To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AMos H. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Bronx, city of New York, county of Bronx, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Numbering-Heads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to numbering heads and more particularly to a type thereof wherein the digit wheels are positively locked against movement excepting at those intervals when they are to be rotated in transferring from a wheel of one denomination to the wheel or wheels of succeeding denominations.
Numbering heads of the character to which my invention relates, comprise a se quence of digit wheels adapted to be successively actuated in arithmetical progression, the carrying operation, or transferring, from a wheel of one denomination to the wheel of the next denomination occurring automatically at intervals as determined by the actuation of the machine. The digit wheels are actuated by means of a vibratory member and means are provided whereby each of the wheels is held against movement in one direction during one movement of said actuating mechanism while being free to turn in the other direction with said mechanism. In numbering heads of this character, particularly when actuated at high speeds, there is a tendency of adjacent wheels to bind by reason of the accumulation of inkbetween the wheels, and the main object of the invention is to provide means whereby all of the wheels except those which must be turned in the normal actuation of the machine, will be locked against movement in either direction and thus prevent accidental skipping of the machine. l
In a machine made in accordance with my invention, each of the digit wheels of a denomination above the units wheel, is normally locked against movement in either direction, means being provided whereby the locking mechanism for each wheel will be rendered inoperative when said wheel is to be turned. The controlling means for this locking mechanism is actuated from the wheel of next lower denomination thus insuring the timely release thereof. I also provide means whereby all of the wheels may be simultaneously released to facilitate the setting of the head. The construction of the head is such that my invention may be applied thereto without increasing its dimensions, so that the invention may be applied to type high numbering heads for use in power driven machines without modification of the machine. in numbering heads of this type, each of the digit wheels is ordinarily provided with a ratchet wheel cooperating with which is a holding pawl having the two-fold function of alining the wheels and preventing a turning movement thereof during one movement of the actuating means. By providing means acting upon each of said pawls which will prevent its movement by its ratchet wheel, said ratchet wheel and also its digit wheel, may be positively .locked against movement except at such times when the wheel acting upon said pawl is made inoperative with relation thereto. The construction and arrangement of the means acting upon the pawls are such that each of them, acting upon the pawl of one wheel, will be actuated to release said pawl when the adjacent wheel has the character 9 in the printing position. The said means are so constructed as not to interfere with the pawl acting upon the ratchet wheel which actuates it, thus permitting the grouping of a pawl acting upon the ratchet of a digit wheel, and the means for controlling the pawl of the adjoining wheel, about the same ratchet wheel.
The invention consists primarily in a numbering head embodying therein a. shaft, a plurality of digit wheels, rotatably mounted upon said shaft, a ratchet wheel rotatable with each of said digit wheels, a holding pawl cooperating with each of said ratchet wheels, a plurality of means normally 0perative to prevent movement of said pawls respectively, means movable with each digit wheel of lower denomination and operative upon said means acting upon the pawl of the ratchet wheel of the digit wheel of next higher denomination whereby said means is made inoperative during the transfer operation from said wheel of lower denomination to said wheel of higher denomination and actuating means for said digit wheels;
and in' such other novel features of construction and combination of parts as are hereinafter set forth and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the embodiment of my invention shown inthe drawings, a indicates the frame of the machine having mounted therein a shaft 2) upon which a sequence of digit wheels cc-o-c c c and c are rotatably mounted, each of these digit wheels having upon the periphery thereof, ten characters from 0 to 9. Each of said digit wheels carries a ratchet wheel (ZcZd d-(Z* (Z -(Z rotatable therewith, by means of which the wheels are held in proper alinement and such of the wheels as are mechanically actuated are turned. In numbering heads of this character it is a common practice to have only the wheels of lower denomination actuated by power, as after 100,000 or more sheets have been numbered, wheels of denominations of 100,000 or more may be conveniently turned by hand without materially interfering with the capacity of the machine. The construction of the digit wheels themselves is that ordinarily employed in numbering heads of this character, my invention relating more particularly to the means for controlling the movement of said wheel as distinguished from the construction of the wheels themselves.
