In the practice of my invention, I provide so an oblong case a, the top a of which is hinged at the front end of the case as shown at a and the front end portion of the top a is substantially of the same vertical depth as the bottom front end portion of said case, as clearly indicated in- Fig.,2, while the depth of the top a of the case through the central and rear end portion thereof is much less than the depth of the corresponding partof the bottom portion of the case.
In my improvement part of the elements of the machine are mounted in the movable I top-a of. the case, and the rest in the bottom part of said case, and the principal parts of the adding and recording mechanism are mounted in the movable top. (L This facilitates. the assembling of the parts of the machine and the care thereof; and I will first describe the parts of the machine that are mounted in the movable top c The top part 0. of the case is provided with alongitudinal opening a which extends approximately the full length thereof except at the front end thereof, and the central andfront end portion of said opening is covered r05 by a spring metal plate a, the front end of a, and the rear end of which is: provided with baokwardly directed spring tongues a the rear ends of which areprovidedwith hook members a which open 1-10 downwardly, and said spring plate a is pro vided midway of its length with transversely arranged sight apertures a". 5
Between the rear end portion of the spring metal plate a, or the hook members a and the rear end p irtion of the top part a of the case, is'an open space I), as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the same constituting the rear end ortion of the longitudinal opening a, and beneath which is a counter-sunk shelf or support b as shown in Figs. 2 and 6, on which is mounted a plurality of longitudinal movable ratchet bars 6 which are nine in number, in the construction shown, and said bars are separated by longitudinal partitions 6 as shown in Fig. 6, and formed integrally with the counter-sunk shelf or support 5*.-
Therear end portions of the ratchet bars are provided in their upper faces with ratchet teeth 12 which are numbered from zero to nine from front to back as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and connected with the said bars forwardly of the counter-sunk'shelf or support'b and with the rear wall of the top a of the case, are springs b which normally hold said bars at the limit of their backwardmovement as shown in Fi 2, and in contact with bufier spring fingers 7 connected with a plate 5 secured to the rear end wall of the top a 'of the case as shown in Figs. 2 and 6.
.The rear end portions of the bars I) which contain the ratchet teeth 12 are rectangular in cross section, but the front end portions of said bars are T-shaped in cross section as shown inFig. 4, and the bottom edges or faces thereof are provided with ratchet teeth I) which are ten in number. Mounted transversely of the top a of the case and immediately under the rear end portions of the ratchetbars b when in their normal position as shown in Fig.2 is a shaft 0 which I will call the item shaft, and said shaft is qarried by inwardly directed bosses c as shown in Fig. 5
through which are passed screws 0 the inner ends of which form supports for the shaft c.-

The front-end portions of the ratchet bars I) pass between the wheels 0 as shown in Fig. 5, and pivoted to each of said bars centrally thereof as shown at c in Fig. 2 is a rack bar 0 and these rack bars 0 which are shown in gears c of the wheels 0 i Mounted in the top a of the case in front of i the shaft cand parallel therewith is another disks f total adder wheels g which are also cut out directed boss (1 and at the opposite end by a removable tubular bearing d provided at its outer end with a head d which is countersunk in and secured in the right side of the top a of the case, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The shaft (1 is provided within the bearing d with a tubular bushing 61*, and the outer end thereof is provided with a knob or handle 6 which is shown in section in Fig. 8, and in full lines-in Fig. 4. Rigidly secured to the shaft (1 and corresponding in position with the rack bars 6 are cam disksf part of which are shown in Fig. 4, and one of which is shown in Fig. 10, and one of which is shown in detail in Figs. 23 and 24, andthese cam disks are provided at one side with ashoulder f 2 adjacent to which-is a concavity or depressionf and between the cam disksf on the shaft (1 are placed sleeves f Mounted between each of the cam disksf and on the sleeves f are ratchet wheels f provided with hubs f having in the ends thereof annular recesses f and the said hubs are'also provided with grooves f One of the ratchet wheels f 5 is clearlyshown in Figs. 19 and 20,. and a part of said wheels are shown in Fig. 4 in section, and one of said wheels is also shown in Fig. 10.

