To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD KIRBY Bo'r- '.rLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county-of Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding Sales-Books, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

y present invention relates to manifolding sales books, and particularly to the holders, havin for its object to provide a simple and pract1cal pad-holding means, cheap to manufacture and durable in construction. The particular embodiment which l show here comprises a back or cover for the book, having sheet-metal clips attached thereto, by means of which the books or pads may be conveniently secured to the cover or released therefrom. The clips are preferably two in number, disposed at different places on the cover so that they may be arranged to take books or pads of different sizes as desired.

In the accompanying drawing, wherein is illustrated one of various possible embodiments of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing such portions of a sales book holder as are necessary to understand one embodiment of the present invention; and Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the complete device in normal operative position.

Referring now in detail to the'J accompanying drawing, and more particularly to Fig. 2, there is denoted at 1 the bottom cover of a sales book holder to which the top cover 2 is connected along one of its longitudinal edges by a flexible hinge 3. At the opposite longitudinal edge of the bottom cover 1 is a second flexible hinge'4 for connecting an auxiliary back or support 5 therewith. This back or support 5 carries a pad for receiving the inscription, the pad comprising a plurality of sets of-original and duplicate leaves, 6 and 7 respectively. Said pad is removably secured to the support 5 by means of a spring clamp 5 having teeth 5 adapted to bear on the top thereof. A double-faced carbon sheet 8 is interposed therebetween for transmitting the inscription to the duplicate leaf, and between the carbon sheet and the original leaf is interposed a translucent or tissue leaf carried by a trlphcate pad 10, having an attaching or cover portion 9, secured to the bottom cover of the holder. It will thus be seen that the t1ssue leaf 11 between the original and carbon sheet receives the inscription on its under side, yet, being of tissue, permits the mscriptlon to be easily read. After completlng the transaction the auxiliary support 5 1s swung about the hinge 4, which permits the inscribed tissue to rest upon the upper surface of the bottom cover l, as indicated at 12. In this manner a complete record of all of the transactions is conveniently filed away.

Referring now to Fig. 1, in which the holding means for the triplicate pad 10 is more clearly shown, it will be noted that this means comprises two resilient sheet metal clips 13 and 14 secured by means of rivets l5 near the opposite ends and adjacent one of the longitudinal sides of the bottom cover 1. The clip 13 is made of sheet metal, and comprises a turned back portion 16., Both the base portion 13 and this turned back portion are provided with flanges 17 and 18, respectively, extending to a height substantially equal to the height of the center portion of the original and duplicate pad. This clip not only provides an abutment to prevent movement of the pad held thereby, but also so positions the triplicate leaf inA usel that it lies substantially flat between and completely registers with the leaves of the original and duplicate pad, as shown. The base of the upper clip 14 is also provided with an upper or turned-back portion 20 which with the base portion is provided with up-turned flanges 21 and 22 respectively along its outer side extending to a height substantially equal to the height of the turned up portions 17 and 18 and for the same purpose; the flanges form between them a groove in which, as presently to be described, is disposed a part of the back of the auxiliary pad carrying the tissue leaves. The upper portion 20 of the clip is provided with a nipping ridge 23 firmly clamping the cover in place. This cover is shown in dotted lines in normal operative position, and is provided with a scored line 24 along which the leaves of the pad are stitched as well as a second scored line 25 closely adjacent thereto, permitting the cover to conform more readily to the angle of the clips, the portion between the lines 24 and 25 being inserted in the groove between the iianges, as above described. By having the two clips as shown, it will be seen that they may be positioned upon the cover to accommodate a longer or shorter pad as desired. The material saving in metal used greatly decreases the cost of manufacture, as well as reduces the weight of the book.

