IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,661, dated July 4, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IRA ALLEN, of Manchester, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a bag-holder, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, Iwill now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a vertical section of Y my bag-holder.

The bed-frame for my bag-holder is composed `of two parallel beams, A, connected by two crossbars, BB, dovetailed into the beams. From each beam A rises a dovetailed standard, (l, and the two standards are connected at a suitable height by a cross-bar, l), dovetailed into the same. To the cross-bar l) is hinged a platform,E,which is held in nearly a perpeiulicular position by a strap, a, as shown 5 also, in a horizontal position. Gr represents the hopper, provided on its rear side with ears which are inserted in slots or mortises made for that purpose in the upper edge of the platform E, and a rod passed through this, hinging the hopper to the platform. In a recess on the front side of platform E is inserted a spring, I), which bears against the rear side of the hopper and forces the lower end of the same outward from the platform. Near the lower edge on the rear side of the hopper is a rod, d, which lits in a groove made in the platform when the hopper is brought close to the same; and corresponding with said rod, on the front side ofthe hopper, are hooks ee. Above the rod d, on the rear side of the hopper', is another rod, j', also fitting in a groove on the platform, and a short chain or link, t', from said rod j' passes through a mort-isc in the platform connecting with a hook or arm, k, extending upward from a rocking shaft, m, on the rear side of the platform. A lever, n., projects downward from said rocking shaft, and is held by any suitable catch, p. By releasing the lever n the spring b throws the hopper outward so that the bag can be drawn over its lower end and hooked onto the hooks e e and over the rod d. By now turning the lever n downward and fastening the same the bag is securely held by the rod d forcing the bag into the groove in the platform. In like manner the bag is readily released again when desired. p

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The hopper G, hinged at its upper rear side to the platform or back E, and provided at or near its lower rear side with link i, said link extending through the back E, all as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The hopper G, link i, rock-shaftm, provided with lever n and hook la, all combined and arranged substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