art of which are shown in full lines, and part in section in Fig. 4, and one of which is shown in detail in Figs. 16 to 18 inclusive, and one of which is also shown in Fig.2, and these wheels are provided with numerals from zero to nine inclusive, and said wheels are cut out annularly on one side thereof as shown at g to receive the ratchet. wheels f as clearly shown in Fig. 4, and said wheels are provided with ribs or feathers which enter the grooves f 8 in the .hubs f of the ratchet wheels' f There are also mounted between the cam and adjacent to the wheels 9 sight annularly of one side thereof as shown at g in Figs. 4, 14 and 15, and these wheels are shown partly in full. lines and partlyin section in Fig. 4, and one of them is shown in detail in Figs. 13 to. 15 inclusive, and one is also indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 10,
In the annular out out portion g of the wheels 9 are pivoted pawls g having short arms g and longer arms g and the short arms 9 are provided with laterally directed fingers h which bear on the faces of the cam disks f, and in thegrooves or annular recesses f 7 of the hubs f and hold the fingers k in contact with the face of the cam disks f. The wheels 9 are ratchet wheels and are provided with ten teeth which correspond with the ratchet teeth I) in the bottom'faces of the front end portions of the ratchet bars 5 and 1 the teeth on the wheels 9 are numbered from zero to nine as clearly indicated in Fig. 14,
and these numbers, in practice, are read through the apertures or openings a in the spring top plate a of the top a? of the case.
In Fig. 14 the numbers from zero-to nine are placed around the wheel in order to indicate the normal position of said wheels when the parts of the total adder mechanism are set ready to begin operation; and in Fig. 17 the numbers are'shown around the wheel for a similar purpose, and it will be seenfrom these two figures that the numbers on these two wheels are, in practice, arranged just opposite, the zero mark being at the bottom of the wheel 9, and at the top of the wheel 9.
Mounted forwardly of the shaft d and parallel therewith is a rod k on which are mounted a lurality of dogs h", which equal in number t e total adder wheels 9, and forwardly ofjthe shaft h is a transverse sup rt k having backwardly directed spring gers h as shown in Fig. 2. The dogs h are provided with rearwardly directed noses which operate in connection with the wheels 9 and with forwardly directed noses on which the spring fingers h bear, and the dogs h prevent the reverse movement of the wheels g, g and f Mounted in the front end portion of the case and removable when the top a is open, is a paper roll h on which is wound a sheet or strip h of paper, and this, sheet or strip is carried upwardly and passed around a guide roller '5 as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and said sheet or strip is then carried backward-1y and passed between rollers i and i The roller i is mounted in the top a of the case, while the roller i is mounted in the bottom portion of the case, and in the form of construction shown, the roller 11 is a flexible roller, and the roller 1? is provided with .a corrugated surface as shown in Figs. 3 and 7, and these rollers serve as feed rollers as hereinafter described, and from these rollers the sheet or strip M of paper passes backwardly and is passed out through a suitable aperture 11 between the top (1 and bottom part of the case and may be torn oil by means of a cutter i Secured to the inner side of the opposite sides of the'top a of the case as clearly shown in Fig. 2 are plates which depend into the bottom part of the case when the top a is closed, and these plates at each side carry two spools j said spools being arranged in pairs transversely of the case. Secured in the plates are hollow bosses j on which the spools are mounted and rotate, and passed throng the sides of the bottom of the case are screws j having heads by which they may be manipulated, and these screws hold the spools j on the bosses j Secured centrally of plates 3' are inwardly directed posts 1' on which are mounted y-okeshaped members 7' having forwardly. and backwardly directed spring arm's j, and these spring arms 9' normally bear on the inner face of the corresponding spools'j and normally prevent said spools from racing, and mounted on the posts 7 are spiral springs which force the yoke-shaped members j outwardly.
In order to take the s ools 7' out, the screws 7' are taken out .an( the top a of the case is opened and the yoke-shaped devices j may be drawn inwardly as shown in dotted lines in Fig. .9, and the spools detached from the bosses 7' -As hereinbefore stated the spools j are arranged inpairs transversely of the case, and in practice,- each pair of s ools is provided with an ordinary carbon r15 :bon k similar to the ribbons employed in typewritin machines, and these ribbons are prefer-ab y of diflerent colors, and in practice these ribbons are also passed transversely of and over the sheet or strip h of paper as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, and in order to move these ribbons.transversely of connected a pair of arms 76 which range fo-rwardly and are curved u )wardly at their front ends and with whic is connected a transversely ranging impression hammer which is adapted to operate on and beneath the sheet or strip h of paper at the point where the ribbon k of the rear pair of spools j passes thereover, and this )oint is directly under the item shalit c and the wheels a mounted thereon as clearlyshown in Fig. 2. .M-ounted transversely of the bottom portion of the case and in the right hand side thereof, in the form of construction shown, and approximate] under the shaft (1 is a rotary stub shaft 6 with which is connected an "arm 7c which extends downwardly and rearward ly and is also connected at k with 'a yoke-sha ed link member k which is conone or both of the arms is is a contractile spring m which is also secured to the bot- .tom of the case, and by means of which the arms 7c are drawn downwardly after each operatlon of the key m as hereinafter described.

