CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 501,428, dated July 11, 1893.

Beit known that I, EDGAR KLING, of Louisville, in the county of Jeerson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The invention relates to car couplings and is an improvement upon the coupling shown in the patent granted to me on the 19th day of July, 1892, No. 479,371; and its object is to provide an eihcient, accurate and simple coupling, and to provide improved uncoupling devices, and to prevent falling of the draw bar should it break from its fastenings.
The invention therefore consists in the novel construction of the draw bar,jaw, locking pin, and uncoupling rod and bracket substantially as hereinafter described an claimed.

The draw bar A resembles an ordinary twin jaw coupling draw bar. If desired its ears a, a, may be extended. farther forward than usual, and curved as shown so as to form a part of the knuckle or locking portion of the coupler, and enable the locking arm b of the jaw to be made shorter than usual thereby enabling a coupling to be made on a much sharper curve'than where the locking armsof the jaws are long, because the pivot pin of the jaw is of course farther forward, or in front of the mouth of draw bar.
The jaw B resembles an ordinary locking jaw having locking arm b and abevel or inoline b4 is formed at the junction of the arm and shank b as shown and hereinafter referred to, and the inner end of the shank is beveled as at b2 for a purpose hereinafter described.
The coupling pin C has its upper part C3 angular in cross section (preferably square) so that the pin cannot revolve in the openings. cut away as to leave it triangular in section, a shoulder c being formed at the junction of the triangular and square portions of the pin. An elongated vertical slot O is made in` the upper part and transversely of the pin through which slot passes freely a curved lever D one end of which is pivoted between lugs or ears a on top of the draw bar at one side of the pin opening.
A pull rod E is loosely connected to lever D'near its pivoted end and extends'to one side of the car passing through a retainer or guide loop f on a bracket Fattached to the car as indicated. The pull rod is bent upon itself and formed into a hand hold E outside the loop which prevents the rod pulling through the guide so that should the coupling with which the rod is connected become detached, or be drawn out unusually far, the pull rod cannot slip through the guide loop and will raise the pin, as by pulling on the rod E, lever D is swung to a substantially upright Iposition and lifts the pin as indicated in Fig.
2. The outer endESof lever E extends back through the loop when the lever D is lowered and the pin in position to lock the jaw, but when the rod is fully drawn out so as to lift lever D as shown in Fig. 2, the end F.3
The lower portion c of the pin is so catches against loop f and holds the lever D raised andv permits t-he coupling pin from dropping, which it is sometimes desirable to do when shifting cars on side tracks. The pivoted end of lever D is shouldered at d to form Va stop which limits its swinging movement by striking against the draw bar. rlhe bevel b2 on the end of shank b' of the swinging jaw when the shank swings inward, catches beneath shoulder cof the"pin'and rides the latter upward, thus raisingthe pin until the shank passes when it drops by gravity and thereby locks the jaw as is evident. The slot C being long allows the' pin to bev thus lifted without disturbing lever D';"thus the coupling can be effected automatically. lThe uncoupling is effected by pulling rod E thereby raising the lever D and pin as above stated.
The shank b has a projection or shoulder h3 on its rear edge, which (when the jaw is in locked position) engages a corresponding re- IOD cess a3 in the side of draw bar, and thereby thereof at the side of the pin opposite the end y of the shank when the latter is locked as shown in Fig. 2. the pin of strain, by transferring the lateral pressure from the shank direct through thez pin to the side of draw bar, so that the pin will not be bent.
A bevel or incline a is made at the junction of the lower ear @with the body of draw bar, this bevel extending from the top of ear upwardly to the top of the door of draw bar, and it is engaged by the oppositely beveled or rounded portion b4 of the jaw. The'bevelsi are so located that as the jaw closes it will be raised by the opposition of said bevels,v and will swing open by gravity into coupling position when released. Y
G designates a chain which 'is fastened toi one side of the draw bar, at one end, and toL the car at its-other end. This chain in con` junction with rod E constitutes a safety de` vice for suspending the draw 'bar in case it` should be broken loose from its fastening-s.: Should the draw bar be broke-n loose and pulled out of its supports, the rod `E 'beingg limited in its movement by hand hold E will, Araise lever D and uncouple the hook, andj then in conjunction with chain G'Will suspend f the bar above the track, and thus prevent thef danger incident to the falling of a ldraw bark 4on 'the track. f
The Vrod E may be attached to top or side? of the car. Two or more rods may beused to operate the same lever D.
Having Vthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire'to'secure by `Letters Patent thereon, is-
l. The combination of the draw bar and coupling pin with a lever pivoted at one end onthe draw bar and loosely connected `to the pin and adapted to lift the pin when turned upward on its pivot, substantially as and for the purpose speci'ed. l
2. The Vcombination of the draw bar and pin, with a curved lever pivoted at one end ondrawbar and slidably engaging 4the pini` at its other end, Aand a vpull rod for swingingi said leverupward, substantially as described. j
3. The `combination with the draw barand a locking pin having an elongated slot in its! upper end, of a 'lever playing through said slot and pivotally connected 4at one end "to"l said draw bar, substantially as described.
4. The combination with the draw bar and swinging jaw of a'locking pin adapted to be automatically raised by the Aarm of Vsaid jaw: 'when the Ajaw closeshaving an elongated slot` in its upper end, and a lever playingthrough 1 said slot and pivotally connected at one fend? `to said draw bar, substantially as described.

9. The combination o't' the drawba-r having forwardly curved ears, pin openings, and an interiorabutment at one side; with the locking'pin, andthe swinging jawpi-voted between said ears, substantially as described.
10. The combina-tion of thedraw'bar having forwardly curved ears, pin openings and an interior abutment; with the pinfthe swinging jaw pivoted between said ears, thecoacting opposed bevels `on Vthe (jaw and draw ba-r, and a zpivotedlever and -pulll rod `for lifting the pin, substantially as and `for the purpose described.
ll. The combinationof the draw bar and uncoupling lever pivoted thereon, with the guide loop f, `the pull `rod E pivotally connected to said lever and vextending through said loop, and Vhavingfa-hand hold and catch, Vsubstantially as and for the-purpose described.
12. The combination-of the Vdraw =bar the uncoupling `lever pivoted thereon, and the pull rod passing through a guide loop on the car pivotally connected to said lever, and having a hand hold on 4its outer end; with `the chain G, all constructed andarranged to operate substantially `as and forthe purpose set forth.
13. The combination of 'the draw bar, the
vertically movable pin, the *lever `playing through a slotin the pin, `and thepull rod E loosely connected Lto one end of the ibar and having a hand .hold E', and tho loopf, and `the chain G, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the'purpose described.