The manner of removin or replacing a book in a holder of this Irind is substantially as follows: It will be noted that the upper clip 14 is considerably longer than the forward clip 13, and the turned over edges of the two clips are spaced' apart farther than the length of the book. Thus when removing the book the holder is laid open on the table as in Fig. 1 and the lower cover 9 is grasped with one hand and the leaves and upper cover are grasped with the other and the entire book moved irst upwardly away .from the operator into the position shown by the dot-dash line 26. As the top edge of the book engages the fold in the clip 14, the lower edge of the cover may then be raised out of engagement with the turned over portion 16 and the movement of the book is reversed until the upper portion of the cover slides out from under the turned over portion 2O of the clip 14. When replacing a book the above successive operations are, of course, reversed. In this manner the books may be rapidly exchanged and renewed when desired.

It will thus be seen that the present invention provides a simple and practical sales book holder adapted to accomplish, among others, all of the objects and advantags above set forth.

aving described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a sales-book, a cover, a pad consisting of suitable leaves and a back, and means for detachably securing the pad to the cover; such means comprising metal clips having upperand lower parts provided vwith upturned -flanges forming between them a groove in which a part of the back of the pad is disposed.

2. In a sales-book, a cover, a pad consisting of` suitable leaves and a back, and means for detachably securing the pad to the cover; such means comprising metal clips having upper and lower parts, the lower parts attached to the cover, and the upper parts spaced above them, and both parts being provided with up-turned flanges forming between them a groove; the back of the pad being disposed in the groove and in the space between the parts, so that it is held against lateral and vertical displacement.

3. In a sales-book, a cover, a pad of suitable leaves and a back, and means for departs pressed together by the resilience of the metal.

4. In a device of the character described,

in combination, a main support, an auxiliary support hinged thereto, a pad mounted upon said auxiliary support and resting above the main support when in operative position, and a plurality of sheet metal clips secured to said main support, 'one of said clips comprising an inwardly extending upper member, a lower member, a iiange thereon extending at right angles to said main support and a second flange extending from said inwardly extending upper member and with said first flange forming vertical retaining walls having a groove between them.

5. In a device of the character described, in combination, a main support, an auxiliary support hinged thereto, a pad mounted upon said auxiliary support and resting above the main support when in operative position, a plurality of sheet metal clips secured to said main support, yone of said clips comprising an inwardly extending upper member, a flange extending at right angles to said main support and a second {iange extending from said inwardly extending upper member to coperate with said first flange to form vertical retaining walls having a groove between them, and a second pad comprising a part disposed between the upper and lower members to restrict longitudinal movement of said pad and also engaging the groove between the vertical retaining walls to restrict transverse movement thereof.

6. In a device of the character described, in combination, a main' support, an auxiliary support hinged thereto, a pad carrying a carbon sheet mounted upon said auxiliary support and resting above the main support when in operative position, a second pad having a cover portion, means on said main support adapted to hold the pad in place, said means comprising a sheet metal clip secured to the forward part of the support and adjacent the edge opposite the hinged connection of the auxiliary support adapted to receive said second mentioned pad by an endwise movement thereof, and means adapted to prevent an endwise movement of the pad in the opposite direction after the book is in place.

7 In a device of the character described, in combination, a main support, an auxiliary support hinged thereto, a pad carrying a carbon sheet mounted upon said auxiliary support and resting above the main support when in operative position, a second pad having a cover portion, means on the forward part of said main support adapted to hold the pad in place comprising a sheet metal clip adapted to receive said second mentioned pad, and means adapted to prevent movement of the book after the book is in place, said last mentioned means Comprising a clip of sheet metal bent back upon itself.

8. In a device of the character described, in combination, a main support, an auxiliary support hinged thereto, a pad carrying a carbon sheet ,mounted upon said auxiliary support and resting above the main support when in operative position, a second pad having a cover portion, means on said main support adapted to hold the pad in place comprising a sheet metal Clip secured to the support and adjacent the edge opposite the hinged connection of the auxiliary support, said last mentioned means comprising a clip of sheet metal bent back upon itself, both of saidrclips having upwardly turned flanges parallel and adjacent the outer edge of the support adapted to hold the leaves of the second mentioned pad substantially opposite the middle of the first mentioned pad when in normal operative position.
