ToaZZ wiwm it may concern .Be it known that I, FENTON D. CRAIG, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle-Fastening Devices,- of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in devices for securing tools to their supporting handles.
The primary object of the inventicn' is to provide a construction in which the tool may be readiiy connected to the handle without the necessity of, inserting the shank of the tool within the handle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction which will effectually support, the tool against movement longitudinally of the handle and in which the securing means will not weaken the handle at the. point where the tool is secured thereto.
Another object of the invention is to provide a structure in which the tool may be e effectually supported on the handle without welding its shank portion,- the securing means preventing movement of the tool transversely of the handle as well as longitudinally thereof. j
A still further object is to provide a structure in which the tool may be secured to the handle without the necessity of heating the tool shank.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
In, the drawings, 10 designates the tool handle the terminal 11: of which is tapered. The tool 12 is provided with a shank 13 which is formed with-ca taperedbarrel l4.
This barrelis providedwith longitudinal slot 15 which terminates adjacent the shank in a ll' shaped slot 16. In assembling the tool on the handle, the tapered terminal of the handle is placed within the barrel ll until its end portion 17 is brought into alinement with the terminal of the slot 15. The plate 18, which constitutes the securing means, is concav'ed, being tapered longitudinally. The plate is provided adjacent its larger end with the curved lateral extensions 19 formed with bolt receiving apertures 20. The plate at its smaller end is bent upon itself, being notched on each side as at 21, whereby its terminal 22 may be conveniently bent at right angles to the plate In assembling the securing device, it will be understood that the plate 18 is first placed upon the barrel lfl, the extension 21 being inserted within the b'arrel, through the V-sha'ped slot 16; The centracted neck formed by notching the extensi'on at the points 21, permitting the plate to be moved longitudinally of the barrel until the neck portion wedges in the V- shaped slot 16. The handle is then inserted within the barrel until its terminal 17 contacts with the extension 21, effectually wedging the extension in the ii-shaped slot.
Attention is called to' thefact that when the extension is wedged in the \l-shaped slot and carried practically to the end of said slot, the double portion 23 extends beyond the slot toward the tool and engagesthe bar-- rel. The barrel adjacent its open end is formed with bolt receiving openings which a'line with the openings formed in the extension 19 of the plate 18. With the handle thus assembled within the barrel a split ring 25 is placed about the barrel adjacent its open end, the split ring being formed with bolt receiving openings 26 which register with the bolt receiving openings of the barrel and the plate. A bolt 2? is then inserted through the alined openings of the plate, ring and the' barrel, the bolt extendin throu h an opening 28' formed in the handle 10. The head 29 of this bolt is canted. whereby it conforms to the curvature of the extension 19 with which it 0on tacts. After the bolt has been inserted through the tool and the securing member a nut is placed onit s threaded te minal 30, the nut being ti htened to draw the sides ofthe barrel together and inbin'di'ngcon tact the. tool-handle.- Particular attention is called to the fact that when the bolt is tightened to draw the barrel in contact with the tool handle, the binding action will not only occur at the point where-the bolt passes through the barrel but also throughout the entire circumference of the barrel, binding at a point diametrically opposite the slot formed therein as well as adjacent the slot. The extension 19 through which the threaded end of the bolt 27 extends is formed with a projection which, after the nut has been tightened, is bent to embrace one of the flats of the same, whereby further rotation of the nut is prevented.
It will further be noted that the tool is effectually supported on the handle and that after the bolt has been placed in position and the nut. which is arranged thereon tightened, relative movement of the handle and the tool is prevented. Particular attention is called to the fact that the extension 22 of the plate 18 prevents the handle from moving within the barrel toward the tool. It will also be obvious that the plate is effectually held against movement not only by the securing bolt which passes through its extensions 19, but by its binding contact with the wall of the V-shaped slot 16. The mechanism, therefore, provides an effectual handle fastening device by means of which the tool may be quickly and securely connected to the handle.