In the type of machine shown in the drawings, those digit wheels which are mechanically actuated are severally acted upon by a sequence of pawls cee -c 0 carried by a hub common to all such pawls said hub being rotatably mounted 'upon a shaft 6 carried by an oscillatory frame 6 Said hub c is acted upon by a spring 6 having a normal tendency to thrust all of said pawls toward the ratchet wheels with which said pawls are adapted to cooperate. Each of said ratchet wheels has a depression therein as 7' into which the pawl coooperating with said ratchet is adapted to drop upon the transfer operation to bring the pawl acting upon the ratchet of the wheel of next higher denomination into operative engagement therewith. The said swinging frame a is actuated in the usual manner by means of the plunger g. This manner of actuating the wheels is old and well known in this art and any other desired mechanism for actuating the digit wheels in arithmetical progression may be substitutedtherefor without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Acting upon the ratchet wheels d(l (Z rZ (Z-(Z d respectively are spring pressed pawls 7L l, -h h h h -h mounted upon a shaft i extending parallel with the shaft 6. These pawls act as a drag to prevent over-running of the digit wheels and at the same time serve to bring the wheels into alinement. In case of slight over-running of the wheel the said Wheel will be brought back to its proper alined position by the impact of the pawl with the ratchet tooth which it will engage upon the succeeding actuation of the said ratchet wheel. The use of such pawls and ratchet wheels is old and well-known in this art.
Heretofore locking means operative upon each digit wheel, have been used to prevent any, except a timely, turning of said wheels respectively. Such locking means, however, have necessitated a special construction of the digit wheel and the employment of independent locking means acting directly upon said wheels. By my present invention, I obviate the necessity for the use of such independent locking means acting upon the digit wheels, by the provision of means normally acting to hold each of the several pawls ]L']b ]2 h h k against displacement by the ratchet wheel with which they severally cooperate, and
thus prevent any but a timely turning of these digit wheels in either direction through the usual ratchet mechanism. In the form of the invention shown, I secure this result by providing each of the pawls h to 7L6 inclusive with a short arm or heel j- 7' j projecting below the shaft 2'.
Mounted upon the shaft Z are a series of stop levers k projecting between adjacent digit wheels respectively and provided with a laterally extending abutment 7c normally projected within the path of the arm or heel of the locking pawl operative in connection with the digit wheel of next higher denomination. Each of these stop levers is the same as every other and it is therefore unnecessary to refer to the several levers separately. These levers 7c are each loosely mounted upon the shaft Z and are severally acted upon by a spring 71: having a normal tendency to position said levers so that they will be operative to prevent movement of that pawl, the movement of which is controlled thereby.
The abutment k and that portion of the lever adjacent thereto is preferably reduced in height as compared with the remaining portions of said lever to afford clearance above said abutment, and said lever is stepped or off-set at K as shown to afford that clearance necessary for the oscillations of the holding pawl when the lever controlling same is depressed.
In connection with each digit wheel, I employ means movable therewith which means are adapted to act upon the lever is operative' upon the pawl of the wheel of next higher denomination, in a manner to release said pawl during that interval when a movement of the.wheel of next higher denomination is necessary to secure the desired carrying or transfer operation. This means will vary according to the construction of the head with which the invention is used. In the form of numbering head shown in the accompanying drawings, this means comprises a single cam tooth rotatable with the digit wheel and adapted to operatively engage and depress the locking lever for the pawl of the wheel of next higher denomination when the digit 9 is in the printing position upon the wheel of lower denomination. In the form of numbering head shown in the accompanying drawings, it is desirable by reason of the form of actuating mechanism used to construct the units digit wheel and its appurtenances and the tens digit wheel and its appurtenances differently from each other and from the remaining wheels. This difierence of construction is due to the fact that the tooth c is of a height not to afiord sufficient clearance to permit the use of a high tooth upon the ratchet wheel d and because it is desirable for structural reasons to provide the units .digit wheel 0 with a separate cam disk for actuating the lever is operative upon the tens wheel.
