To all whom it may concern Be t known that I, FRANK F. Minus,
citizenof the United States, residing at Yankton; in the countyof Yankton' and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful linproveinents n Hinges, of
i Which thefollowing is a specification.
; the member.
. i As before stated, the present invention is so constructed that a- This invention relates to door hinges," and more particularly to an improvement in the hinge shown in my Patent; ;No.'1,091,58e,
issued March 31, 1914i. v
More specifically speaking, the present in vention is an improvement in hinges of that type employed in hanging barn and similar doors, and particularly, doors that are constructed of boardsdisposededge to edge horizontally. I 7 It is one aim of the invention to provide a hinge of the type mentioned so constructed that the door hung thereby will'be securely held against'sagging and loose from its frame. I
Another aiinof the invention is to providea hinge so, constructed that any desired number of hinges may, be employed and mounted upona single pintle, Which serves to properly aline the hinges and to further prevent sagging of the door The invention also aims against being torn to. provide a hinge so constructed that the member thereofi Which is to be secured to the door frame, Will requirebut 'a single bolt for its attaohment, the boltbeing adaptedtobe readily 5 notches.
assembled with the .member and disconnected therefrom, and the bolt opening being so located as not to materially Weaken number of them maybeemployed in hanging a door, and this feature adaptsthe hinge for use in hanging doors comprising an upper and a loiverysection. In this connection the invention contemplates so constructing the door carried members of the hinges that When employed in connection With a door comprising an upper and a lower section, thelo'wer section may be liftedto adapt it who swung over snow drifts or other'obstruct'ions, and to permit of the passage therebeneath ofsmall stock. y i
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 I is a View in elevation of several of the hinges embodying the present invention arranged to supporta single door, Fig.2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating the hinges arspecification of Letters Patent.

ranged to support a door comprising upper anddloiyer sections,,the upper section being shown swung open and the lower section being shown in dottedlines in lifted position. l ig. 3 is a perspective View of the door carried member of the hinge. Fig. dis a simi lar view of that member of the hinge which is carriedby the door frame. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary rear elevation of the hinge member shown in Fig. 4. U
Corresponding and like parts are referred to'iiithe following description and indicated in all thevieivs of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters. I As before stated, the hinge embodying the present invention is particularly designed for use in hanging doors made up of a number: of boards disposed horizontally edge to edge, these boards being indicated in the drawings by the numeral l. These boards 1 are assembled and secured together in the manner shown and described inmy above-mentioned patent and hence the manner of assembling and securing them will only be briefly described herein; At the pointsiativhich the hinges are to be located,
, the meeting-edges of the boards, at that side of the door Which is to be the hinged side,
cut away, as indicated at-2, and notched, as: indicated at 8, and angle iron bars 4.- are secured to opposite faces of the door and eX- tend vertically and have one edge of their attached Wings registering with the said Thatmember of each hinge which is'carriedbythe door comprises a Web 5 which is flat sided and which is provided at e v a one edge, with anintegral check portion 6 hinge embodying the i which projects above and below the plane of the Web and extends from one end of the saidedge of the Web to a point adjacent the other end thereof.- ri clieelrrneinber' 7 is formed integral with the opposite edge of the Web 5 and this latter cheek member projects beyondfthe' first mentione'd end of the iveb EtHCl'lS formed With an eye 8 toengage the pintle of the hinge,as will be pr'e-sently explained. A bracing and reinforcing Web 9 isformed integral With the outerface ofthe cheek portion 7 and with the eye'S, -,.thev eye being offset Withrelation to the plane of -'the said cheek portion, Atits "other end, the Web 5 is formed with] an abutment portion "10 which occupies a ter v tic'a'l plane at right angles to the planes, oc-
this abutment portion projects above'and' "cupied by the cheek portions 6 and7,'and I V below the said end of the web 5. In as sembling the member with the door, t is disposed with its web 5 lyingwithin the cut-away portions 2 of the edges of the boards and with the projecting parts of its abutment portions lying within the notches The abutment portion 10 projects also at its side edgesbeyond the edges of the web 5, and these projecting edge porions engage against the edges ofgthe attached wings or flanges of 1the angle iron bars In this manner thesaid hinge members are securely anchored to the door and are prevented against'displacement in any direction, it being understood that the cheelr portions 6 and 7 rest against opposite edges of the boards between the edges of which the web 5 of the hinge member is secured.