The total adder shaft cl asses through the bearing d as hereinbefore described, and into the knob or handle a as shown in Fig. 8, and said knob or handle is provided with a charm her 1' through which is passed a screw 1' which is screwed into the shaft d, and placed in the chamber or recess 7' is a spring 1' which bears on the head of the screw 1" and against the inner end wall of the chamber 1.
The end of the shaft d which passe through the bearing (1 and into the knob or handle 0 is also provided in its opposite sides with longitudinal grooves 1" which receive corresponding ribs or feathers r on the knob or handle e. The outer face or head of the bearing d is provided, as shown in Fig. 12, with a segmental cam lug 1 adjacent to which and spaced therefrom is a lug or projection r and the knob or handle 6 is provided with a circular head 8, as clearly shown in Figs. 4-and 11, on the face of which is a pin s which operates on the cam lug r and between said cam lug and the lug or projection T in the operation of the machine as hereinafter described.

The item wheels 0 are provided at regular intervals with radial projections 11, on which the numerals are placed, and these radial projections are equally spaced except at one side where there-is a blank s ace u formed by leaving out oneof the ra ial projections 111?, and this blank space a is between the zero and the numeral nine, and in assembling the parts of the machine for use the item wheels 0 are placed on the shaft 0, with the blank spaceyzt down, and in this operation the recording total adderwheels g are placed on the shaft (1 in such manner that the zero marks thereon will be down, while the sight total adder wheels 9 are so laced on said shaft that the Zero marks will up. The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
The operator stands or sits at the front of the machine with the total and item keys at his right. The item recording wheels mounted on the time shaft are placed on said shaft so that the blank spaces a are all down and perfectly alined, and the total adder recording wheels are placed on the total adder shaft so that all of the zeros are down and in perfect alinement, While the sight total adder wheels are placed on said last named shaft so be desired to record that the zeros are all up and perfectly alined.

I
During the upward'movement of the impression hammer k the arm r carried on the shaftlc operates the feed roller 03 through the link 7) and feeds the strip of paper rear- Thetotal adder wheels remain in the position hereinbefore described, by reason of the dogs h and springs h holding them, and the teeth I) of the ratchet bars I) ride over the teeth of the sight total adder wheels when the bars are drawn rearwardly by the springs b.
When' the yoke member m has been raised sufficiently to release the hooks from the ratchet bars, the trip lugs m operate against the cam faces'n of the trip arms n to throw the shoulders m out of engagement with the noses W and this allows the spring tongues a to force the yoke member at downwardly to return the rock arms m and trip arms n to their normal positions.
It will be understood that at each opera- 4, and draw ment at each rotation of the element or unit ried by the item recording wheels is referably blue, while the ribbon ranging un er the numerals of the total adder recording wheels is preferably red so that a total can easily be distinguished from an item.
In the total adding mechanism the operation, exec t the setting is automatic. The
four mem. ers between each cam disk on the total adder shaft viz :-the sight total adder wheel, the recording total adder wheel,'the ratchet f and the pawl g are so assembled that they form a single element or unit of the total adding mechanism, and the pin h carried by the awl g of one element or unit range to the eft, and rides on the cam diskf and overlies the teeth-of the ratchet f 5 comprising a part of the next element or unit to the left, and by reason of this construction the pin it of the pawl g operates to give the element or unit next to the left a step moveat its right. This is accomplished by the pin 7L when it rides down into the depressionf of the cam disk and engages with a tooth of the ratchet)" of the next element or unit to the left, as clearly shown in Fig. 10. During the operation of the total ad ding mechanism the pin 8 of the knob or handle 6, lies in the recess formed by the cam lug r and lug 1* thus locking the shaft (2 against rotation. When it is desired to reset the total adder mechanism, the knob or handle e is pulled out against the action of the spring 1*, until the pin 8 clears the lugs r and 1- the knob or andle e is then turned to the left until the pin comes in contact with thelug r this operation turns the cams so that the shoulders f 2 contact with the pins h of the pawls g, thus carrying all of the elements or units ack to their normal or starting osition.
When this operation is com leted t e knob or handle is then turned to t e left until the in s rides up on the cam lug r and is pulled into the recess between said cam lug and the lug T when the shaft is locked andthe parts ready for operation.
In Fig. 27 I have shown amodified form of item recording mechanism in which I employ wheels having abbreviations of the names of the months of the year, wheels having 'numerals desi ed to record the days of the months, an. wheels having letters which enable me to record the name of a firm or cor poration in addition to nine wheels having numbers to record the amount of an item or' transaction. This construction will be applicable to adding and recording machines, where more detail is required. I employ in this construction a shaft '0 on which is mounted from left to right a month wheel o day wheels v lettered wheels '0 and numbered wheels 11 all of said wheels carry gear wheels o and are adapted to rotate inde endently on said shaft.

