JACOB'MGGLURE, OF NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,732, dated July 4, 1871.
To all whom it may concern.- V p Y Be it known that I, JACOB MGGLURE, of
Y Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Knife and Pencil-Sharpener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is atop view of the large blade, showing thefile. 4 is a side view. Fig. 5 is a view through vthe line a' w. Fig. 6 is a central vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 7 is a view through the line yy.
My invention has relation to an improved method of combining a knife and pencil-sharpener or cone-cutter; and it consists in forming the necessary conical recess in or through the handle, or a prolongation thereof, in such a manner that it will not impair in the least the usefulness of the knife for ordinary purposes.
Referring' to the accompanying drawing, A represents a knife with the end of the handle somewhat extended, as at A', for the support of the sharpening-blade b, and in which the conical cavity b may be formed for the purpose of pressing the end of the pencil against the blade b and Fig. Y
giving it the proper shape. On one side of the -end of the handle is a small concave le, c, for the'purpose of sharpening the point of the pencil, or rather' the point of the lead. A small cone may be formed in connection with the concave file, which is a great advantage in sharpening the point of the pencil. A concave le is also formed on the back of one of the knife-blades, as at c. The end A', having the conical cavity, the blade, the concave le, or the conical cavity and le, and constituting the pencil-Sharpener, may be made in a separate piece and attached to the knife-portion in a suitable manner.
I claim as my invention- 1. rIhe cone-cutting recess b' formed in or through the handle of a pocket-knife in such a manner that the ends of the recess shall be even with thel sides or edges-of the handle, substantially as specified.
2. A knife-blade provided with a file-back, c', having a central tapering smooth space between the sli ghtly-inclined filing-surfaces, substantially as specified. e
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my naine in the presence of two witnessesf Y JACOB MCCLURE.