In the form shown in Fig. 6, the barrel 13 is provided with a relatively wide slot 31 which permits the plate 18 to be moved longitudinally of the barrel in assembling the tool on the handle. In this form, the plate bears directly on the barrel, clamping the parts together, a bolt passing through the plate and barrel.
In both of the forms illustrated, it will be noted that the barrel is slotted fora suffi-- The many advantages of a construction of this character will be clearly apparent as it will be noted that it provides means whereby a tool may be effectually supported on a handle without weakening the handle at the point of attachment by boring the same to receive the shank of the tool or by forming therein-numerous transverse apertures for the reception of securing devices, It will also be seen that the structure'may be easily and economically manufactured and that the variousparts may be readily assembled. Having this described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A tool formed with a shank, said shank terminating. in a barrel, the barrel being slotted longitudinally, a handle, one end of which'is received within the barrel, a plate partially embracing the barrel, said plate being formed with an extension disposed at right angles to its body portion, said extension contacting with the handle to restrict its movement longitudinally of the barrel in one direction, the plate being provided with apertured extensions, the apertures and said extensions alining with openings formed in the barrel adjacent its open end,
and a securing device passing through said apertures and the handle, there being means arranged on the securing-device for contracting the barrel to bring the samein binding contact with the handle. 7 y
2. A handle fastening device for tools in which the tool is provided With a hollow cylindrical extension constituting a shank,
formed with a barrel, said barrel being slotted longitudinallv, a handle received within the barrel, a plate provided with'an extension which projects within the barrel and contacts with the end of the handle, and means for connecting the plate to the barrel, whereby the barrel may be contracted and dle.
4. A device for securing tools to their supporting handles, comprising a barrel formed integral with the tool and constituting a shank, a handle received within the barrel, said barrel being slotted longitudinally, a concaved plate embracing the barrel, and provided with an extension which projects within the barrel, said extension contacting with the end of the handle, whereby movement of the handle longitudinally of the barrel in one direction is restricted, said plate being formed with apertured extensions, there being apertures formed in the barrel on both sides of the slot, which is ar-' ranged therein, the apertures alining with the apertures in the plate, a split ring embracing the barrel and plate, there-being apertures formed in the ring which aline with the apertures arranged in the plate and barrel, and a bolt passing through said aper tures. said bolt extending through the handle. 5. A device forsecuring tools to theirsup-j P s handles i l n a t e-L ea e brought into binding contact with the hanbarrel provided with a longitudinal slot opening through the free end of the barrel and enlarged at its inner end, a plate provided at one end with a lateral extension slidable in the slot when the plate extends at right angles to the barrel and adapted to seat in the enlarged end of the slot and be held against outward movement when the plate is swung into alinement with the barrel, and means for connecting the free end of the plate with the free end of the barrel to contract the latter.
6. A device for securing tools to their supporting handles including a tool formed with a barrel, said barrel being slotted longitudinally, a handle adapted to be inserted in the barrel, a plate having a rebent end, the terminal of which is bent at right angles to the plate to project within the barrel through the slot and contact with the end ofthe handle, said plate at either side of the terminal bearing against the outer face of the barrel, and means for connecting the plate to the barrel to contract the barrel and force it intobinding engagement with the handle.
7. A device for securing tools to their supporting handles including a tool formed with a handle receiving barrel having a longitudinal slot, a plate having a terminal insertible in the slot and adapted to receive the end of a handle inserted in the barrel to limit its inward movement, and means for contracting the barrel to bring it into binding engagement with the handle, said means also securing the plate to the barrel.
8. A device for securing tools to their supporting handles including a tool formed with a handle receiving barrel having a longitudinal slot, a plate adapted to be positioned to cover the slot and provided with a terminal extending through and having locking engagement with the slot, said terminal being adaptedto receive the end of a handle inserted in the barrel to limit its inward movement, and means for securing said plate to the barrel, said means also being adapted to secure the barrel to a handle seated therein.