1. In an adding and recording machine, a casing provided with a movable top, said top part being provided with an opening, recording wheels mounted in the top part, sliding devices adapted toflbe operated through the opening in the top part of the casing and to operate said wheels, means for feeding a strip of paper through the casing beneath the re cording wheels, devices mounted inthe bot-- tom part of the casing and co-actingwith said wheels for making an impression on said paper, and means for operating said devices.
2. In an adding and recording machine, a casing provided ,with a movable top having an opening therein, two gangs of -wheels mounted in said top an (1. provided with printing faces, means for feeding a strip of paper through said casing below said wheels, devices mounted in the bottom part of the casing and co-acting with one gang of wheels to record items, other devices mounted in the bottom part of the casing and co-acting with the other gang of wheels to record totals,
means for operating said devices, and sliding devices mounted in the top part of the casing and adapted 'to be operated through the opening therein and to operate said wheels.
3. In an adding and. recording machine, a casing provided with a movable top having an o ening therein, two gangs of print-ing whee s mounted in said top, means for feeding a stripof paper through said machine beneath said wheels, devices mounted inthe bottom part of the casing and co-acting with one gang of wheels to record items, other devices mounted in the bottom part of the easing and co-acting with the Wheels of the other gang to record totals, and sliding devices mounted horizontally over said wheels in the top part of the casing and adapted to operate said wheels and to be operated through the opening in said top part of the casing.
4. In an adding and printing machine, a casing provided with a top having an opening therein, means for feeding a strip of paper through said casing and giving the same an intermittent movement, two gangs of printing wheels mounted in said casing, sliding de vices adapted to operate said wheels and to be operated through the o e'nin g in the top of vices in operative position, and means 00 ing-wheels mounted in said casin means comprising sliding devices mounted in said'casing wheels, means therein, means-for feeding a strip .ol'paper through said casing and giving the samean intermittent movement, two gangs of prints g, sliding devices adapted to operate said wheels and to be operated through the opening in the-top of the casing, means for holding said sliding devices in operative position, and means coacting with-said printing wheels-Tor making animpression on said paper, said last named impression hammers ranging across the casing and under said gangs of wheels.
6. In an adding and recording: machine, a casing, two gangs of wheels-mounted therein,
and: adapted to rotate said'wheels, one-gang of wheels being composed oflal-ternate readingand printing wheels, the other gang being-- composed of alternate printing and ratehet forifeeding a strip of paper through said casing and under said :wheels, and: means coacting-withsaid wheels for m akingimpressions on: said paper.
7. feeding a strip .of paper thereth-I-ongh, two gangs of printing wheels 'moun-teihtherein, reading: wheels being arranged alternately with printing wheels in one-ofsaid' gangs, sliding devices for operating said wheels, tworock-shaftsmounted transversely of said casing, hammersmounted on-said shaftsand adapted-to coact with said; wheels to make impressions on said paper, means for holding said sliding devices in an inoperative position, means 'arried by one of-said shafts to release said sliding devices, and means for returi'ii-ng said sliding devices to their normalor inoperative positions.

In an adding andrecording machine, a casing provided with a movable top having an opening therein, printing Wheels mounted in ith'e-top part'of the casing, sliding devices mounted in the top part of the casing and adapted .to be operated through the opening therein and-to operate said wheels, means for feeding a stri of paper through said casing below said w eels'and giving it an intermittent: movement, and hammer devices mounted in the bottom part of the casing and. co-aeting with said wheels to make impressions-on saidpaper.

