IMPROVEMENT IN INVALID BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,861, dated July 11, 1871.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MANsEL A. ORMsBEE, of Fair Haven, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Invalid Bed 5 and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear7 and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciiication, 'in'which- Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my'improved invalid bedstead. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.

This invention has for its object to provide an invalid bedstead7 which will permit the separation of the mattress from the invalids direct support without requiring` then-latter to be dis turbed. The invention consists in the combina-VV tion of parts hereinafter described Vand subsequently claimed.
Invalid beds were heretofore generally provided with a vertically-adjustable sheet or support which had to be elevated when a vessel was to be introduced between it and the mattress. The labor required for thus elevating and lowering the sick person was considerable7 and is en, tirely overcome by making the mattress adjustable.

is stretched upon a frame, C, which is, by cords or bands a a., suspended from the upper part of the bedstead-frame, said cords orbands being preferably provided with hooks b b at their upper ends so that they may thereby be suspended from the upper edge or part ofthe bedstead head and foot-rest. D is the mattress or actual bed-bottom. It is7 by cords or bands c c, suspended from rollers or rounds d e, which are provided at the ends ofthe bedstead. rlhe roller cl isa windlass, with a 'crank-handle, f, and ratchet-wheel g, and is locked by a pawl, h. By turning it the mattress can be raised or lowered at will to permit in the latter casethe inter-position of a vessel between sheet and mattress. When the mattress is elevated it supports the sheet, and relieves the bands a, which may be detached from the bedstead.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Ihe sheet-frame (l suspended by bands a a having hooks b b, and the mattress l) suspended by bands c c from rollers d e, which have crank mechanism attached thereto7 combined as described with the bedstead-frame A, for the purpose specied.
