To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ARTHUR H. l VoLrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna, and State of Pennsylvania, and DURWARD A. WOLFE, a citizen oi? tl e United States, residing at lValtham, in the county of Middlesex and State of iiiassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Casings tor Brushes and Analogous Toilet Articles; and we do declare the "following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

@111 invention relates broadly to improvements in the class of toilet articles and more oarticularly to a housing or casing for toilet rushes or analogous articles.

The object of the invention is to provide a very simple device of this character which may be easily and inexpensively marketed, and which when applied to use, will be very efficient in operation, means being provided whereby the brush or other articles is errposed for use when the cover of the housing is removed and whereby said brush is again housed when the cover is again applied.

With this main object in view. the invention resides in numerous novel features of construction and combination herein described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view or one form of brush casing constructed in accordance with my invention, the cover of the casing being disposed to active position; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the first step in opening the casing; Fig. 3 is yet another perspective showing the second step; Fig. l is a similar view with the brush exposed and ready for use; Fig. 5 is a central vertical. longitudinal section through the casing and showing the cover member and brush; and, Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section as seen along the plane of the line 66 of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a slightly modified form of construction; Fig. 8 is a perspective view showing the first step in exposing the brush for use; Fig. 9 is a similar view with the brush completely exposed; Figs. 10 and 11 are vertical longitudinal sections showing the brush respectively housed and exposed; Fig. 12 is a vertical transverse section as seenon the plane Specification of Letters Patent.

From F l toFig. 6, of these drawings, one form of the invention is shown, this form including an elongated lower casing section 1 which is open at its upper end as most clearly disclosed in 2, while its lower end is closed by a solid bottom 2. To the upper edge of the casing 1, and at one end thereof, a hinge 8 is provided, one of the knuckles of said hinge being carried bysaid casing while the remaining knuckle is carried by one leaf or section at of the hinge. This section. l. is, in turn, swiveled by a longitudinally extending pin 5 to a flange 6 which depends from one end of a cover plate 7 (see more particularly Figs. 3 and 5). The opposite end of this cover plate 7 is provided with an additional depending flange 6, while the longitudinal sides thereof are provided with other flanges 6.

The various flanges (3, 6 and 6 receive therebetween the back 8 of a brush, the bristles 9 of which normally depend into the casing 1, and for retaining the back o1 the brush in this position, the various flanges are provided with inwardly extending lips 9" which may be disposed at appropriate points.

The means just described is merely typical of one manner in which the brush back may be secured to the cover, but it will be evident that said back might itself constitute such a cover, in which case the hinge leaf 4 would be pivoted directly to the brush.

E'aaid casing is further equipped with a notch 11 in the end opposite the hinge 3, this notch serving as a keeper and being adapted to receive the shank 12 ot' a headed stud which projects longitudinally from the flange 6. the head 13 of said stud serving as means to force the cover member 7 and the brush carried thereby upwardly from the casing 1.

It will therefore be understood, that the notch acts as keeper and that some form of catch (not shown) might well be located at this point for effectively retaining the parts of the device in folded position.

In exposing the brush for use, the head 13 is pushed upwardly, thus rocking the entire cover member 6 around its hinge 3 to an extent at which it stands at right angles to, or at a greater angle to the casing 1 (see Fig. 2). Of course, this movement inverts the cover as is readily disclosed in this view, after which it is again turned to position its top uppermost (see Fig. 3) and is then again swung into the casing 1, thus again inverting said cover member and disposing its lower face and the brush upwardly as seen in Fig. l, in which position the article is ready to be applied to use.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection wth the accompanying drawings it will be seen that although the casing structure is shown as applied for the purpose of housing a brush, it could well be employed for other uses. It will furthermore be seen, that the salient features of the invention are a casing formed in two sections, and a combined hinge and swivel connecting immediately adjacent portions thereof. It will also be obvious that forms of hinges varying in construction from the form shown and described could well be used without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.

On Sheet 2 of the drawings, in Figs. 7 to 14 inclusive, the device is shown as constructed in a different manner, although the essential features previously mentioned are retained. In this form of the invention, the casing is shown as comprising a lower section 20, an upper or cover section 21, and a combined hinge and swivel 22 connecting the two sections at one end thereof.

The device 22 may be in the form shown in the drawings, or may be of any appropriate design. As illustrated, however, it is in the form of a section or plate 23 having outstanding ears 23 between which a. knuckle 24 is pivoted upon atransverse axis, the plate 23 being in turn pivoted at 25 upon a longitudinal axis, to one end of the lower section20, it being evident from the drawings that the knuckle 24 is carried by the upper or cover section 21.