The actuating means for the lever 70 acting upon the heel j is a disk m carried by and rotatable with the units digit wheel 0 and its ratchet d. This disk m has thereon a single tooth m of a height sufliciently greater than that of the teeth of the ratchet wheel d to throw the abutment 7c of the lever 70 out of engagement with the pawl h when the digit 9 of the units wheel is in the printing position.
The tens digit wheel has its ratchet wheel cZ upon the side thereof toward the units wheel and upon the opposite side thereof, or between it and the hundreds wheel, it carries a disk n having thereon a single tooth 1/ adapted to engage and depress the locking lever is operative upon the pawl h Each of the remaining ratchet wheels d to d have thereon a single high tooth 0 adapted respectively to engage the locking lever is operative upon the pawl of the wheel of next higher denomination to release said pawl when the digit 9 of the wheel of lower denomination is -in the printing position.
In setting a numbering head having locking means for each of the digit wheels, it is desirable that the locking means for any wheel may be released to permit the manual turning of that wheel and also that the looking means for all of the wheels may be simultaneously released so as to permit the turning of any wheel. By thrusting a knifeblade between any two locking pawls h to h the abutment is of the lever 7.: may be pressed downwardly to release any one wheel.
To permit all of the wheels to be simultaneously released, I form in the shaft Z a circumferentially extending slot p in which is movably mounted a projection is upon each of the levers 70. When the said levers are in their normal position so as to prevent movement of their respective pawls said projections lc will bear against one end of the slot 72 in the shaft Z. Hence, the length of said slot will permit that movement of any of said levers upon said shaft necessary to release its pawl. The shaft Z is rotatably mounted in the frame a and one end thereof is provided with an operating handle 9 so that when it is desired to simultaneously release all of the pawls h to it, all of the levers 76 may be forced downwardly out of the operative relation to their respective pawls by a partial rotation of said shaft Z.
The various levers k project between the digit wheels into operative range of the high cam teeth mn and 0 operative thereon, their upward movement preferably being defined by the projection Z0 engaging the end of the slot 29. These levers 7c are so assembled in the machili e as to occupy a space ordinarily existing in numbering heads of this type, thus not requiring any increase either in the height or width of the numbering head.
The operation of the herein described numbering head is substantially as follows, assuming that the head is set to begin a run with the number 1:VVith each actuation of the plunger 9, the frame 6 will be oscillated and the pawl 6 will upon the return movement thereof engage a tooth of the ratchet cl and turn the digit wheel 0 onetenth of a revolution. As the digit 9 is being brought to the printin position, the high cam tooth 01/ upon the isk n will engage and depress the lever 70 adjacent the units wheel and force the abutment 74: thereof downwardly so as to bring it below the arm or heel j of the pawl it operative upon the tens wheel. Before the digit 9 comes to the printing position all of the levers 7: will be elevated so that t eir respective projections is will be in the paths of the respective arms or heels 7" to j and thus hold all of the wheels of a denomination above the units wheel against movement. Upon the next actuation of the frame e when the pawl 12. is free to move, the pawl 6 will drop into the recess 7 of the units digit wheel and bring the pawl 6 into operative engagement with the ratchet (1 so that upon the return movement of said frame, the units wheel 0 and the tenswheel 0 will turn simultaneously, the remaining digit wheels being locked in position by their respective holding pawls. This locking of the digit wheels results from the several pawls it to it" being held against oscillatory movement and in operative engagement with their respective ratchet wheels. lVhen the digit 9 upon both the units and the tens digit wheels are in the printing position, the high cam teeth m and n will simultaneously depress the levers is upon which they are operative so that upon the next actuation of the frame 6 the pawls e 6 will drop into the openings 7" of the units and the tens wheel and bring the pawl into operative engagement with the ratchet (Z of the hundreds wheel 0 thus simultaneously moving the units, tens and hundreds wheels. lVhen the digits 9 of the units, tens and hundreds wheels are in the print ing position, the wheel tooth 0 upon the ratchet wheel (Z will depress the lever A be tween the hundreds and the thousands wheel simultaneously with the depression of the levers 7toperative in connection with the wheels of lower denomination and upon the next actuation of the frame 6 the units, tens, hundreds and thousands