Description

y 1963 E. JOHNSON, JR 3,
DOOR HINGE Filed Nov. 15. 1981 IN VEN TOR. (mm/w 5 Jam 50M (/0.
g Kw ATfQ/PNE/ United States Patent 3,096,537 DOOR HINGE Leonard Johnson, Jr., P.0. Box 114, Elkhart, Ind. Filed Nov. 13, 1961, Ser. No. 151,650
3 Claims. (Cl. 16-128).
The present invention relates to door hinges and more particularly to hinges for folding doors.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a door hinge which permits the doors to pivot through 180 degrees to provide full opening for the doorway.
-It is another object of the invention to provide a door hinge construction which is easily and accurately mountable without mortising and which mounts the door close to the jamb so that no extra trim or heading is required.
It is a further object of the invention to provide an improved bearing construction for a door hinge pivot which permits the door to swing easily and quietly and which permits the door to be easily removed.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a door hinge which is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will become readily apparent from the following detailed description taken in connection with the appended drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view showing the door hinges of the present invention pivotally mounting folding doors to a door jamb;
FIGURE 2 is a top View of the doors shown in FIG- URE 1 with the doors folded in their open position;
FIGURE 3 is an enlarged view of a door hinge taken in direction of 3-3 in FIGURE 2;
FIGURE 4 is a sectional view taken along line 44 of FIGURE 3; and
FIGURE 5 is a vertical sectional view through the hinge shown in FIGURE 2 with hinge members separated and one of the hinge members rotated 180 from the position shown in FIGURE 2.
Referring now to the drawings and more particularly to FIGURE 1, door hinges embodying the present invention are shown mounted on a door jamb 12 and a pair of folding doors 14 and 16.
Each door hinge 10 includes a pair of flat plates 18 land 20, a pair of plastic bearing members 22 and 24 and a pivot pin- 26. The two plates are identical as are the two bearing members. Their construction will be described with reference to plate 18 and bearing member 22. Corresponding parts of the other plate and bearing member will be designated by similar members primed. Plate 18 is provided with a longitudinal slot 28 which is diametrically opposed to slot 28 formed in plate 20. Plate 18 is also provided with a pair of holes 30 which are adopted to receive screws 32 for securing the plate along one edge thereof to the door jamb 12 or to the folding door 14.
Bearing member 22 is molded from a plastic such as nylon and is formed with an end bearing portion 34 from which extend parallel face portions 36 and 38 which are connected to a central recessed web 40 extending longitudinally inwardly from the end portion 34. The bearing member 22 is mounted on plate 18 with web 40 disposed in slot 28 and with the face portions 36 and 38 extending longitudinally on opposite sides of plate 18 in resilient gripping engagement therewith. Web 40 is longer than slot 28 so as to cause end portion 34 to extend a predetermined distance from edge 42 of plate 18. Web 40 is provided with a longitudinal bore 44 in which is secured pivot pin 26 which projects into bore 44 of bearing member 24. The inner edges 46 and 48 of face por- Fr ice P tions 36 and 38 extend parallel to the edge 50 of plate 1 to aid in properly locating the plate on the jamb or door.
Plate 18 is secured to door 14 by means of screws 32 with edge 46 of face portion 36 in engagement with outeredge of the door. Plate 20 is secured to jamb 12 by screws 32' withedge 48 of face portions 38' in engagement with the outer edge of the door. Plates 18 and 20 are vertically spaced through the bearing engagement of the projecting end portions 34 and 34'. The plates 18 and 20 are coplanar in a plane substantially perpendicular to door 14 when the door is in closed position.
The hinge plates 18 and 20 are relatively thin and thus permit the door to be mounted sufliciently close to the jamb without mortising so that no extra trim or heading is required to hide the gap. The hinge of the present invention, however, permits the door 14 to swing beyond any trim or molding around the jarnb to permit full degree opening. The bearing load is between the plastic end portions 34 and 34 to insure easy, quiet pivoting. The construction of the hinge is relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture and the parts are easily and quickly assembled.
While only one embodiment of my invention has been described it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and arrangements can be made to attain the objects of the invention without departing from the spirit of the invention.