Before proceeding further with the description, it may be well to here explain that the cover member 21 is adapted, by operation similar to that described in connection with the member 7 to be positioned either upon the top of the lower section 20 as seen, for instance, in Figs. 7 10 and 12, or to be swung beneath and to be applied upon the bottom of said lower section as seen in Figs. 9, 11 and 13, this movement being pos sible by the provision of the combined hinge and swivel as will be readily understood by those familiar with the art to which this invention relates. By reference to the drawings, it will be noted that, in this case, no brush is carried by the cover section, but that such a brush 30 is mounted for vertical sliding movement within the lower section 20, the back 31 of the brush being disposed downwardly and being clamped in a skeleton frame 32 (see more particularly Fig. 14). This frame 32 includes a longitudinal extensible and contractible strip 33 having upturned flanges 34 on its ends and a longitudinally extending stud 35 carried by one of said flanges. The frame further includes a transverse extensible strip 36 whose ends are provided with upstanding flanges 37 which in turn are equipped with laterally extending studs 38. As most clearly disclosed in Figs. 11, 12 and 13, the stud 35 projects through an upright slot 35 formed in one end wall of the section 20, while the studs 38 extend through and project beyond slots 38 formed in the upright side walls thereof. By and 38 are disposed for contact with the flange of the cover 21, it being therefore evident that disposition of said cover upon the upper side of the casing will move the skeleton frame 32 and the brush inwardly into the casing. while positioning of said cover upon the bottom of the casing will force the brush upwardly to active position.

may here explain that the skeleton frame 32 is contracted (by contracting its longitudinal and transverse strips) and is inserted in the section 20, after which these strips are again expanded to insert the pins or studs through their respective slots. The brush back is then positioned between the various flanges of the frame and the free ends of said flanges are crimped over said back as clearly disclosed in Figs. 10, 11, 12 and 13. \Vithout such construction, it would be a diflicult task to position the studs within their respective slots.

Although, in the above, two forms of the invention have been described, it will be obvious that we need not be limited to specific details of construction, otherwise than as set forth in the appended claims. In fact, the structure shown in Fig. 15 lies clearly within the scope of the present invention in which a casing C is shown as provided with a handle H, said casing be ing provided to normally retain a brush B, which may be considered as connected to said casing in the manner above described. Needless to say, this type of the device constitutes a hair brush.

lVe claim 1. A device of the class described comprising a casing open at its top, a vertically movable member adapted to be received in said casing or to project beyond the same, a cover this construction, the studs 35 for the casing and adapted to fit over either the top or the bottom thereof, and means operating in conjunction with said cover and said member to project the latter When the cover is placed on the bottom of the casing and to retract said member when the cover is placed on the top thereof.

2. A device of the class described comprising a casing open at its top, a vertically movable member adapted to be received in said casing or to project beyond the same, a cover for the casing and adapted to fit over either the top or the bottom thereof, and means carried by the member and dis posed in position to be struck by the cover when the latter is applied to either part of the casing for the purpose set forth.

3. A device of the class described comprising a casing open at its top and having a number of upright slots in its upright wall, a vertically movable member disposed in said casing and adapted to be projected therefrom, cover for the casing and adapted to be applied to either the top or the bottom thereof, and studs projecting outwardly from said member through the slot, said studs being adapted to be struck by the cover when the latter is applied to either the top or the bottom of the casing.

4. A device of the class described comprising a casing open at its top and having a plurality of upright slots in its upright side wall, a vertically movable member confined in said casing and adapted to be projected beyond the same, a skeleton frame likewise disposed in said casing and carrying said member, studs projecting laterally from said skeleton frame through the slots, and a cover adapted to be applied to either the top or the bottom of said casing, and to abut said studs, to shift the vertically movable member within the casing.

5. A device of the class described comprising a casing open at its top and having a number of upright slots in its upright side Walls, a skeleton frame disposed in said casing for vertical movement therein, said frame including longitudinal and transverse extensible strips, a member likewise disposed in said casing and clamped Within said skeleton frame, studs extending laterally from said frame through the slots, and a cover adapted to be applied to either the top or the bottom of said casing and to abut said studs to shift the skeleton frame and the member carried thereby within the casing.

6. A device of the class described comprising a casing section open at its top, an additional and invertible casing section applicable to either the top or bottom of the aforesaid section, and a combined hinge and swivel connecting immediately adjacent portions of the tWo sections.

7. A device of the class described comprising an elongated casing section open at its top, an invertible cover section adapted to close the open side of said casing section, and a combined hinge and swivel connecting one end of the cover section'vvith the adjacent end of the casing section for the purposes set forth.
