GUARD DEVICE FOR WINDOWS.
memes.
guard device -means of such construction that the same will form a barrier across the window space exposed by a raised window-sash to thus form a guard against the falling of a person from the window.
Another object is to provide the barrier means of such construction that it is adjustable; and capable of being locked in guarding position by means operated through the medium of the window-sash.
Still another object is to provide means whereby barrier means for the window is afforded while a sash is in open position and whereby the barrier means may be shifted so as not to obstruct the window space when the window-sashes are closed.
A further object of the invention is to provide means forming part of the barrier means and accessory parts to lock a windowsash in closed position upon the barrier means being raised while the sash is in closed position.
Other objects, mostly minor in nature, and advantages will appear hereinafter from the description following taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein;
Figure 1 is a view mostly in elevation, illustrating my improved device in connection with a window-frame and sash; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line l4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, but showing the sash raised to some extent and the barrier locking means adjusted; and Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view showing the parts adapted to lock the window-sash in closed position. Fig. 7 is a view in elevation of the locking means shown in sec tion in Fig. 6.
Throughout the views of the drawings, like reference characters denote like or similar parts.

Serial No. 767,396.
Referring specifically to the drawings, a window-sash 1 is shown as mounted in a window-frame of which 2 designates the sill and 3 the side rails. Across the window space covered by the sash are adapted to extend at suitable times, barrier means which may comprise any suitable number of bars 41. These bars at are pivoted to the windowframe as through the medium of brackets 5 attached thereto and supporting pivot members 6 on which the bars are mounted directly or indirectly. One of the bars 4: is shown as mounted indirectly to its pivot 6 by means of a hinge leaf 7 having a socket suitably receiving the attached bar 4:. This leaf 7 is provided with a hug 8 having an inner arcuate wall, and which lug is adapted to cooperate for a purpose hereinafter set forth, with a lug 9 having an outer arcuate face, and which lug 9-is carried by a bracket 10 suitably fastened to the window-sash, as to one side rail thereof. Of course these latter parts may be employed in connection with each rail 5% employed, but it is only essential that the same be used in connection with one rail. The bars i are adapted for vertical shifting movement on the pivots 6 and when extending across the window space rest in sockets provided in suitable brackets 11. Preferably the bars are connected through the medium of a suitable link 12 so that they may be actuated simultaneously through. actuation of a single bar.
To the side rail of the window-fra1ne to which the brackets 11 are attached, is also attached a plate 13 having pivoted thereto by means of a pin 14:, a latch member 15. A latch shifting member 16 is also pivoted to plate 13 and directly on a pin 17. The latch and latch shifting member are arranged so as to extend in substantial alineinent when the window-sash is closed, and to this end the preponderance of weight of the shifting member and latch member is below the pivot points thereof. These members also extend across or overlap at their adjacent ends and are preferably notched or reduced as shown, to facilitate their assuming an alined position. The latch shifting member 16 is preferably provided with an offset portion or projection 18 extending toward the windowsash 1. The window-sash or window-sash member 1 is provided with a cam face 19 adapted to cooperate with the lug l8 and this face is specifically provided on an elongated plate 20 suitably fastened to the sash 1.
Then the sash 1 is in lowermost position, the latch and its shifting member, due to the preponderance of weight below their pivots, are maintained insubstantial alinement, as best seen in Fig. 4:. When the sash is in lowermost position, also shown insaid figure, the cam face 19 is below the lug 18. IV hen the sash is raised, the cam face 19 acts against the lug 18 causing the same to tilt, and due to its overlapping the latch 15 also causes said latch 15 to tilt. In this tilted position the latch extends across the upper bar at and thus will prevent vertical movement thereof or movement tending to disengage it from its keeper bracket 11. After the parts are thus shifted, they are maintained in this position while the sash is raised by engagement with the outer or exposed face of the plate 20. The latch and other parts shifted as just described, is best illustrated in Fig. 5. It will thus be seen that when the sash is raised, the bars 14 are positively locked across the window space exposed by the sash and will effectively pre vent anyone falling from the window, such a feature being especially desirable when the sill is arranged low with respect to the floor.
When the sash 1 is in its lowest position, the parts as stated, are in the position shown in Fig. 4. In this position of course, the bars 4. are not positively locked inasmuch as latch 15 has moved from across the path or above the upper bar a. While in this position the bars 4: can be and preferably are moved vertically to a substantially vertical position, which brings the lug 8 over the lug 9, which owing to the fact that lug 9 is carried by the movable sash, will lock the sash against rising until the bars are again returned to horizontal position. If desired of course, suitable means may be provided for positively maintaining the bars f in raised position. However, in the construction shown, the lugs 8 and 9 are arranged so as to engage each other with considerable friction which is suliicient to maintain the bars raised. In Fig. 6 the feature. of the lugs 8 and 9 are in engagement, is best shown.
Inasmuch as the bars at should be adj usted or operated quite frequently, it is de sirable that the same as a general. rule be located interior of the window-frame.
Changes in the details of construction of the device illustrated and described, may of course be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and hence are reserved providing they fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a window-frame and sash, barrier means for said frame, a latch, a shifting member for said latch, and means to shift said'member through the medium of said sash.
2. In combination with a window-frame and a sash member, barrier means for said frame, a latch, a shifting member for said latch, one of said members provided with a cam face operable against the. other to shift said shifting member.
3. In combination with awindow-frame and sash, a barrier member pivoted on said frame, akeeper member therefor on said frame, a latch movable over said keeper member, a shifting member for said latch, and a projecting member on said sash operable against said shifting member.
a. In combination with a window-frame and sash, a barrier member pivoted to said frame, a keeper member for said barrier member, a pivoted latchmovable over said keeper member, a pivoted shifting member for said latch member provided with a projection, said sash provided with a cam'face operable against said projection to shift said shifting member.
5. In combination with a window-frame and sash, a barrier member pivoted'to said frame,-a'bracket on said frame for said bar rie'r member, a plate fastened to saidframe, a latch member pivoted on said plate movable to extend over said barrier member and bracket, a latch shifting member pivoted on said plate provided with a'projection, and a plate on said sash provided with a cam face operable against said projection.
(3. In combination with a window-frame and sash, a lug provided on said sash, a pivoted member provided on said frame, said pivoted member provided with a lug and shiftable to position its lug over said lug.
