACTUATING MEMBER, A FIRST DIRECTIONAL CLUTCH MEANS COUPLING ONE OF SAID PINION GEARS TO ONE OF SAID ROLLERS, AND A SECOND DIRECTIONAL CLUTCH MEANS COUPLING THE OTHER OF SAID PINION GEARS TO THE OTHER OF SAID ROLLERS, SAID HOUSING HAVING TRANSVERSE SLOTS RECEIVING SAID ACTUATING MEMBER SO THAT SAID ACTUATING MEMBER EXTENDS OUT OF SAID HOUSING THERETHROUGH WHEREBY SAID ACTUATING MEMBER MAY BE ROTATED FROM THE OUTSIDE OF SAID HOUSING, THE SIDES OF SAID SLOTS BEING ADJACENT TO SAID ACTUATING MEMBER AND KEEPING SAID ACTUATING MEMBER GEAR MESHING WITH SAID PINION GEARS AND KEEPING SAID PINION GEARS ON THE SUPPORTING STUDS THEREFOR, THE DIRECTIONS OF SAID CLUTCHES BEING ORIENTED SUCH THAT ONE OF SAID ROLLERS IS DRIVEN WHEN SAID ACTUTING MEMBER IS TURNED FORWARD AND THE OTHER OF SAID ROLLERS IS DRIVEN WHEN SAID ACTUATING MEMBER IS TURNED BACKWARD, SAID WEB BEING TAKEN UP BY SAID ONE ROLLER AND PAID OUT BY THE OTHER OF SAID ROLLERS WHEN SAID ACTUATING MEMBER IS TURNED FORWARD AND TAKEN UP BY SAID OTHER ROLLER AND PAID OUT BY SAID ONE ROLLER WHEN SAID ACTUATING MEMBER IS TURNED BACKWARD, THE PRINTED LEGENDS ON SAID WEB BEING MOVED UNDER SAID OPENINGS AND ALIGNED WITH LEGENDS POSITIONED ON THE OUTSIDE OF SAID HOUSING ADJACENT SAID OPENINGS WHEN SAID WEB IS MOVED BETWEEN SAID ROLLERS.
