Specification o Letters yatent.
'To ali whom it may concern."
Be it known that l, Gennaio B. lviANssAoH, a citizen of the United States, Yand resident of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of' Massachusetts, have invented certain new/and useful improvements in innersoles, oi which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates 4to an inner sole for Welted shoes, composed of a body layer usually of leather and a facing layer usually of canvas cemented to one side of and having a loop-like molded hollow rib or Wale 'forming a lip to en-y gage the inseam'stitches, which unite the Welt and upper tothe inner sole.
One object of the invention is to laterally stiften the said lip by corrugating one so the lip is buttressed against distortion or bending under lateral ressure against it.
Another object of the invention is to render the toe portions of the facing layer and lip impervious to'hot vapor used for softening parts oi a shoe upper associated with the inner sole, and thus prevent the softening of the toe portion of thelip during the to the toe ca and other parts of the upper While said parts are partly assembled before the operation of lasting. 4,
To these ends the invention consists in the improvements which l Will now proceed to describe and claim.
Gf the accompanying drawings forminga part of this specification: Figure 1 represents a plan viewof an inner. sole embodying'my invention; Fig.` 2 represents a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. -3 represents a sec-. tion on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 represents a section on line --fl of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of a section cut from the inner sole along `the lines --w and p 1j of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 represents a frag; mentary side vieW showing a different embodiment of the invention; Fig. 7 represents a section on line 7-7 of Fig. 6; Fig. 8 represents a section on line 8-8 of Fig. 6.
The same reference characters indicate the same or similar parts in all the views.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2, '3 and 4 of vthe drawings, l2 represents a body layer preferably of leather, and 13 represents a facing layer preferably of canvas cemented to one side of the body layer. The facing layer Aare thus corrugated, the bosses torno 'tresses which 4against the/toe portion. of
. the lip and preferably at the cute;
and a facing layer having a molt.
is molded prior to its attachment to body layer, to *forni a loopiilre rib fr iv.. 14, which in the completed stitch-engaging lip, suitable moidi being employed toast on a narrow el portion of said layer and force said po outwardly from one side ot the plane layer. Said dies are formed to ethe sides ofthe lip by imparting ternating recessed portions la 'in In the embodiment oi' the invent' by Figs. l to 5 inclusive., both sides o revent the lip :tr sidewise in either direction. therefore enabled; to. stand up o4 sure tending to crush ordis-tort In the embodiment shown by and 8, the lip 144i is provided vit :il ing recesses 14:02' and 1.40" at its only, its outer side being Without cov.L tions. y The bosses are lioilovv, .so surfaces are adapted to be forced by the inseam stitches engaged Witl's by a Welt sewing or stitching' machine..
To prevent the toe portion of the in layer and the curved. toe portion oi tbe n from being displaced inwardly by the sure of the -toe Wipers of a lasting r .z
the lip,'i i the facing and body layers by a curved l of stitches 17 extending beside the b thereof, as shown by Figs. .i and El.
A coatinglS of shellac or other suits material indicated by the Fig. 1 and the relatively heavy 4"ank l in Fig. 2 is applied to the toc y the facing layer and lip to prnl f. .i 1- toning of the lip by vapor. llt new ons tomary to place the inner sole and upper on. a last, tlietoe portion ori the upper provided with an Vunlasted toe cap, and 'to insert the toe portions of the last and. upper into a'casing containing hot vapor for tbe purpose of softening the toe cap betere ing the toe portion of the upper. Ehe coatl ing 18 of'a material which re. softening action of the vapor, so that it pre Ii vents the softening of the toe portion ci tine lip. v
Having described my invention 1. An inner sole composed oi a claim:
v'inseam stitchvengaging lip, l'embossed' to form corrugations laterally said lip being "tifening the lip. i
l 2. :An inner sole composed of a body layer and w'fa'oingrllayer having a molded hollow inseam s t'itc -e'n'gaging lip, said lip includ- 1 ing'alternating recessed portions and bosses .whereby of the facing layer and the toe portion ot the lip being provided with a vapor-resisting coating to prevent softening of said por" tions by vapor employed to soften an associated portion of an upper.
ln testimony whereof have affixed my i signature, in presence o1 two witnesses.
CONRAD B. MANSBACH.
