P. DEVLIN, DECD.
M. 2.; DEVLIN. ADMlNlSTRATRlX. SHUTTER HINGE AND FASTENER.
. I APPLICATION FILED APR- 3,1915. 1,166,748.
enin.
' Tov all whom it may concern:
eBe it known thfat 1am the estatefof PETER DEVLIN', deceased, and
that I am a citizen of-the- United States,
residing at 1311 Easti Biddle street, in the city of Baltimoreand State of Maryland, and that saidDnv-LIN did; invent certain new 1 and useful Improvements in Shutter Hinges] and Fasteners, of which the following is a; specificat on. I
' 1 Theinvention relates toshutterfasteners. .The object of the invention 'is to pro vide a simple, cheap and efficient shutterfastener which canreadily'be attached to the window jamb and to the shuttenand'by' which the shutter can befastened 1n the" closed position;.in the'wide open position;
or inany pro-determined numberof intermediate Positions;
In the drawings:
tionof the parts shown in Fig"; 1, 'looking'in thedirection of the arrow .3.- f Fig.4 is 'a' side elevation oi the parts Shown in'Fig. 2,
looking'in the direction of the arrow: 1.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the locking plate. Fig. 6 is a perspective'view, partly in sec- 't ion, ofthe locking arm and pin; and Fig. 7
'te'r fastener attached'to a doorjamb andisa perspective View of the improved shutshutter, the shutter being held partly open. 8 represents one side of thewlndo-w amb to which one" member 9, ofthe hinge is. attached. The other member of the hinge .10 'isattached to the shutter, and the parts are pivoted together by a pintle 11. .The pintlell is rotatably mounted in knuckle 12 formed integrally with the hinge'member 1O and t-he knuckle 13 formed integrally with the hingemember 9. A pl'ate 14. provided i in the hinge member 10 to provide clearance around the plate 14. A slot 17 is provided with a hole for the reception of the pin 11 is mounted on saidpintle' llbetween the knuckles 12 and 13 A sl'ot vlfiis provided in the hinge member 9 of such a depth that the edges of slot 17 engage with the edges of slot '18 of the plate {1 1, aslshown inFigsql and i, and lock said plate in fiXed relation to said member 9-in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A tubular bearing); 19 is Figure 1 1' isa plan View. of-the improvedshutter fastener, attached I to the window jamb-and shutter, theshutter- ,beingrclosed. Fig. 2 .is a sectionalvie'w of "PET Rpnvmmnnonesnnfsv M ler E. DE LIN, iinivirni si nnrnl jr, OF'BA-LTVIMOBEQ I MARYLAND, wass sivon or ONE-HALF Torr. ARRY SEIPP, or eaten/meetings,
I ysnur'rnni rnen nn FesTEnnn-Q shutter 20 and; "revolubly mounted 1 in T this I SpecificationofLettersPacentI yaeg egdg g igi y .jepgi'ibatimlfiianemia,1.9;5. sea-1,110. ie'poe] I 1 driven snuglyinto a holeprovided in the bearing is a. pintle 21, provided with an oval v headT EZ; Anarm 2-3 is rigidly secureditb 1 the .p ntle 21 next to the head 22. Arm. '28] isprovided with abentfporti'on 2 1 having 'a notch;. 25 for a purpose hereinafter described; I A winged nut 261s rigidly secured to the I pintle 21 by acotter pin 27 which passes through the holes. provided in the said winged nut 26 and through a hole 28, prok. vided in pintle 21, as shown in Fig. -6. Y
-It is evident that when pintle 2l. is re volved, aeean readily be done byapplying the fingers to the wingednut 26, the arm 23 can bevibrated through smallnrc.
The pin 29seou-redin the shutter 20 ,prei vents a'movement farther toward the left than the'dotted position of thebent portion 2 1 shown in Fig". 3,
The extension 30 of the bentportio'n 24bearingagainst the plate 14 ter is closed as shownin Fig. 1 the bent'porprevents a moveme'nt farther toward. the n right of the bent part 24 than is'shown by the full lines in said Fig. 3. l/V-hen' the shut- 9 ition 24 will project intothe slot 31 ofplate 1 14:. When theshutter'isopen as shown'in'" 2 the bentportion 24 willproject into the slot 32 of the said plate' When the shutter is man intermediate position as ject -into one oftheslots 33 or 3 l.
, There may be any number of slots similar to 31, 32 33 and 34:,but only one slot similar to 18 is requir'ed. It is also to be noted that .shownin Fig. 7 the bent portion 2 1willpro- I slot 16 is cut somewhat deeper than slot17 I so that the hinge member 10 can pass freely around the plate 14. The-sides otth'e slot 17 in the hingemember '9 embrace thefiat sides of the plate 14.. e v The operation of the imp'ro'ved shutter fastener is as followsV hen the windowv is closed as shown in Fig. '1 the bent portion 24: projects intoslot and the shutter will belocked. If nowit is desired to open the shutter, the winged l mit 26, is lt'urnedein a o'lockwlse d1rect1on;'th1s moves the bent portion 24: to'the' position shown dotted in Fig. V .3, and the shutter can befreely moved to i V is moved in a counterclockwise direction to any position desired; then the winged nut 26 bring the bent portion 2at'into the position shown by the full lines in Fig; 3,-in which position it will project'into one of the. slots 33 or 34 and thus fasten the shutter.
What is claimed isr L-In a shutter fastener, the combination of hinge member,Provided with a slot and having a single knuckle provided With a nintle fixed therein, a slotted oiate mounted in the slot in the said hinsge member and held in fixed relation to said hinge inelnber, said slotted plate being mounted upon said pin and resting against the upper face of said knuckle, a second hinge member having 21' slot to clear said plate and lmating a single knuckle revolubly inountee on said pintle and resting against said slotted plate and it looking arm mounted to move With said second hinge member adapted to cooperate with the slots of said plate to look said hinge members in fixed relation.
The combination with o. hinge; of a locking plate in permanent engagement with one member thereof, a locking arm supported on s. pintle and cooperating with said locking plate to hold said hinge members in fixed relation, a stop on the end of said looking arm cooperating With said locking plate to limit the movement of said locking arm in one direetion. and 21-pin to limit the move ment of said locking arm in, the opposite direction. I
In testimony whereof I afiix inv signature.
MARY E. 'DEVLIN.