wheel will all be turned while the wheels of higher denomination remain locked. This operation is repeated in connection with each digit wheel of higher denomination with the arithmetical progression of the machine, it being impossible to turn any digit wheel unless all of the wheels of lower denomination have the digit 9in the printing position. IVhile the bringing of the digit 9 of any digit wheel in the printing position will release the locking means for the wheel of next higher denomination, unless all of the wheels of lower denomination than that released have the digit 9 in the printing position, said released wheel cannot be turned. This results because there will be disposed between the released wheel of higher denomination and the units wheel, or between it and those wheels which are turned during the actuation of the machine, a digit wheel which is locked against movement. For example, if in the progression of the machine the number for which the machine is set is 9139 the ratchets (Z' and (i will both locking mechanism of the thousands wheel is inoperative to prevent accidental movement thereof, such movement can be imparted thereto only through the adhesion of the hundreds wheel thereto and this hundreds wheel is locked against movement. As a result of this condition so long as any wheel between a released wheel and the units wheel is locked, there can be no acci dental skipping of the machine.
If it be desired to set a single digit wheel, the lever is, operative upon the pawl thereof, may be depressed so as to permit the free turning of the wheel, If it be desired to re-set the entire head, the handle 9 is swung to turn the shaft Z and simultaneously depress all of the levers 7:2, thus permitting any wheel to turn.
By utilizing the holding pawls as a portion of the means for locking the several digit wheels, the function of these pawls as holding pawls is not interfered with; and even when the shaft Z is turned to permit the setting of the head, these pawls will still act as a drag to control the movement of the respective digit wheels and facilitate the accurate hand turning thereof.
I believe it to be broadly new to provide a numbering head including therein means whereby movement of the holding pawls acting upon the ratchet wheel, is prevented in a manner to lock the said ratchet wheel, and the digit wheel under the control of said ratchet wheel, against movement in either direction, and I intend to claim such broadly.
It is not my intention to limit the invention to application to the specific type of numbering head shown in the accompanying drawings, as it is apparent the invention is applicable to any type of head wherein each digit wheel has associated therewith a ratchet wheel having simultaneous rotary movement therewith.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to have protected by Letters Patent is 1. A numbering head embodying therein a shaft, a plurality of digit wheels rotatably mounted upon said shaft, a ratchet wheel rotatable with each of said digit wheels, a holding pawl cooperating with each of said ratchet wheels, a plurality of means normally operative to prevent movement of said pawls respectively, means movable with each digit wheel of lower denomination and operative upon said means acting upon the pawl of the ratchet wheel of the digit wheel of next higher denomination whereby said means is made inoperative during the transfer operation from said wheel of lower denomination to said wheel of higher denomination, and actuating means for said digit wheels.
2. A numbering head embodying therein a shaft, a plurality of digit wheels rotatably mounted upon said shaft, a ratchet wheel rotatable with each of said digit wheels, a 1 holding pawl cooperating with each of said ratchet wheels, a plurality of means normally operative to prevent movement of said pawls respectively, means movable with each digit wheel of lower denomination and operative upon said means acting upon the pawl of the ratchet wheel of the digit wheel of next higher denomination whereby said means is made inoperative during the transfer operation from said wheel of lower de- 2' nomination to said wheel of higher denomination, a transfer mechanism actuating directly upon the several digit wheels and a main actuating mechanism therefor.
3. A numbering head embodying therein a shaft, a plurality of digit wheels rotatably mounted upon said shaft, a ratchet wheel rotatable with each of said digit wheels, a holding pawl cooperating with each of said ratchet wheels having an arm or heel thereon, means normally positioned inthe path ofthe arm or heel upon each of said pawls whereby movement of said pawls respectively is prevented, means movable with each digit wheel of lower denomination and op- 5 erative upon said means acting upon the pawl of the ratchet wheel of the digit wheel of next higher denomination whereby said means is made inoperative during the transfer operation from said wheel of lower de- 4. nomination to said wheel of higher denomination, and actuating means for said digit wheels.
