Secured in the end walls A, A, of the casing are a series of cross rods, indicated at 4:, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. The rod 4 carries the number-settin wheels or disks, 1, 1, 1 et seq., each num ered from 1 to 0, constituting the number setting wheels or disks; each of said number-setting wheels or disks being operatively connected to a pinion or gear 4, and being independently movable with said pinions or ears on said rod 4, or on a sleeve mounted t ereon. The rod 6 is disposed between the rods 4 and 5, and carries pinions 6 loose thereon and meshing with the pinions 4 and 5 of the wheels ordisks 1, 1 1 et seq., and the wheels or disks 2, 2 2, et seq., respectively, so that any movement imparted to said number-setting wheels or disks will be transmitted to the printing wheels or disks; the latter being arranged to turn in either direction but only imparting movement to the pinions 12, which in turn efi'ect movement of the wheels or disks 3, 3 3", et seq., of the totalizing train through the pawl and ratchet mechanism noted, when moving in one direction.

'When i the 5 of the fourth place is added by bringing the fourth setting wheel 1 into position, to indicate 5 adjacent the base line, a similar number of the printing wheel or disc 2 will appear in printing position, while the fourth wheel or disk 3 of the registering train will have a five space movement and the 0 will be brought to registering position in the fourth place, while the fifth registering wheel or disk 3, will be moved one space; making the amount indicated 601.80. Final- 1 when the setting wheel 1 is moved to p0- sltion the 2 of the fifth place with respect to the base line, the printing Wheel or disk 2 will be similarly moved, while the fifth registering wheeler disk 3 will be moved two spaces to indicate 8, and the amount indicated on the registering train will be 801.80, while the printing wheels'ordisks will be in position to print 256.60; which has been added to the previous amount indicated by the registering train, i. ,e., 545.20.
In adding from right to left the process is quite simple, as motion is first imparted to the hundredths wheel or disk of the setting train and thence to the unit wheel or disk of the totalizing train and the same will be moved step by step, depending upon the amount proposed to be added to the totalizing train, as indicated by the setting wheel. Upon completing a single revolution, such hundredths wheel of'the totalizing train imparts motion to the tenths wheel, which movement is effected by the single toothed pinion associated with the hundredths wheel, engaging a tooth of the ratchet wheel 9 and the latter transmitting movement to the pinion 9* meshing with the pinion or gear 7 carried by the tenths wheel; hence one-tenth of a revolution imparted to the ratchet element operated by the hundredths wheel will, by the cooperation of thepinions mentioned, impart one-tenth of a revolution to the tenths wheel, and such opera tion will be duplicated in the successive operations of the units, tens and hundreds" wheels of the totalizing train.
Under some conditions and in the hands of an unskilled operator it may happen that there will be a tendency to add the sums from left to right, or to add the numerals representing parts of the sums indiflenently.
Under these circumstances, assuming for intotalizing set. When the setting wheel or disk 1 of the units (or third) place is operated to bring the numeral 8 in line with the numeral 1 of the setting wheel or disk 1, such positioning of the setting Wheel or disk 1 will have effected movement of the totalizing wheel or disk 3 eight-tenths of a revolution which, plus the three-tenths already turned with relation to its single toothed wheel, will bring about an addition whereby the tens and the units wheels or disks (the fourth and third places) of the totalizing set, will read 61. This means, therefore, that the units wheel after completing' its revolution must impart one-tenth of a revolution to the tens (or fourth) wheel or disk but in order that such movement of the units (or third) wheel or disk shall not affect in any Way motion of the tenths (or second) Wheel or disk the ratchet wheel. 9* which has been moved by the single toothed pinion of the units wheel is so connected to the ratchet wheel 9, that the single tooth 13*- of the wheel 13 will not be moved and if it happens to lie adjacent to the ratchet wheel 9 the movement of the latter will be halted; the pawl carried thereby slipping on the teeth of the ratchet 9, thereby preventing the operation of the tenths wheel and simply adding into the units" Wheel.
In order that the type faces of the printing wheels may be inked properly for printing purposes, the casing may be provided with inking rolls 20, disposed on each side of the printing wheels; said rolls being carried by cross bars 21 and being free to rotate by contact with the type faces of the printing wheels. As the lower type-faces, normally out of contact with the inking rolls may not receive ink therefrom, I preferably provide the inner surface of the cover sections C with inking pads 21, as clearly indicated in Figs. 2 and 3.
I claim:
1. In a pocket printing device, the combination of a supporting casing having end walls, a cross rod secured to said end walls, aseries of number setting wheels rotatably mounted on said cross rod, gear Wheels operatively connected to said number setting wheels, a second cross rod, a series of printing wheels rotatably mounted on said second cross rod, gear wheels operatively connected to said printing wheels, a series of intermediate pinions meshing with the respective gear wheels of the setting wheels and the printing wheels whereby movement imparted to said setting wheels may be transmitted to the printing wheels, inking rolls set on opposite sides of the printing wheels;- the casing having curved pockets for the reception of said inking rolls and an opening to expose the edges of the printing Wheels, and a closure end walls, a series of printing wheels mounted on said second rod, gear wheels operatively connected to each of said printing wheels, an intermediate rod disposed between the other rods, a series of pinions mounted on said intermediate rod and meshing with the respective gears of the number setting wheels and the gears of the printing wheels whereby movement of the number setting wheels may be transmitted to the printing wheels, inking rolls set at opposite sides of the printing wheels; the casing having an opening to expose the edges of said printing wheels, a displaceable cover comprising a pair of sections hinged to the wall of the casing for said opening, and inking pads carried by the inner side of the hinged sections comprising said cover.
3. In a pocket printing device, the combination of a supporting casing having end walls, a cross rod secured to said end walls, a series of number setting wheels rotatably mounted on said cross rod, said number setting wheels having notched edges with radial recesses extending from the roots of said notches, pawls arranged to engage said notched edges, gear wheels operatively connected to said number setting wheels, a second cross rod, a series of printing wheels rotatably mounted on said second cross rod, gear wheels operatively connected to said printing wheels, a series of intermediate pinions meshing with the respective gear wheels of the a setting wheels andthe printing wheels whereby movement imparted to said setting wheels may be transmitted to the printing wheels, inking rolls set on opposite sides of the printing wheels; the casing having an opening to expose the edges of the printing wheels, and t a closure for said opening com rising a pair of sections hinged to the wall 0 the casing.
