UNION SUIT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 11, 1916.
1 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, .Tosnrri D. MORLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in Utica, New York, have invented certain Improvements in Union Suits, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide simple and eiiicient means for covering the usual seat aperture in a union suit while yet permitting the aperture to be readily uncovered when desired, the cover naturally assuming the position for closing the aperture and dispensing entirely with the use of overlapping folds or flaps in the crotch portion of the garment.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a rear view of sufficient of a union suit to illustrate my invention, my attachment being shown in position to cover the seat aperture; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the attachment as adjusted to uncover said aperture; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line aa., Fig. 1, but on a larger scale than said figure, and Fig. 1 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but illustrating another embodiment of my invention.
In the drawing, 1 represents the body portion of the garment, 2 the upper portions of the legs thereof, and 3 the usual seat aperture formed in the body of the garment. In order to cover this aperture I employ an apron 1- of any suitable textile material, preferably knitted fabric similar to that of which the garment itself is usually made, the top of this apron being secured to the body of the garment at or above the top of the aperture, as shown for instance at 5 in Fig. 1. At each side of the apron 4, shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is a hem 6, or other suitable form of guideway, for the reception of a strap or tape 7 which is secured to the garment at its upper and lower ends and constitutes a guide for the apron a when the latter is raised, as shown in Fig. 2, so
as to uncover the aperture 3, or is lowered, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to cover said aperture. The opposite guiding straps or tapes serve to maintain the apron 4 in a laterally stretched condition so that when it is lowered it presents but a single thickness of fabric lying flat against the back of the garment and therefore causing no undue increase in the bulk of the same, all overlying folds or flaps in the crotch of the garment being dispensed with, thereby overcoming an objection to that class of garments known as closed crotch union suits. Instead of providing the apron with hems or like guideways the same may have, at each side,
I claim:
1. A union suit having, at the rear, a. seat aperture, an apron for covering the same, and on each side of said aperture a vertical tape secured to the garment at top and bottom but free from connection with the gar ment at all other points, said apron having portions which engage the disconnected portions of said tapes and are vertically movable thereon.
2. A union suit having a seat aperture in the rear, straps or tapes on opposite sides of said aperture, and an apron adapted to cover said aperture, said apron being secured at the top to the back of the suit and having at the opposite edges guideways for the reception of said straps or tapes, whereby it is kept laterally stretched and guide as it is raised or lowered.
. In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH D. MORLEY.