4. A numbering head embodying therein a shaft, a plurality of digit wheels rotatably mounted upon said shaft, a ratchet wheel rotatable with each of said digit wheels, a holding pawl cooperating with each of said ratchet wheels, each of said pawls having an arm or heel thereon, a plurality of levers 5. mounted adjacent each ratchet wheel respectively and having a laterally extending abutment engaging the arm or heel of the pawl cooperating with the adjacent ratchet wheel whereby movement of said pawl is normally prevented, means movable with each digit wheel of lower denomination and operative upon said means acting upon the pawl of the ratchet wheel of the digit wheel of next higher denomination whereby said means is made inoperative during the transfer operation from said wheel of lower denomination to said wheel of higher denomination, and actuating means for said digit wheels.
5. A numbering head embodying therein a I shaft, a plurality of digit wheels rotatably mounted upon said shaft, a ratchet wheel rotatable with each of said digit wheels, a holding pawl cooperating with each of said ratchet wheels, each of said pawls having an arm or heel thereon, a plurality of levers mounted adjacent each ratchet wheel respectively and having a laterally extending abutment engaging the arm or heel of the pawl cooperating with the adjacent ratchet wheel whereby movement of said pawl is normally prevented, each of said levers having a stepped or offset portion at one side of said abutment whereby clearance is afforded for the movement of the pawl operative upon the ratchet wheel adjacent said lever, means 30 movable with each digit wheel of lower denomination and operative upon said means acting upon the pawl of the ratchet wheel of the digit wheel of next higher denomination whereby said means is made inoperative during the transfer operation from said wheel of lower denomination to said Wheel of higher denomination, and actuating means for said digit wheels. j
6. A numbering head embodying therein a shaft, a plurality of digit wheels rotatably mounted upon said shaft, a ratchet wheel carried by and rotatable with each of said digit wheels, a holding pawl cooperating with each of said ratchet wheels, a plurality of levers positioned between adjacent ratchet wheels and normally operative to prevent movement of said pawls respectively, a cam carried by and rotatable with each said digit wheel and adapted to actu- Loo ate said levers respectively when the character 9 of the digit wheel is in the printing position whereby a lever of a wheel of one denomination is made inoperative during the transfer operation from said wheel to the wheel of the next denomination, and actuating means for said digit wheels.
7. A numbering head embodying therein a shaft, a plurality of digit wheels rotatably mounted upon said shaft, a ratchet wheel carried by and rotatable with each of said digit wheels. a holding pawl cooperating with each of said ratchet wheels, each of said pawls having an arm or heel thereon, a plurality of levers arranged between ad acent digit wheels, and normally adapted to engage said arm or heel of said pawls to prevent movement of said pawls respectively, a cam carried by and rotatable with each digit wheel and adapted to actuate said levers respectively when the character 9 of the digit wheel is in the printing position whereby a lever of a wheel of one denomination is made inoperative during the transfer operation from said wheel to the wheel of the next denomination, and actuating means for said digit wheels.
8. A numbering head embodying therein a shaft, a plurality of difi't wheels rotatably mounted upon said sha a ratchet wheel 130 and a cam having a single riser thereon carried by and rotatable with the units digit wheel, a ratchet wheel upon one side of the tens digit and a cam having a single riser on the other side thereof between it and the hundreds wheel, a ratchet wheel upon all wheels of a denomination above the tens wheel having a high tooth or riser, a holding pawl cooperating with each of said ratchet wheels, said pawls each having an arm or heel thereon, a lever mounted adjacent said riser upon the units wheel, the tens wheel and each ratchet wheel of each of the digit wheels of denominations higher than the tens, said levers being normally adapted to engage said arms or heels and prevent movement of said pawls, said risers respectively being adapted to make said levers inoperative with relation-to their respective pawls when transferring from a wheel of one denomination to a wheel of next denomination and actuating means for said digit wheels.
