To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HORACE L. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dat-4 ing-Stamps, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to dating stamps, of the classshown, described and claimed in U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,086,851 and 1,086,852, granted February 10, 1914:,y and particularly to the endless carbon printing tape used in stamps of this class and means for operating the, same, and the object thereof is to provide improved means of which the pivoted arm of the stamp forms a part for reversing the movement of said tape at intervals.
In my improvement the printing tape consists of a carbon strip or sheet connected with two spools and adapted to be wound from one spool onto the other in the operation of the stamp, and the invention described andclaimed herein consists of improved means for automatically reversing the movement of the tape.
Theinvention is fully disclosed in the following speciiication, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side View ofmy improved dating stamp with parts omitted; Fig. 2 a sectional plan view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a transverse vertical sectional View on'the line 3-3 of Fig. 2
and on an enlarged scale; Fig. 4 a vertical sectional view on the .line 4-4 of Fig. 6; Fig. 5 a View similar to Fig. 4 but showing the parts in a dierent position; Fig. 6 a sectional plan View of the constructions shown in Figs. 4 and 5; and, Fig. 7a view similar to Fig. 4 but showing a modification.
In the drawing forming part of this speciication, I have shown at a the casing and at b the main pivoted operating arm of a dating stamp similar to that described in the patents hereinbefore referred to, and these parts including the spring b2 by which the arm b is operated in one direction and of the casing a are two transversely arranged.

Mounted on the spindles c and d and adjacent to the heads e3 and f3 of the spools e vand f and rotatable on said spindles are disks g and it having upwardly directed arms g2 and h2 connected by a horizontal link bar 'i on which is rotatably mounted a roller 2 and the outer faces of the disks g and h are provided with transverse ribs g3 and h3. The casing a of the stamp is provided with side members a2 and front and rear members a3, and the side members a2 are provided with inwardly directed bosses aL through which the spindles c and cl of the spools e and f pass, and the bosses a4 of the side a2 adjacent to the heads e3 and f3 of the spools e and f are provided with transverse recesses a5 adapted to receive the ribs g3 and k3 of the disks g and L.
Rotatably mounted on the end portion of the spindles c and d of the spools e and f opposite the head portions e3 and f3 of said spools are intermeshing gears j and 7c provided with outwardly directed hubs j and k2 and rigidly mounted on the hub 7a2 of the gear 7c is a ratchet m, and loosely mounted yon the hub k2 between the ratchet m and pivot pin m3 on which is mounted a pawl m4 which operates in connection with the ratchet m.
The gears y' and c are provided on their inner faces with clutch members n and 0, and the adjacent ends of the core pieces e2 and f2 of the spools e and f are provided caf with corresponding clutch members n2 and o2, and said adjacent ends of the core pieces e2 and f2 of the spools e and f are provided with central recesses p in which are mounted springs p2 which bear on the gears j and lc. In the construction shown the recesses p and springs p2 are shown only in the spool f but it will be understood that the' spools e and f are both the same in this particular.
Mounted in the top portions of the casing forwardly and backwardly of the type disks b3 are guide rollers r and 112, and mounted forwardly of and below said guide rollers is another guide roller 1-3 and dlrectly beneath the type disk b3 is another guide roller r4, and between the guide rollers r3 and r4 is a supplemental guide roller r, and in the use of this stamp the printing tape or ribbon s is mounted on the guide rollers 1', r2, r3, 1'* and 1'5, or in connection therewith, as shown in Fig. 1, and the ends of said printing tape are connected with the spools e and f.
. VIn the construction shown in Figs. l, 2, 3,
4, and 6, the printing tape is shown .wound on the spool e and ready to bere-wound on the spool f, as shown in Fig. 5. With the parts in this position the roller 2 carried by the link bar z' bears on the spool e on which the printing tape is fully wound, and in this position the rib g3 on the disk g is thrown into the corresponding recess a5, while the rib h3 on.the disk 7L is thrown out of the corresponding recess a5,l asy clearly shown in cessively depressed, as in the operation of the stamp, the spool f will be rotated step by step and the tape s will be wound on said spool step by step until all the tape is withdrawn from the spool e and wound on the spool j", as shown in Fig. 5, and in this operation the position of the link bar d and roller'z'2 are reversed, and the roller 2 bears on the spool f, or the tape wound thereon, and the position of the parts gand g3 and the parts h and 12,3 are also reversed as are also the position of the clutch members m and m2 and o and o2, and it must be understood that the springs p2 in the spools e and f are instrumental in producing these operations, as these springs move the spools e and f longitudinally on the spindles c and d in one direction, and when the disks g and il, are in proper position the ribs g3 and la. are forced into the corresponding recesses a,
and these parts also, as will be seen, l `peratev as clutches.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that when the printing tape is being wound on one spool the other rotates freely on its spindle, and it is the operation of the roller 2, the link bar z' and the disks g and la, that reverses the movement of the tape each time that it is fully wound on one of the spools, and this operation begins the rewinding of said tape onto the other spool.
As in the patents hereinbefore referred to the type disks b3 are employed for printing the year, .the month, and the dayof the month, and name signature and other plates may be employed in the space or spaces t in the top of the casing and at the sides of the type disks b? as in said patents.
In the construction shown in Fig. 7 the wheel or roller 2 is made in the form of an eccentric or cam, and with this construction the tripping movement lwhich reverses the direction of the movement of the tape, or'the direction of the rotation of the spools will be effected quicker than with the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and other changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention, or
sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what ters Patent, is l 1. A dating stamp of the class described, comprising a casing, a main pivoted operating arm, two spindles mounted in the bottom portion of said casing below said arm, spools mounted on said spindles and movable longitudinally thereof, intermeshmg gears mounted on said spindles adjacent to one end of said spools, said gears and said spools being provided with clutch members,
springs for throwing said clutch members out of engagement,.and means whereby each operation of said arm will rotate one of said spools in one direction.
2. A dating stamp of the class described,
comprising a casing, a main pivoted operatmg arm', two spindles mounted in the bottomv portion of said casing below said arm, spools mounted on .said spindles and mpvable longitudinally thereof, intermeshmg gears mounted on said spindles adjacent to one end of said spools, said gears and said spools being provided with clutch members, springs for throwing said c lntchmembers out of engagement, means whereby each operation of said arm will rotate one o'f said spools in one direction, and other means whereby the movement of said spools will be reversed., at intervals. v
3. In a dating stamp of the class described, a casing provided with a main operating arm and two parallel spindles, spools mounted on said spindles and movable longitudinally thereon and provided at one end with clutch members, intermeshingl gears mounted on said spools and provided with corresponding clutch members, sprin s for moving said spools so as to throw sud clutch members out of engagement, and means whereby the operation of the main arm will rotate one of said spools.
4. In a dating stamp of the class described, a casing provided with a main operating arm and two parallel spindles, spools mounted on said spindles and movable longitudinally thereon and provided at one end with clutch members, intermeshing gears mounted on said spools and provided with corresponding clutch members, springs for moving said spools so as to throw said clutch members out of engagement, means whereby the operation of the main `arm will rotate one of said spools, and other means for reversing the operation of said spools at intervals.
5. In a dating stamp of the class de-v scribed, a casing provided with a main operating arm and two parallel spindles, spools mounted on said spindles and movable longitudinally thereon and provided at one end With,l clutch members, intermeshing gears mounted on said spools and provided with corresponding clutch members, springs for moving said spools so as to throw said clutch members out of engagement, means whereby the operation of the main arm will rotate one of said spools in one direction, and other means operating in connection with a printing tape Wound on one of said spools to reverse the movement thereof.
