ARTHUR J'. FILKINS, OF RIVERSIDE, ILLINOIS.
PORTABLE LOGOMOTIVE-DRAFTING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern: 7 7
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. FILKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverside, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Locomotive- Drafting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in portable locomotive drafting devices, and is fully described and explained in the specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation showing my improved device in its relation to a locomotive, and Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the device.
Referring to the drawings, 3 is a platform carried by a frame-work 4 and movable from place to place on wheels 5. Mounted on the platform is an exhaust fan or blower 6 driven by a motor 7. The intake or suction end of the fan is provided with an elbow 8 to which is pivoted a pipe 9 adapted to be raised and lowered by means of a rope 10 running over a pulley 11 carried by an upwardly projecting part 12 of the frame. The pipe 9 has at its upper end an elbow 13 which flares at its lower end and is provided on its rear side with a plate 14 adaptedto cooperate with the front part of the flaring elbow to afi'ord an inward conical surface to contact with and fit tightly over the stack of a locomotive. The shape of the elbow is such that a fairly tight fit will be given even though there be a considerable variation in the relative position of the portable frame and locomotive, although it will be understood that in operation this portable frame should be put in substantially the position illustrated.
The exhaust end of the blower or fan is connected to a pipe 15 over which is telescoped a pipe 15 which can be more or less extended through the mediumof a rope 17 running over a pulley 18. The pipe 16 is of sufficient extent to run well up into the smoke-jacks commonly provided in roundhouses to receive the discharge from the 10- comotives.
The present device is used in a roundhouse for the purpose of assisting in firing a locomotive. When it is desired to lire any given locomotive, the device is brought up alongside, the intake-pipe of the fan ad- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec, 2%, 19150 Application filed July 19, 1915. Serial No. 40,647.
justed to fit with its flaring elbow over the smoke-stack and the exhaust-pipe of the fan 1s adjusted to extend up into the smoke gach. '.l he fan then starts to operate, pro ducing 1n the locomotive the desired draft so that the firing takes place quickly and without inconvenience, and all the prodnets of combustion are passed through the fan and discharged into the smoke-jack which is entirely capable of handling them in the ordinary way. its soon as the locomotive has a suihcient pressure of steam in ts boiler that the forced draft can be used in the ordinary way, the present device is disconnected and moved to another locomotive which requires firing.
It will be observed that the present dev ce is exceedingly simple in its construct1on, that it can readily be moved from place to place so as to operate on a succession of locomotives, and that in this way at the very lowest expense it is possible-to secure the desirable results of artificial suction in firing.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of the construction herein shown, and I do not intend to limit myself thereto, except as pointed out in the following claims in which it is my intention to claim all the novelty inherent in the device as broadly as is permitted by the state of the art. 4
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A. portable device for drafting locomotives when firing the same, comprising a platform movable from placeto place, a power-driven fan thereon, means to connect the intake of the fan to the front end a of the locomotive, and means to lead the exhaust from the fan into the smoke-jack of the roundhouse.
2. A portable device for drafting locomotives when firing the same, comprising a platform movable from place to place, a power-driven tan thereon, means to connect the intake of the fan to the smokestack of the locomotive, and means to lead the exlid haust from the fan into the smoke-jack of the roundhouse.
ower-driven fan thereon a i e havin a pivotal connection with the intake of the tan and adapted to swing down upon the smoke-stack of the locomotive, and means to lead the exhaust from the fan into. the
smoke-jack of the roundhouse.
4. A. portable device for drafting locomotives when firing the same, comprising a platform movable from place to place, a power-driven fan thereon, means to con nect the intake of the fan to the smokestack of the locomotive and a telescoping pipe attached to the fan to lead the exhaust therefrom into the smoke-jack of the roundhouse.
5. A portable device for drafting locomotives when firing the same, comprising a platform movable from place 'to'place, a power-driven fan thereon, a pipe having pivotal connection with the inta e of the fan and adapted to swing down upon the smoke-stack of the locomotive, and a telescopic pipe attached to the same to lead the exhaust therefrom into the smoke-jack.
