To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Aaron Mmnncrcn, a citizen of Austria-Hungary, at Lowell, in the county of Cochise and btate of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors; and I do declare the follo v to be a full, clear, and exact description 0 the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cuspidors and more particularly to closures therefor.

In the embodiment illustrated, a cuspidor C is shown of ordinary construction having the usual flared mouth M and contracted neck N although it may be of any dsired form and constructed of any suitable material, preferably enameled iron to render it sanitary.
The cover 1 is shown constructed to close the mouth of the cuspidor at its lower end into the contracted neck N thereof, said closure being'provided'withan annular flange 2 which rests on the'lower endof said mouth as is shown'clearly in -edgesofaplate4whichissecuredtosaid closure, said strips being rolled inwardly to form said bearing 3. a, tongue 5 projectsecured ing in advance of said bearing an to said cover 1 by any suitab e means, said tongue being constructed by the of the plate on opposite sides thereof to orm the strips from which the bearing 3 is composed. Thesestrips 3 when rolled are spaced laterally apart to receive a pintle 6, and arranged between them is a knuckle 7 having one end inclined rearwardly and secured to the upper face of the plate 4 and which is designed to form a stop or lock for a member hereinafter to be described. The plate 4 extends transversely across the cover 1 and the rear end thereof projects beyond said cover and is provided with a hinged een knuckle 8 adapted to be inserted betw cooperating knuckles 9 carried by the complementary hinge member 10 which is sechured to gm inner fzlce of the mouth M 05 tecuspior,apine1 connectingsai ge members by being passed through the knuckles thereof in the usual manner and whereby the cover is hingedly connected with the cuspidor mouth. The hinge member 10 which carries the knuckles 9 extends preferably to the outer edge of the mouth M and is provided at its opposite sides with outstanding apertured ears 12 arranged at right angles to the plate 10 and through which a pintle 13 extends. A lever 14 is carried b the pintle 13 and is here shown forme from a heavy metal rod bent intermediately of its ends with the side memhem 15 thereof arranged in contact, whereby the lever is strengthened throughout theare bent and extended forwardly to form parallel 16 provided at their free ends with eyes 17 through which the pintle 13 pass, said eyes bein here shown arranged 5 outside the cars 12 of the plate 10.
A coiled spring 18 is mounted on the pintle 13 and is shown constructed of a wire, the ends of which are coiled around the pintle, and between said coiled ends is a loop 19 which projectsforwardly and through which the lever 14 is designed to pass so that the tension of said spring is exerted to hold said lever normally downward in engagement with the cover 1 of the idor, the free end of said lever being esignedtobe with the stop'i'arranged at the front end of the plate 4 so that the top cover 1 is reliably locked in closed position when the lever is so arranged, a spring 18 tending to hold it in such engagement.

From the'above description, it will be obviousthat when the top is in raised position and the loop 20 with the catch 26, as shown in Fig. 3, the free end of the trip lever 30 will beposifioned in engagement with the floor or other support of the cuspidor so that the cuspidor, when til will cause this trip to move. inwardly an force the up end of the lever outwardly, thereby moving the catch 26 a suflicient distance to disengage it from the loop 20. Immediately this occurs, the spring presed lever 14 exerting its pressure on the top 1, will close said top into the position shown in Fig. 2.
I claim as my invention:
IL The combination with a cuspidor haviugaflaredmouth,aclosurehingedthereto, a catch member carried by said closurel a latch on said cuspidor for engagement with said catch when the closure is open, a lever fulcrumed intennediately of its ends on said cuspidor and pivotally connected at one end to said latch, a tri ger pivoted to the other end of said lever or engagement with the suggort of said cuspidor for releasing said la on the movement of the cuspidor, and

The combination with a cuspidor having a flared mouth, a closure hinged thereto, a catch member carried by said closure, a latch on said cuspidor for engagement with said catch when the closure is open, a lever fulcrumed at one end on said cuspidor with its free end, engaged with said closure, a spring mounted to exert its tension on said lever to cause it normally to engage said cover. means on said cover for engagement by said lever for locking the cover in closed position, and means for releasing said lever from said locking engagement.
4. The combination with a cuspidor having a flared mouth, a closure thereto, a catch-member carried by said closure, a latch on said cuspidor for engagement with said catch when the closure is open, a lever fulcrumed at one end on aid cuspidor with its free end engaged with said closure, a spring mounted to exert its tension on said lever to amuse it normally to engage said cover. means on said cover for engagement by said lever for locking the cover in closed position, and means for simultaneously releasing said lever and raising said cover.

latch on said closure for engagement with said catch loop, and a trip lever connected with said latch and operable on the movement of the cuspidor to release said closure.