In a printing and recording machine, a casing provided with a movable tophaving an opening therein and two gangs of wheels mounted in said movable top, one of said gangs of Wheels being composed of alternate gearand printing wheels, and the other gang of wheels being composed of alternate printing and ratchet wheels, the ratchet wheels being also. adapted to serve as reading wheels, and the top-of thecasing being transverse openings through w ich the readingwheels may be seen, the top of said casing dwith a top having an opening aid:casing, means 00- ted to be operated provided with I mittent movement, two gangs of. printing wheels, sliding devices adapted to operate said. wheels, means for holding said sliding devices in operative position, tension devices for returning said sliding devices to their nor mal position, devices co-acting with said wheels for making an impression on said paper, and means controlled by said devices for releasing the sliding devices and allowing them to be returned to their normal or inoperative position by said tension devices.
- 16. In an adding and recording machine, a
casing, two gangs of printing wheels mounted in the top part of the casing, means for feeding a strip of paper through said casing below said wheels, means for supporting strips of carbon paper in the casing and feeding the same transversely thereof beneath said gangs of wheels and beneath said paper, means for operating said wheels, devices mounted in the bottom part of the machine and co-acting with one gang of wheels to record items, other devices mounted in the bottom part of the machine and co-acting with the other gang of wheels to record totals, and sliding devices mounted in the top part of the machine and operated through an opening formed. therein and adapted to operate said wheels.

In an adding and recording machine, a casing provided with a movable top in which are mounted two transverse gangs of printing wheels, said top being rovided at the opposite sides thereof with p ates which depen into the bottom part of the casing when the top is closed, spools supported by saidplates, said spools being adapted to support strips of carbon tape, means for feeding said strips of tape transversely of the case,
and beneath said gangs of wheels, means for feeding a strip of aper beneath said angs of wheels, devices or operating said w eels, and hammer devices mounted in the bottom of the casing and co-acting with said wheels to form impressions on said strip of paper,-
said spools being also removable from t eir supports and provided with tensional brake devices which also operate to hold them in position. 1

In an adding and recording machine, a case provided with a movable top having an opening therein, meansfor feeding a strip of paper through said case, two gangs of eaavss printing Wheels mounted in said case, means C0-acting with the wheels of one gang to record items, moans t-o-acting with the wheels of the other gang to record totals, and sliding devices horizontally movable over said wheels and adapted to rotate the same, said sliding devices being provided with ratchet teeth having numerals thereon adapted to be read through the opening in the to of the case.
19. n an adding and recording machine, a case provided with a movable top having an opening therein, means for feeding a strip of paper through said case, two gangs of printing wheels mounted in said case,
means co-acting with the wheels of one gang to record items, means co-acting with the wheels of the other gang to record totals, and sliding devices horizontally movable over said wheels and adapted to rotate the same, said sliding devices being provided with ratchet teeth having numerals thereon adapted to be read through the opening in the top of the case, and said sliding devices beingadapted to be operated in one direction through the opening in the top of the case and being provided with tensional devices for moving them in the opposite direction, and spring devices connected with. the top of the case and operating in connection with the said ratchet teeth for holding said sliding devices against the operation of said spring devices.

In an adding and recording machine, a casing, means for feeding'a strip of paper therethrough, two gangs of printing wheeis provided with printing faces, means co-acting with the printing Wheels of one gang to record items, means co-acting with the printing wheels of the other gang to record totals, and sliding devices adapted to rotate said wheels, said sliding devices being provided with ratchet teeth on which are placed numerals,'springs for moving said slidlng devices in one direction, and spring catches op erating in connection with said ratchet teeth to hold said sliding devices against the operation of said springs.
21. In a machine of the class described, two gangs of wheels, sliding bars provided with ratchet teeth adapted to operate the wheels of one gang in one direction, and rack bars pivoted. to the sliding bars and adapted to operate the wheels of the other gang in both directions.

In a machine of the class described, two gangs of wheels, sliding bars provided with ratchet teeth adapted to operate the wheels of one gang in one direction, and rack bars pivoted to the sliding barsand adapted to operate the wheels of-the other gang in both directions, said sliding bars being also rovided with another set of ratchet teeth avin numerals thereon.