That member of each hinge which is secured to the door frame, comprlses an attaching leaf 11 formed atone end with a laterally o-Eset eye 12 braced by a web 13 which is integral with the eye and with one face of the said attaching portion. At one point in its line of juncture with the face of the attaching portion 11, the web 13 is notched, as indicated. at it, and at this point, the attaching member is formed with an opening 15 which is'substantially of mushroom form, the narrowed portion of the opening-being indicated at 16. The bolt which is employed in securing this member to the door frame is indicated by the nu meral 17 and is of the ordinary form having a rounded head. In assembling the bolt with the member, the boltv is disposed substantially parallel to the portion 11 and its head and the adjacent portion of its shank are caused to enter the opening 15, the bolt being. rotated about its head, as a center, as 1t is inserted into the opening. The notch 141 016 course permits of such insertion of the head end of the bolt in theopening 15 and when the bolt has been rotated to extend at right angles from the attaching portion 11, its head will be prevented from passing through the opening. The shank of the bolt is then inserted through an opening bored through the upright of the doorframe, and a nut is threaded upon the bolt and tightened. 7 p
As before stated, any desired number of hinges may be employed in hanging a door depending of course upon the type of its weight, and its height and width. In
' hanging a single door, such as shown in Fig.
l of the drawings, the required number of Vihinge. membersshown in Fig. l are secured tical alinement. The door to the upright of the door frame in the manner above described with the eyes 12 in veris then supported with the eyes 8 of its hinge members resting upon the eyes 12 of the frame carried hinge members and the pintle of the hinge, which comprises a-suitable length of pipe or rod door,
material, indicated at 18, is inserted throughthe eyes. Where the hinges are to support adoor comprising an upper and a lower section, the sections comprising the door are hung in the manner above described and so that when the sections are closed, the lower edge of the upper section will lie close to or meet the upper edge of the lower section. By reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings, in which such a door is illustrated, it will 1 be section and the eye 12 of the lower hinge of the upper section. Inasmuch as'theeyes,
observed that there is a space between, the eye 8 of the upper hinge of the lower door to swing this section over a snow drift or,
other obstruction, the upper section having of course been first swung to open position;
or it may be desirable to lift or raise the lower section to permit. small stock to pass beneath thesame. 1 i
It willbe understood from the foregoing that the narrowed portion 16 ofthe opening .in'the hinge member 11 permitsof the ad justment of this hinge member with respect to the bolt 17, siould the door not fit tight. at the hinge'connection or should the bolt opening in the door frame have been bored at the wrong place and in order that the hinge member will be prevented from slipping, after the bolt has been tightened, the:
rear face of the'member is formed with serrations 11. V
It will furthermore be understood from an 'inspectionof the drawings and from the foregoing description of the invention that.
inasmuch as the pintleemployed is common to all of the hinges, the-hinges will be securely held in alinement with each other in every position of the door. Furthermore the weight of the door exerts a pull upon the set of hinges directly in the verticalplane of the door as distinguished from the pull exerted to one side or the other of this plane in the use of the ordinary hinge, and this strain is evenly distributed between'the several hinges due to the provision of the angle bars 4 and the manner in which the hinge members 5 cooperate therewith.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a
hinge member comprising a web having door-face-engaging cheek portions integral with its lateral edges, and having an eye integral with one endof one of said check portions and laterally offset with respect theret.
'2. As a new article of manufacture, a hin e member com P181110 an attachin orr b i 7 tion hZLVHI an e e and JIOVlClGd' with a remforcing web integral with one face of the portion and formed at a point in the line of juncture with the said face With a notch, the said attaching portion being formed with an opening located opposite the notch.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a hinge member comprising an attaching portion having an eye and provided With a reinforcing web integral with one face of the portion and formed at a point in the line of juncture with the said lace With a notch,
the said attaching portion being formed with said opening having its Wall of an outline approximately corresponding to the outline I of a vertical section through the head end 15 of a bolt.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