9. A numbering head embodying therein a digit wheel having a ratchet wheel upon one side thereof one of the teeth of said ratchet wheel being higher than the others in combination with a holding pawl acting upon said ratchet wheel and controlling means for said holding pawl adapted to be acted upon by said high tooth.
10. A numbering head embodying therein a pivotal pawl having a head adapted to engage a. ratchet wheel and an arm or heel projecting from point of pivotal support in a direction away from said head in combination with means cooperating with said arm or heel to prevent oscillatory movement of said pawl, and a ratchet wheel provided with means adapted to impart a timely actuation to said last named means.
11. A'numbering head embodying therein a shaft, a plurality of digit wheels rotatably mounted on said shaft, a ratchet wheel rotatable with each of said digit wheels, a holding pawl coiiperating with each of said ratchet wheels, said pawls each having an arm or heel thereon, a shaft parallel with said first named shaft, a plurality of levers loosely mounted thereon adjacent each ratchet wheel, said levers each having a laterally extending abutment adapted to engage the arm or heel of the pawl operative upon the adjacent ratchet wheel whereby movement of said pawl is normally prevented, means movable with each'digit wheel whereby the lever acting upon the pawl of the adjoining digit wheel is made inoperative during the transfer operation, and actuating means for said digit wheels.
12. A numbering head embodying therein a shaft, a plurality of digit wheelsrotatably mounted on said shaft, a ratchet wheel rotatable with each of said digit wheels, a holding pawl cooperating with each of said ratchet wheels, said pawls each having an arm .or heel thereon, a shaft parallel with said first named shaft, a plurality of levers loosely mounted thereon adjacent each ratchet wheel, said levers each having a laterally extending abutment adapted to engage the arm or heel of the pawl operative upon the adjacent ratchet wheel whereby movement of said pawl is normally prevented, means movable with each digit wheel whereby the lever acting upon the pawl of the ad joining digit wheel is made inoperative during the transfer operation, means whereby all of said levers may be simultaneously actuated to release all of said pawls and actuating means for said digit wheels.
13. A numbering head embodying therein a shaft, a plurality of digit wheels rotatably mounted on said shaft, a ratchet wheel rotatable with each of said digit wheels, a holding pawl cooperating with each of said ratchet wheels, said pawls each having an arm or heel thereon, a movable shaft parallel with said first named shaft, a plurality of levers loosely mounted thereon, adjacent each ratchet wheel, said levers each having a laterally extending abutment adapted to engage the arm or heel of the pawl operative upon the adjacent ratchet wheel whereby movement of said pawl is normally prevented, means movable with each digit wheel whereby the lever acting upon the pawl of the adjoining digit wheel is. made inoperative during the transfer operation,
cooperating means carried by said levers respectively and said shaft, whereby said levers may be actuated by said shaft to simultaneously release all of said pawls, means whereby said shaft may be turned and actuating means for said digit wheels.
14. A numbering head embodying therein a main frame, a shaft carried thereby, a plurality of digit wheels, rotatably mounted on said shaft, a ratchet wheel carried by and rotatable with each of said digit wheels, an oscillatory frame, means carried by said frame cooperating with said ratchet wheels respectively whereby said digit wheels are progressively turned, a holding pawl acting upon each'of said ratchet wheels, each of said paivls having an arm or heel thereon, a cam plate carried by the units digit wheel adjacent its ratchet wheel, a cam plate carried by the tens digit wheel upon the opposite side thereof to the said units digit wheel ratchet wheeh eachof said cam plates having a single riser and each of the ratchet wheels of the digit wheels of a denomination above the tens. wheel having a single high tooth, a movable shaft carried by said frame parallel with said first named shaft, plurality of levers loosely mounted thereonadjacent said cam plate. of the units andtens digit wheeland theratchet wheel ofdigit.
